Introduction
Dwareven Vow #7: Justice and Love will Always Win
1.) Who is Lloyd Irving?

Lloyd Irving is the main Protagonist of the Nintendo Gamecube game Tale of Symphonia. The fifth installment in Namco's popular RPG series Tales Of. A Swordmans hailing from the dying world of Sylvarant living in the outskirts of the village of Iselia raised by his Dwarf father Dirk. Every so offten Sylvarant's mana drains and all life wither aways in order to stop this, a chosen of regeneration under the guidance of the Goddess Martel goes a journey to four seals in order to restore the flow of mana. He and his close friends Genis Sage and new Chosen of Regeneration Colette Brunel travel to the nearby Martel Temple to search for their teacher and Genis's older sister Raine Sage. After meeting the mercenary Kratos and meeting Colette's Father, and Lloyd & Genis getting punished by their teacher. Colette leaves with Kratos and Raine to the seals while Lloyd and Genis stay behind. After an unfortunate incident, Lloyd and Genis get banished from their village and search for the others. They catch up to them and they travel to the seals to save their world..... or so it seems.

More information from the Unofficial Tales Wiki: http://aselia.wikia.com/wiki/Tales_of_Symphonia

2.) Tales of Symphonia's Legacy

The Tales games itself is considered the 3rd most popular RPG series in Japan(behind Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy). Tales of Symphonia is considered the FF7 of the Tales games at least for the western fanbase. As it made the Tales series more popular in the west due to help from Nintendo's Promotion. Due to this Lloyd Irving is the most recognizable character from the series.

Unfortunately it dropped off for the West sometime after the 10th Installment Tales of Vesperia, which had Namco produce several abysmal or just okay games made from primarly western studios. After reshuffling of staff and stopping Western studios producing games for them they decided to give Tales and other series they neglected in the west another shot. First was Tales of Graces F which had decent sales, but it was Tales of Xillia that more or less revived interest in the Tales series.

To this day every main installment is localized and even some mobile games were too. Tales of Symphonia is still the most recognizable game in the west as it came free on Steam with Pre Ordered copies of Tales of Zestiria(albeit with PR disaster here).

Dwarven Vow #2: Never abandon someone in need.

Eligibility And Chance
1.) Is Lloyd a Video Game Character?

Yes, obviously.

2.) History with Nintendo?

About as much as Square Enix. The first game Tales of Phantasia started on the SNES which is called the RPG That Sings. Although it moved to the playstation mostly. But Symphonia's first release was on the Gamecube, Innocence and Hearts were released on the DS although ported to PS Vita. Tales of the Abyss was ported to the 3DS. Tales of Graces was first released on the Wii and there's suppose to be a future Tales game on the Switch.

3.) Potential Chance

He's still got a good shot right now for a few reasons. Keep in mind these are only MY THOUGHTS on it.

1.) Namco developed the Wii U and 3DS version of Smash Bros and I presume is developing the Switch version too. Although Pac-Man was chosen as Namco Rep which is very unsurprising.

2.) The Smash Ballot. When it was announced right after my most wanted Veteran Lucas was announced as DLC it blown the gates right open. So naturally I voted Lloyd. I'm sure everyone knows how serious that ballot was.

3.) Sega and Capcom got a second 3rd party character in Bayonetta and Ryu respectively as DLC, so I think Namco will probably get a 2nd rep too in this installment.

4.) The Mii Costumes. Lloyd ended up as a mii costume which I was disappointed at. So was K. Rool but then there's a theory that some of the Mii Costumes may have been in the top list of requested characters in the ballot and these are consolation prizes which leads to the next point.

5.) The newcomers for the Switch game may be influenced by the Ballot. I think it was said that the ballot would be used for future installments.

6.) The Tales Series is still on going and the mobile games are helping increase recognition of it. Namco was infamous back then for how they treated the Tales Series but they learned from that mistake.

Moveset and Uniqueness
Dwarven Vow #11: Lying is the first step down the path of thievery
His Moveset potential

This is actually pretty easy. The gameplay of Tales of Symphonia has very common elements with Super Smash bros. Mainly that you have a basic combo attack with the A button and specials with the B button and direction of the analog stick.

Unique Style

A common thing with the newcomers in SSB4 is that most of them have a gimmick or quirk to their gameplay style. Especially the DLC newcomers.

Well luckily for Lloyd there is a gimmick that would make sense. The Tales series is known for categorizing it's special abilities with Base Artes(basic moves) and Arcane Artes(more advance) and combos are based Base Artes -> Arcane. In the case of the Symphonia it goes from Lvl1 -> Lvl2-> Lvl3.

Now for Smash. Lloyd has many techs he can use but he can only be assigned to 4 Special Moves here and since this isn't a Tales game where you can just change it during battle or outside of that. You can't exactly do that here barring Custom moves. But then Tales of Graces gave me a solution to this problem. An Arte Tree.

Tales of Graces battle system included a rather unique and fun basic attack system. It separated moves to A(basic attack) type and B(Special) moves. B moves use the natural Smash Bros special tree. But A moves instead used a tier branch system. There are 4 lvl techs here as seen here. Tales of Graces doesn't use mana. It uses what's called the Chain Capacity Cores which puts a limit on how much you can combo. A common easy combo is a Lvl1-> lvl2 > lvl3 > 4> B Move. Here's a menu of Asbel's A tree.

MOVESETS

Techs

Demon Fang
  • Lloyd creates a shockwave projectile which travels on the floor, causing damage to anyone that comes in contact with it.
- Double Demon Fang:

If pressing the button rapidly, Lloyd launches another Demon Fang.

+

Sonic Thrust
  • Lloyd thrusts his swords forward. if linked to the end of his other combo-canceable attacks, this attack becomes more powerful in means of damage and knockback.
- Beast
  • Another option, in which Lloyd charges power and launches force in shape of a lion's head which can knock back opponents tremendously. The attack has some amount of startup lag though.
(Could also be Forward Smash)

+

Tempest
  • Lloyd spins in a circle in the air several times, whipping both swords around himself.
(Could also be his Neutral Air.)
- Tiger Blade
  • Lloyd jumps and slashes his sword twice in the air. If he connects Tiger Blade with an opponent on the ground, this attack would become Tiger Rage, a more advanced technique where Lloyd now slashes the enemy few times and then slams him down.

+

Sword Rain
  • Lloyd stabs the enemy rapidly with his sword. Another attack that is a great combo starter and can link to other potential finishers.
Final Smash: Falcon's Crest
When pressing the button, Lloyd would thrust his sword forward. If it connects, the opponents will be stunned as Lloyd channels energy in his Material Blades. As he focuses, spiraling vortex of blue energy rages up from the magic circle rapidly damaging opponents and trapping them within the circle.

Lloyd then leaps into the air, pausing for a moment to yell out "Divine Justice!" while he combines his two swords into Eternal Sword.
Lloyd then falls back to the ground slamming down the Eternal Sword, while yelling "Falcon's Crest!" thus generating a large, spherical explosion of blue energy which blasts opponents away.

- This causes immense damage and knockback and can potentially KO or at least launch opponents far away in range due the colossal shockwave that occurs during the move.
- 30-45% Damage, high vertical knockback

Playstyle

What would set Lloyd apart from other swordsmen is him emphasizing on combo-canceling techniques. In ToS he could link certain attacks to others or even create new techs or artes that were combinations of those attacks. This could be translated to Super Smash Bros 4, in which he'd be able to cancel certain attacks and link them to others.

The way this would be utilized by either cancelling the last hit in moves such as Tempest and Sword Rain, or by cancelling the last 20 frames for Demon Fang:

For example, if you want to use Tempest Beast , you would have to first use Tempest (Up B), then cancel the last hit of Tempest and immediately follow up with Beast (Side B). With this kind of a playstyle, Lloyd would have lots of depth while maintaining his versatility for any players to pick him up.

Lloyd could also use combo-canceling mechanic to perform advanced techniques such as Tempest Thrust, Sword Rain Alpha, Raining Tiger Blade, etc. Here's the potential combo-canceable techniques, all imported from Tales Of Symphonia and translated to Smash Bros:

  • Demonic Chaos: Demon Fang x3. Cancel the last 20 frames of the first two Demon Fangs.
  • Sword Rain Alpha: Sword Rain + Aerial Up. Cancel the last hit of Sword Rain and follow up with Aerial Up.
  • Sword Rain Beta: Sword Rain + Aerial Up + Aerial Neutral. Cancel the last hit of Sword Rain and follow up with Aerial Up and Aerial Neutral.
  • Sword Rain Tempest: Sword Rain + Tempest. Cancel the last hit of Sword Rain and follow up with Tempest.
  • Demonic Thrust: Demon Fang + Sonic Thrust. Cancel the last 20 frames of Demon Fang and follow up with Sonic Thrust.
  • Demonic Tiger Blade: Demon Fang + Tiger Blade. Cancel the last 20 frames of Demon Fang and follow up with Tiger Blade.
  • Tempest Thrust: Tempest + Sonic Thrust. Cancel the last hit of Tempest and follow up with Sonic Thrust.
  • Tempest Beast: Tempest + Beast. Cancel the last hit of Tempest and follow up with Beast.
  • Raining Tiger Blade: Sword Rain + Tiger Blade. Cancel the last hit of Sword Rain and follow up with Tiger Blade.
  • Beast Sword Rain: Sword Rain + Beast. Cancel the last hit of Sword Rain and follow up with Beast.
Credits for Kikaru for the playstyle ideas!
Other Potential Tales Representation
Assist Trophies

Kratos Aurion: Uses 'Divine Judgement' and traps anyone around the glyph doing multiple damage and knockback.

Items

  • Apple Gel
"A gelatin-based medication. Restores 30% of Max HP."

- A standard healing item from Tales Of-series. Apple Gel would differ from other healing items by reducing 30% of your max % damage.

  • Lemon Gel
"A gelatin-based medication. Restores 60% of Max HP."

- Essentially a better version of Apple Gel. This is rather uncommon but would be prominent more in harder difficulties of single-player modes.

  • Life Bottle
"Water of life. Revives a KO'd ally."

- Can revive a fallen character in Adventure Mode or Tag Mode (provided there's one), but they will have some penalty, such as starting off with a higher percent.

Is he the best tales rep?
While I would like other characters like Velvet Crowe. He's the most recognizable Tales character in the west and he's pretty much the most requested Tales character for Smash. That Mii costume of him makes me think he scored among the top in the ballot IMO.

I only got to play a bit of this game a while ago (I'm pretty behind on games right now) but I thought Lloyd would make a pretty great Smash character, I definitely support him. The mii costume makes me think he might be considered for this Smash, too.

If Lloyd does get added. I do hope themes outside of Symphonia are added. I really like Berseria's final dungeon theme.

Count me in for my support. I remember back in the Gamecube era when I was first getting into the Tales series and Symphonia was my first entry. Terrific game worthy of being a 9/10. Re-bought the HD Remaster for the PS3 and it was a decision that I was proud of making. Lloyd and Sheena were my favorite characters.

Would love to see that Golden Sun like soundtrack drop in Smash too.

Lloyd would also be considered one of my characters for Super Smash Flash 2. In a game where I could be Sora or Isaac for my mains, I've went with Lloyd. He just happened to be the most fun character I've played.

Yes, Lloyd needs to be in Smash. He's my second most wanted third party character for Smash and I am a huge fan of ToS as well.

There was a problem fetching the tweet

Looks like Namco is also working on this Smash game too. That gives me more hope of Lloyd making it alongside Pac-Man!

I'll put in my support. I got into Symphonia thanks to Lloyd's exposure in SSF2 and his abilities in ToS already feel very ready to be pasted into Smash. We don't have any dual-wielders and I think the likes of him and Elma would only add more diversity to this roster. No concerns about another swordsman to be had here!

Vesperia Definitive Edition just got announced for Switch. I still feel that Lloyd has the best shot as the Tales rep, but if he's not already planned and Vesperia does well on Switch, Yuri may have a fighting chance himself since he's far and away the most popular Tales character.

That looks really cool!

Also of note is that Tales Symphonia's 15th Anniversary is the end of August. And loz18 who leaked the E3 Smash details says there's going to be a direct in August. Of course don't give your hopes up, but still it would be very nice.

With the advent of Inklings having an ink meter and Robin already incorporating weapon durability, I feel like a great system to put into place to compliment his b-move chaining from tales might actually be a TP meter. It would limit how much you use your specials in succession to each other, creating a necessity for resource management in the middle of play. And if you're at 0 TP, all of your specials have lesser effects, such as whatever his up b would be(probably tiger blade) not giving him as much reach.

There is definitely potential to be had in bringing Lloyd to Smash, iconic to the series as he is, as well as his weaponry, and his skills.

I'm not a fan of unnecessary meters. If we have to have a gimmick character, I'd rather see Asch from Abyss, with the ability to create fonon fields.
Though I think my actual top 5, from most wanted to least, would be:

Arche
Lloyd
Cless
Mieu
Chloe

And I absolutely love Pascal but would rather see her reappear in an actually good Tales game than in Smash.

The way I see it is if we do get b-chaining, the only way to properly balance it is to either make it comparatively weaker to use than smash attacks or include some sort of drawback to misuse. A TP gauge would fit just right, especially when Sakurai isn't exactly ruling out those kinds of systems.

Personally, I would play Lloyd even if he didn't have this system in place. However, by making all of his b moves rely on a replenishable source of TP that has to be both managed consciously and replenished consciously would make him a satisfying character to play, at least in my eyes.

I'm suprised this thread isn't longer, he's one of my most expected (and wanted) characters, considering he was a Mii costume last time. I support Lloyd for Smash!

Yeah, I'm surprised that talk about a possible Namco newcomer is so quiet. They're being heavily underrated imo, and while Heihachi would likely get the nod first, they probably have similarly high popularity that could lead to one getting in the base game and the other as DLC. Who knows? If Sakurai still couldn't work out a moveset for Heihachi, maybe Lloyd will get in first!

This is interesting. Apparantly that leaked screenshot with Lloyd's(presumedly) shadow that was "leaked" a while ago had some text. Apparently it's connected to that Nintendo Funkos "leak" It also said that Werites Beacons from Legendia was a stage.

What Werites Beacon looks like BTW.

Keep in mind that is is a 4chan leak, so don't get your hopes up.

Lloyd looks cool with his dual blades and all that.

Okay I only played Lloyd from Super Smash Flash 2 and heard about him during Smash 4 speculation, and ultimately to me, looks like an interesting character. So, I support!

Werites Beacon, eh? That's one of the weirdest leaks I've come across, given both that Legendia's relatively unknown and unloved, even among Tales fans, and that it has no relation to Lloyd.
I'd love to see it but the Tower of Salvation altar room has always seemed like a shoo in to me. I don't buy this leak at all.

Didn't yet come here to show my support, especially after being the OP of the SSB4-era Lloyd Irving Support-thread?

I must fix that.

On that end, the concept of Lloyd using "Magic Series"-styled gameplay (See Fighting Game Glossary) sounds kind of interesting to implement him like - would make him like Ryu of swordfighters in a way.

One of the ideas I was suggested to back then ( kikaru kikaru ) had him be able to link certain specials together to create combinations of them that'd function pretty much like the Advanced Artes in the original series:

On that end, I could probably show the original OP in this post as well - features good sum of music and other useful material for you to use if you like Icedragonadam Icedragonadam - though some links here might have some outdated info, since this goes back to 5 years or so. Hope you don't mind.

With NamcoBandai working in the current Smash Bros-title, there's been couple of debates on potential Namco-reps, the forerunner being Pac-Man in means of popularity and support. After him there comes rather numerable reps from other Namco-series like Heihachi from Tekken, KOS-MOS from Xenosaga and even Klonoa from his titular series.

Soon after that, another interesting detail rose up: one of the members in the Namdai development team was announced to be Yos-hito Higuchi, one of the directors behind Tales Of, Namco's popular action RPG series. Within this announcement, one character was quickly pointed at as the forerunner for Tales Of-representation: Lloyd Irving.

Overview

Lloyd Irving hails from from the fifth, and arguably the most popular game of the series, Tales Of Symphonia, for the Gamecube-system. (and rereleased on PS2 in Japan only).
Being young man who's rather unintelligent and brash, but well-meaning idealist, Lloyd set out to unify the worlds of Sylvarant and Tethealla after going through many life-changing events which revealed the true nature behind Journey of Regeneration in which his close friend, Colette was involved with.

Lloyd would wield two swords (preferably The Material Blades, Flamberge and Vorpal Sword) and could be comparable to Marth in means of having a reasonable range and fast attacks. However, him wielding two blades gives him a lot more versatile moves, thus granting him more options to approach his opponents and fighting against them. He also has one projectile, which is something seldomly seen on a swordsman, parring Link.

Why Lloyd?

Tales Of Symphonia has been known as one of the best and most popular RPGs in the Gamecube, with million copies sold worldwide. Along with this a sequel was developed exclusively for Wii and Lloyd has made couple of quest or cameo appearances in not only in other Tales Of-games, but even in other Namco's games (the most mentioned being him a playable quest character Soul Calibur Legends, also for Wii).
With this note, it's not hard to see that Tales Of Symphonia is undoubtedly one of the most well-known cult games on Gamecube, cementing itself well in history on Nintendo. And even then, has also prominent place in Tales Of-series as a whole.

Back in Brawl-days Lloyd's support was rather notable, but it has lowered to some extent due risen support of Pac-Man. Along with this is the fact that fans can't get over who they would wish to see representing Tales Of-series in general due numerable amount of protagonists from many of their main games in the series. But as Yoshi-to had mentioned, only characters viable for the game would be ones appearing on the Nintendo-system, making only Lloyd, Cless(Phantasia), Luke (Abyss), Asbel (Graces) and Ruca (Innocence) viable.
Taking in account of Symphonia's popularity and presence in Nintendo's systems and history, it would be most agreeable to fans to go with Lloyd Irving and Symphonia's representation.

Playstyle

Spoiler

Extras

(A swell showcase of how he could play generally in Smash Bros-games. There's even combo-cancealing mechanic implemented. )

  • Snake Codec (By Swampasaur)
Otacon: Ah... You're fighting Lloyd, aren't you Snake?
Snake: The kid with two swords?
Otacan: Yes. Him! He's a powerful warrior who fought to bring two falling worlds together.
Snake: Two worlds huh? Kind of like what I'm in now?
Otacon: Uh... well....
Snake: Maybe I can ask him about this whole thing later. What weapons does he have?
Otacon: Well...he uses the eternal sword. Which is...two swords really. One sword has the power of fire while the other has the power of ice. He's an expert on swordplay so stay on your toes!
Snake: A kid who's good with swords saving the world huh? Where have I heard this before?

Both good choices but neither is as iconic or as integral to Symphonia's plot in my opinion.
Plot significance doesn't really dictate which stages get in, if that were true we'd probably have gotten Prison Island for Xenoblade, for example.

They'll add in whatever they feel would best represent Tales
