Introduction
Dwareven Vow #7: Justice and Love will Always Win
1.) Who is Lloyd Irving?Lloyd Irving is the main Protagonist of the Nintendo Gamecube game Tale of Symphonia. The fifth installment in Namco's popular RPG series Tales Of. A Swordmans hailing from the dying world of Sylvarant living in the outskirts of the village of Iselia raised by his Dwarf father Dirk. Every so offten Sylvarant's mana drains and all life wither aways in order to stop this, a chosen of regeneration under the guidance of the Goddess Martel goes a journey to four seals in order to restore the flow of mana. He and his close friends Genis Sage and new Chosen of Regeneration Colette Brunel travel to the nearby Martel Temple to search for their teacher and Genis's older sister Raine Sage. After meeting the mercenary Kratos and meeting Colette's Father, and Lloyd & Genis getting punished by their teacher. Colette leaves with Kratos and Raine to the seals while Lloyd and Genis stay behind. After an unfortunate incident, Lloyd and Genis get banished from their village and search for the others. They catch up to them and they travel to the seals to save their world..... or so it seems.
More information from the Unofficial Tales Wiki: http://aselia.wikia.com/wiki/Tales_of_Symphonia
2.) Tales of Symphonia's Legacy
The Tales games itself is considered the 3rd most popular RPG series in Japan(behind Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy). Tales of Symphonia is considered the FF7 of the Tales games at least for the western fanbase. As it made the Tales series more popular in the west due to help from Nintendo's Promotion. Due to this Lloyd Irving is the most recognizable character from the series.
Unfortunately it dropped off for the West sometime after the 10th Installment Tales of Vesperia, which had Namco produce several abysmal or just okay games made from primarly western studios. After reshuffling of staff and stopping Western studios producing games for them they decided to give Tales and other series they neglected in the west another shot. First was Tales of Graces F which had decent sales, but it was Tales of Xillia that more or less revived interest in the Tales series.
To this day every main installment is localized and even some mobile games were too. Tales of Symphonia is still the most recognizable game in the west as it came free on Steam with Pre Ordered copies of Tales of Zestiria(albeit with PR disaster here).
Dwarven Vow #2: Never abandon someone in need.
Eligibility And Chance
1.) Is Lloyd a Video Game Character?
Yes, obviously.
2.) History with Nintendo?
About as much as Square Enix. The first game Tales of Phantasia started on the SNES which is called the RPG That Sings. Although it moved to the playstation mostly. But Symphonia's first release was on the Gamecube, Innocence and Hearts were released on the DS although ported to PS Vita. Tales of the Abyss was ported to the 3DS. Tales of Graces was first released on the Wii and there's suppose to be a future Tales game on the Switch.
3.) Potential Chance
He's still got a good shot right now for a few reasons. Keep in mind these are only MY THOUGHTS on it.
1.) Namco developed the Wii U and 3DS version of Smash Bros and I presume is developing the Switch version too. Although Pac-Man was chosen as Namco Rep which is very unsurprising.
2.) The Smash Ballot. When it was announced right after my most wanted Veteran Lucas was announced as DLC it blown the gates right open. So naturally I voted Lloyd. I'm sure everyone knows how serious that ballot was.
3.) Sega and Capcom got a second 3rd party character in Bayonetta and Ryu respectively as DLC, so I think Namco will probably get a 2nd rep too in this installment.
4.) The Mii Costumes. Lloyd ended up as a mii costume which I was disappointed at. So was K. Rool but then there's a theory that some of the Mii Costumes may have been in the top list of requested characters in the ballot and these are consolation prizes which leads to the next point.
5.) The newcomers for the Switch game may be influenced by the Ballot. I think it was said that the ballot would be used for future installments.
6.) The Tales Series is still on going and the mobile games are helping increase recognition of it. Namco was infamous back then for how they treated the Tales Series but they learned from that mistake.
Moveset and Uniqueness
His Moveset potentialThis is actually pretty easy. The gameplay of Tales of Symphonia has very common elements with Super Smash bros. Mainly that you have a basic combo attack with the A button and specials with the B button and direction of the analog stick.
Unique Style
A common thing with the newcomers in SSB4 is that most of them have a gimmick or quirk to their gameplay style. Especially the DLC newcomers.
Well luckily for Lloyd there is a gimmick that would make sense. The Tales series is known for categorizing it's special abilities with Base Artes(basic moves) and Arcane Artes(more advance) and combos are based Base Artes -> Arcane. In the case of the Symphonia it goes from Lvl1 -> Lvl2-> Lvl3.
Now for Smash. Lloyd has many techs he can use but he can only be assigned to 4 Special Moves here and since this isn't a Tales game where you can just change it during battle or outside of that. You can't exactly do that here barring Custom moves. But then Tales of Graces gave me a solution to this problem. An Arte Tree.
Tales of Graces battle system included a rather unique and fun basic attack system. It separated moves to A(basic attack) type and B(Special) moves. B moves use the natural Smash Bros special tree. But A moves instead used a tier branch system. There are 4 lvl techs here as seen here. Tales of Graces doesn't use mana. It uses what's called the Chain Capacity Cores which puts a limit on how much you can combo. A common easy combo is a Lvl1-> lvl2 > lvl3 > 4> B Move. Here's a menu of Asbel's A tree.
MOVESETS
Techs
Demon Fang
If pressing the button rapidly, Lloyd launches another Demon Fang.
+
Sonic Thrust
+
Tempest
+
Sword Rain
When pressing the button, Lloyd would thrust his sword forward. If it connects, the opponents will be stunned as Lloyd channels energy in his Material Blades. As he focuses, spiraling vortex of blue energy rages up from the magic circle rapidly damaging opponents and trapping them within the circle.
Lloyd then leaps into the air, pausing for a moment to yell out "Divine Justice!" while he combines his two swords into Eternal Sword.
Lloyd then falls back to the ground slamming down the Eternal Sword, while yelling "Falcon's Crest!" thus generating a large, spherical explosion of blue energy which blasts opponents away.
- This causes immense damage and knockback and can potentially KO or at least launch opponents far away in range due the colossal shockwave that occurs during the move.
- 30-45% Damage, high vertical knockback
Playstyle
What would set Lloyd apart from other swordsmen is him emphasizing on combo-canceling techniques. In ToS he could link certain attacks to others or even create new techs or artes that were combinations of those attacks. This could be translated to Super Smash Bros 4, in which he'd be able to cancel certain attacks and link them to others.
The way this would be utilized by either cancelling the last hit in moves such as Tempest and Sword Rain, or by cancelling the last 20 frames for Demon Fang:
For example, if you want to use Tempest Beast , you would have to first use Tempest (Up B), then cancel the last hit of Tempest and immediately follow up with Beast (Side B). With this kind of a playstyle, Lloyd would have lots of depth while maintaining his versatility for any players to pick him up.
Lloyd could also use combo-canceling mechanic to perform advanced techniques such as Tempest Thrust, Sword Rain Alpha, Raining Tiger Blade, etc. Here's the potential combo-canceable techniques, all imported from Tales Of Symphonia and translated to Smash Bros:
Demon Fang
- Lloyd creates a shockwave projectile which travels on the floor, causing damage to anyone that comes in contact with it.
If pressing the button rapidly, Lloyd launches another Demon Fang.
+
Sonic Thrust
- Lloyd thrusts his swords forward. if linked to the end of his other combo-canceable attacks, this attack becomes more powerful in means of damage and knockback.
- Another option, in which Lloyd charges power and launches force in shape of a lion's head which can knock back opponents tremendously. The attack has some amount of startup lag though.
+
Tempest
- Lloyd spins in a circle in the air several times, whipping both swords around himself.
(Could also be his Neutral Air.)
- Lloyd jumps and slashes his sword twice in the air. If he connects Tiger Blade with an opponent on the ground, this attack would become Tiger Rage, a more advanced technique where Lloyd now slashes the enemy few times and then slams him down.
+
Sword Rain
- Lloyd stabs the enemy rapidly with his sword. Another attack that is a great combo starter and can link to other potential finishers.

- Beast Sword Rain: Sword Rain + Beast. Cancel the last hit of Sword Rain and follow up with Beast.
Other Potential Tales Representation
Assist Trophies
Kratos Aurion: Uses 'Divine Judgement' and traps anyone around the glyph doing multiple damage and knockback.
Items
Apple Gel
- A standard healing item from Tales Of-series. Apple Gel would differ from other healing items by reducing 30% of your max % damage.
-
Lemon Gel
- Essentially a better version of Apple Gel. This is rather uncommon but would be prominent more in harder difficulties of single-player modes.
-
Life Bottle
- Can revive a fallen character in Adventure Mode or Tag Mode (provided there's one), but they will have some penalty, such as starting off with a higher percent.
