One thing I cannot understand is why it is that the design on samus remains as the SNES version, with the varia suit... this urks me because it lets me know that sakurai and his team are not looking at the superior design of the Prime series.... that means no dark samus, no meta ridley, and no alternate costumes such as the light and dark suit

Samus' new look is actually modeled after Zero Mission and the Prime series. So you're wrong there. Another thing, why in the hell would you want Meta Ridley and Dark Suit Samus over the normal Ridley and Varia or Gravity Suit Samus?

... Samus in Brawl us a combination of her old look and her new look, just like most other characters. If you look at her artwork, many parts of her character design are influenced by the Metroid Prime design, especially the shinier suit.

Uh... I wasn't aware that Prime, etc. weren't released in Japan. Are you sure of that?

Also, although I'm not going to say that Brawl's Samus is "stripped down" (no zero-suit pun intended), she simply doesn't have the weaponry and technology that would go along with the spiffier suits. Varia just makes more sense. But hey, who knows- maybe the alternate color schemes will actually be alternate costumes in this one.... we can only hope.

It's not that much of a change from the Zero Mission series, or the GBA games. It just doesn't incorporate much from the Prime part of the series.

And don't use the j-word. That's a derogatory term from World War II propaganda.

QFT. I was actually just about to comment not on the Samus issue, but on the racial slur / derogatory term used in the title.

Stryks will just say that it's modeled after the Zero Mission suit, which is modeled after the Prime suit. Then he'll go on about the lights on the shoulders... Anyway, I agree with him, It matches the Zero Mission Suit perfectly, and the Zero Mission suit is a combination of the Prime and Super Metroid suits.

and the japenese hate it when you call them "****":ohwell:

hmm ,amerys?
It's the same as calling a Jewish person a Jew or an Pakistani a Paki. Contracting a word isn't always derogatory, but in the case of a word like ***, it is. And yes, Japanese people don't like being called ****. I have a few Japanese friends and they find the word offensive.

Just because a word doesn't sound offensive, it does not mean that it isn't. Basically it just comes down to ignorance of racist terminology.

lemme start off:
it was meant in no way offensive to any nihhonjin
I say americanized because of the US based retro Studios...

but this:

does NOT equal this:

or,

the differences are subtle but evident, serving for sharper edges and a more 'futuristic' design in genereal, the way it realistically should be, kinda how link looks grittier and more detailed in favor of the more comic art style he presented in melee... samus looks like a cartoon again, point blank, which gives me reason that:

the dark suit:

Dark samus:

light suit:

and possibly even RIDLEY wont be part of the game in any way shape or form.... what I wanted to ask is, is it because sakurai and his teamjust dont like the 'american' version of samus? because I'd see no problem at all with samus appearing as a straight rip from her character in Metroid Prime 2 echoes...

That's because people have taken political correctness to near perverse extremes.

Yes, this thread has been derailed, quite a bit.

in case you didnt know...
they take more offense to "Oriental" than just about any other word...
most far East-Asians do actually...
it just pertains to where they stand geographically depicted from an old latin word... I didnt want to say asian because it doesnt really reflect the culture or the mind set of the people which would have not reflected the design choice.... but its easterner now any more disputes? can we discuss samus now?

I wasn't making this a racial debate, everyone else was. I was pointing out that...who really gives a crap?? Besides, affirmative action is crap.

Anyway, let's not get off-topic, even though this is an incredibly dumb one. Only minor minor features are different between the Prime suit and the Brawl one. If we want to continue either of these conversations, though, they belong here...please post here.

How about just change the title to "The Japanese..."?

Metroid is comprised of more than just the Prime subseries, so I see no problem with using a different suit design. There's still nothing stopping them from bringing Prime elements into the game. Also, their view on the Prime games has no bearing on whether Ridley makes it in. He's been in the series since the beginning.

We don't in the UK.

I'd much rather be called Oriental thank a Chink, Gook, Nip etc. That being said, I don't really mind racism either, in context of friendly banter, not actual hate. But that's going off on a tangent, so we'll forget about all that.

Anyway, on topic. I couldn't care less what Samus looks like, as long as she looks like Samus. There have been so many aesthetic changes over the years, another one for brawl won't make a bit of difference to me.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is made by a Japanese company for Nintendo. Of course, they would go with Samus's JAPANESE design. However, I do not doubt that Metroid Prime elements will be in Smash Bros. It's what saved Metroid from obscurity. I'm positive that Metroid Prime, and the Hunters will appear at the very least as assist trophies. (Yeah, it's unlikely another Metroid character will appear if even the popular Ridley is supposibly going to be an assist trophy)

Well, grim, that makes no sense. If there are minor differences between Brawl and Prime Samus, and no differences between Zero Mission and Brawl Samus, wouldn't it be common sense to conclude that Brawl Samus is modeled after Zero Mission Samus? Especially if Zero Suit Samus (who was in Zero Mission) appears as a playable character also?

What does it have to do with Ridley? If they not going with Prime style then they just won't go with Prime Ridley. You do know that he was in Metriod BEFORE Prime right?

"Prime Ridley" is Meta-Ridley, and I definitely don't want him to be the main Ridley (which he won't).

Now this definitely belongs in the Ridley forum...

And we should really stop this posting. If you have a problem with Samus's suit, post it in the Samus thread. Otherwise, leave this one alone and come to the Ridley activists thread. :p

No, don't post this in the Samus thread! Post crappy arguments about her suit here, then post something that actually has to do with Samus in the Samus thread. Please, I need someone to talk to in that thread who doesn't ramble on about her suit :(

Visiting from above.
Well, this got asinine quickly. For the record, I'm so happy that Sakurai and company are going with the most current look of each character in the game, instead of doing their own thing. Sakurai doing his own thing is just foolish, no doubt fueled by geographical barriers...

...Oh right. Some newer designs in the Nintendo world suck, and Sakurai knows what he's doing.

For the record, calling the Prime version "superior" is a matter of opinion, not fact.
