Prince of Sable confirmed as an AT for SSB4! Thank you for posting this pic of the day right after your birthday Sakurai, it means so much to me!

From here (Go to 01:24)

Full Soundtrack:

First Appearance: For the Frog the Bell Tolls on the Gameboy in 1992 (Japan only)

Prince Sable is the main protagonist of the game For the Frog the Bell Tolls, who is the prince of the Sabure Kingdom. As he travelled in his quest defeat the powerful King Delarin, he gains powers of transforming into a frog and a snake.

When he transforms into a frog, his jumping ability rises up to a high scale, but his strength becomes to an all-time low. When in Snake form, he damages opponents to their death and has increased speed, but his jumping ability falls off the charts into 1! And as you would expect for a human form, it's the balance between the two form. The transforming aspect can be make him interesting character to play as. If Sakurai were to pick a character from the Gameboy era, Prince Sable would be great choice!

Is he good enough to have a spot in the Smash Bros. Cast? Anyone who played it would remember its satirical and light-hearted moments the game had, exploring the land in a Zelda-esque fashion. In fact, there were some characters from the game that made appearances in the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Wario Land 4.

For those people who are curious to try the game now, here is the link to it.

A Moveset by Speculator

My Moveset:
*This moveset is a combined aspect of using both forms for special and normal attacks*

Special Moves:

Neutral-B:
Dust!: Prince Sable swivels the ground to create dust that stuns opponent for a moment to give priority to do a quick attack. It only last as much as the time Mewtwo used Disable on an opponent.

Side-B:
Whip: Prince Sable turns into a Snake to whip out the opponents straightforward. However, this move does not damage the opponent, but rather make a good knockback far enough to escape from a situation.

Up-B:
Frog Jump: Prince Sable turns into a Frog to jump very high but in a straight vertical way (Just like Luigi’s Super Jump, only higher and a small delay occurs before using). This move does not make knockback, nor does damage anyone. It’s a risky move to use.

Down-B:
En Garde!: Much like Marth’s counter, only it’s a multihitting attack by jamming the special butting to attack more. This move can only be used when Sable is near the opponent(Not Jigglypuff correctly using Rest near, just a little far than that). Oddly enough, this does not create knockback, but it’s worth pummeling out lots of damage out of En Garde!

Smash Attacks:

Side-Smash: Prince Sable turns into Snake form to bite the opponent in great knockback. This attack also stuns the opponent for a short period of time (Referencing how Sable could turn enemies into blocks using Bite) before the knockback begins if you wanna pummel some more.

Up-Smash: Prince Sable turns into Snake form to jump and bite the opponent in the air.
It’s a straight-forward move but powerful in damage and knockback.

Down-Smash: Prince Sable Turns into Snake form to Whip around a circle of knockback. Although not as powerful as the smash attacks, it creates good all around hitbox around Sable for space.

Aerial Attacks:

Neutral-Air: Prince Sable turns into Frog form to scramble attack (much like Luigi’s dash attack) with good knockback at the end. This is good to annoy the opponent, as it fastest to use.

Forward-Air: Prince Sable swings his sword in the air twice for good knockback. Much like Metaknight’s F-Air, only a little slower and better in knockback.

Back-Air: Prince Sable turns into Frog Mode to kick backwards for great knockback. Like Mario’s Back-air, only better in damage and knockback.

Up-Air: Prince Sable turns into Frog Mode to headbutt in the air for good knockback.

D-Air: Prince Sable turns into Frog Mode to kick downwards and (guarenteed) meteor smash. Although it does not do damage and it only can be used when below the opponent, when using D-air when the opponent is on the ground, it pounces the opponent to lie on the ground. This move has very-fast start-up to make up for it.

Standard Attacks:

Neutral Attack: Prince Sable attacks with his Golden Sword to combo into a finishing (Link-Melee-esque) multi-hit jab attack.

Side Attack: Prince Sable swings his sword upward to create knockback vertically. Pretty good move to use if you want be tricky.

Dash Attack: Prince Sable Stabs the opponent similar to one in the final battle. It has great straight forward knockback with great damage.

Down Attack: Prince Sable turns into Snake form to whip out the opponent with slightly good knockback and damage.

Up Attack: Prince Sable turns into Frog Form to spin attack in the (like Olimar’s up attack).

Grabs:
(Prince Sable turns into frog form to capture the opponent with the tongue)

Forward Throw: Prince Sable (In frog form) swings the opponent out in the air forward.

Back Throw: Prince Sable (In frog form) swings the opponent out in the air backwards.

Down Throw: Prince Sable (In frog form) spits out the opponent to the ground to lie the opponent down with good damage.

Up Throw: Prince Sable (In frog form) spits out the opponent in the air and turns into human form to swing his sword in the air for good knockback and damage.

Taunts:

Up Taunt: Prince Sable shows the bag of money (he possibly received back in the end of the game) and drops it (Saying,”Here’s your bet!” in Japanese). The money bag serves as a blocking Sandbag that resists only a few attacks for a short while.

Down Taunt: Prince Sable turns into Snake form and hisses at the opponent.

Side Taunt: Prince Sable turns into Frog form to capture a fly (from the game) with his tongue.

Victory Themes:

Victory 1: Prince Sable turns into frog form and flip bounces around.

Victory 2: Prince Sable plays with his sword and says,”You definitely need some courage” in Japanese.

Victory 3: Prince Sable turns into Snake form and slithers in circles.

Final Smash: Prince Sable creates balls of fire (platform ranged), that if the opponent is surrounded, will be attacked by Sable with the stabs from the final battle, with a powerful stab as the finishing move.

Kaeru no Tame Na Wa Naru Poster

Moveset Options

This is my personal moveset, although it could go several ways. Alternatively, instead of having separate forms, he could transform only to perform his special moves then return to human form.

-Stats-
(Human Form)
Size: Small
Weight and Knockback Resilience: Light
Jump height: Moderately High
Movement Speed: Moderately Fast
Fall Speed: Moderately Slow

(Frog Form)
Size: Small
Weight and Knockback Resilience: Very Light
Jump Height: High
Movement Speed: Slow
Fall Speed: Slow

(Snake Form)
Size: Smallest
Weight and Knockback Resilience: Light
Jump height: Lowest
Movement Speed: Fast
Fall Speed: Moderately Fast

Normal Moves
No point in going into detail over the normal moves because its all just generic sword slashes or punches anyway. Although the snake form would have to result to tailwhips and bites. Bare in mind that the Frog form has the lowest damage output, the Snake form has the highest and the Human form is a balance between the two.

Special Moves
B - En Garde! - The Prince engages a nearby opponent in battle. Both are surrounded by a puff of dust as the battle ensues out of sight. Both the Prince and the opponent take an amount of damage and the opponent is then knocked away. Pressing A or B repeatedly can lightly increase the damage done, although the opponent can do the same. This is the Prince's most valuable move but it is risky to overuse it as you also receive damage in the process. If you use this move while in Frog or Snake form the Prince will instantly transform back into Human form and use the move.

Side B - Leap Frog - The Prince transforms into his Frog form and hops forward several times, doing more damage and jumping higher with each hop. If the Prince lands on top of an opponent during this move he stomps hard, doing moderate damage while knocking them downwards. If used in the air, the Prince leaps forward once then goes into freefall. If you use this move while in Human or Snake form the Prince will instantly transform into Frog form and use the move.

Down B - Snake Bite - The Prince transforms into his Snake form and bites with poisontipped fangs. Any opponent hit gains a poisoned status and takes damage over time for a few seconds. If you use this move while in Frog or Human form the Prince will instantly transform into Snake form and use the move.

Up B - High Jump/Warp Door - The Prince squats, then leaps upwards. Jump height and damage done to opponent is based on which form the Prince is in. If used in the air, the Prince places the Warp Door and goes inside. A moment later it appears a distance away and he exits. If used near a platform it automatically appears on the edge of the ledge and he exits. The Prince goes into freefall state after using this move.

Final Smash - The Spring Bell tolls - The Prince pulls out a small bell and rings it. Suddenly, hundreds of frogs leap onto the stage and bounce around in a frenzy, hitting all opponents.

Yet another character along Lip that I wish to see in Smash despite his relatively low chances. His game is second funniest Nintendo-game I've ever played after Kid Icarus Uprising.

He'd have pretty interesting moveset potential too. On the other hand, I bet people would complain yet again "TOO MUCH SWORD USERS."

/I also hope I get to see both Lip and Sable so it'll be legit to pair them without too much crackiness to it&

Its not like he'd fight similarly to any of the other sword users anyway, being a kid (and not that good at fencing to begin with early in the game).

I for one would to have Sable to represent the Game Boy Era and another child fighter. His animal transformations would make him a unique and funny fighter in the Smash cast. He does look like the perfect rival for Lip or Ness.

Posted this a while back in the original SSB4 Discussion Thread. It is a set I whipped up, quite similar to yours.

B: Financial Naivety - Prince Sable pulls out a massive bag of gold. Wow! He had all of that in his pocket?! If simply tapped, it will be flung in front of him carelessly, crashing into whatever it hits. What is he doing with all of that gold that is spilling out on the floor! *this is where in the Dojo Sakurai shows a picture showing the smashers collecting the gold that spewed out* If held, he will spin it in a circle in his hand harmlessly as you can move around with it. This is so you can then select a directional input for where you toss your riches.

Upward B: Frog Transformation - Sable is falling off the side of the stage... time to recover! But wait... he isn't going up? Sable turns into a small frog with much less weight than his normal form, making him vulnerable to attack, but in return his normal jump prowess sky rockets, allowing him to use his normal jump to reach the stage easy! And if he falls short, tapping A in any direction causes his tongue to flick out, either lightly damaging a character or latching onto the edge of the stage. It should be noted you run slower in this form, as you hop about.

Side B: Royal Duel - In the traditional For the Frog the Bells Toll fighting fashion, Sable has a move that makes him charge a bit and then, if he runs into a character (or multiple, they can get caught in), a dust cloud appears and the characters get locked in a fight that damages them. Players must then tap the B button as quickly as possible to deal the most damage. This move requires confidence, and a willingness to be dealt damage in order to rack up some on your opponent! At the end, the duelers are tossed out.

Downward B: Snake Transformation - He once again transforms, but this one does not increase your jump, in fact, it is decreased, but your movement speed is greatly increased and you become so short in stature most attacks go right over you! Hitting A in any direction will cause the snake to do a bite that poisons foes like the Lipstick weapon. This is good for getting away or harassing enemies, but like with most of Sable's special moves, it must be done with confidence!
I haven't played the game, but watched videos, and think he'd be interesting. A sequel or reboot would be quite interesting as well! Or at the very least a VC.

That would probably be more like Sakurai's moveset. He would have to think awful highly of the game to put 3 movesets worth of character like mine. I also recommend you play it now that it has a near-perfect fan translation. I'm sure you can find it online somewhere to
purchase.

I was and and still am in full support of him. Important to note however that in older smash journal entries from sakurai, he got an email about Sable

Essentially, the fan asked if he could put Prince Sable AND Prince Richard in the game. In response, Sakurai said somewhere along the lines that he's a big fan of the game but doesn't think Prince Richard warrants an inclusion as well

So far so good right? He then went on that the idea of a "tag-team" character that involves both sable and richard would be interesting, as he wants to explore that idea in the "future"

Something just to think about :)

assuming this is true, and adding the fact that Sakurai wants to bring older characters, he will likely appear in SSB4.

Reposting Parrot Head's moveset because why not.

"This is a tag-team similar to the Ice Climbers from Ice Climber.

Name: Sablé and Richard
First Game Appearance: Kaeru No Tame Ni Kane Wa Naru (A Bell Tolls for the Frog) (Japan-Only)

SPECIAL MOVES:

B: Ultra Fence (This move is a little slow, but it is less than half as powerful as DK's Giant Punch. It is a fence that flashes.)

Forward+B: Hop'N'Slash (Sablé and Richard will transform into their frog forms, while they'll hop and slash simultaneously against their opponent(s), until they send a firm swing against their opponent(s). After that, they'll transform back to their human forms.)

Up+B: Vertical Spin Slash (Similar to Adult/Young Link's, but vertical. Sablé and Richard put their backs against each other, while they hold their swords straight in front of themselves, while they spin vertically.)

Down+B: Snake Bite (Sablé and Richard will transform into their snake forms, and strike their opponents with a poisonous bite that may poison their opponent(s) for a very short time. After that, they'll quickly transform back to their human forms.)

Super Smash Move: Rival Duel (Sablé and Richard puts the nearest opponent between them, then they dash toward the opponent and rapidly slashes and fences their opponent while the battle clouds up around them very fast).

Taunt: Holds their swords crossed together.

Entrance: Appears on stage in their frog forms, while they both eat strange apples to change them back to human again.

I must say, this is quite a good moveset, and a good way to represent the game.

a bit of trivia here... Prince Richard appeared in Zelda: Link's Awakening. so... this would be the second time Link and Richard appeared in the same game.

Doesn't "Sable" not have a real name, and is merely "Prince of Sable"?

How would that translate into a character, or a tag-team? Wouldn't he and Richard be "Princes of Sable"?

Not trying to denounce this idea, I just don't know that much about this game or these characters.

EDIT: After doing some research, this seems like a type of game that I feel would be cool to revive and expand.
Especially if Wart becomes integrated in this series. Well, I mean, he IS a frog king, has appeared in Link's Awakening like Richard did, and has shown to be not that bad of a guy outside of the world of Subcon. He's also been shown to be able to travel between worlds.

Its simply "Prince Sable." The kingdom is named after his name, sable"

I.e. There is a place named "Kingdom of Golden Yuiitusin", and You are "Prince Golden Yuiitusin," which is simply your name with an honorific/title

In terms of translating, it would most likely be "Sable & Richard" as both are from opposing kingdoms iirc

That would be an awesome idea. It would be too much of an opportunity to pass making King Wart a boss in the single player mode and having Sable (or sable&richard) to "encounter them"

I though he was named after his kingdom...
So it's really a situation like (sorry for dragging DBZ into this) Planet Vegeta, which was named after King Vegeta of the Saiyan race?

putting crudely, he is Prince Sable of Sable, because the kingdom and the prince's name are the same.

I'm not that familiar with the DBZ franchise, been a while since I read on it

Let me reiterate it as so:

Character is called Sable. He is a Prince. The kingdom is named "Sable." Assuming his father, whose also named sable, is the founder of the kingdom.

So In that respect, yes he is like vegeta's scenario

putting crudely, he is Prince Sable of Sable, because the kingdom and the prince's name are the same.
Pretty much this

EDIT: Prince Richard, forgot to add, is his rival obviously. He is not from the same kingdom, but rather from a rival one called the "Custard Kingdom." Making him, "Prince Richard of Custard"

"IF" they were a tag team, it'll be simply "Sable & Richard" or "Prince Sable & Richard"

Technically "Prince Sable"-name is something the fans have put up for Sable, because official pages for him (in japanese site and Wikipedia) refer him as "Prince Of Sable.". This is because you can name him in the game. So actually he doesn't have an official name, but fanon calls him "Prince Sable". (Think like Mario living in Brooklyn-fanon stuff)

But in any case, I hope they'd let him be called "Prince Sable" in Smash Bros.

if that's the case, it wouldn't be the first time where a dev team adopts fan names as official.

I'm warming up to the idea of this character a lot, actually. I wonder if they chose to include him, if he'd get a updated, "older" look, like Pit. I feel like it would be possible since the series has cameos in the Zelda series, they might update their appearance to be somewhat similar to that. (which would be interesting for the various forms of the character).. but maybe they wouldn't do that at all.

I can see him in my mind as someone Sakurai could pick for reviving another series.

You know, I would like to know where the general direction is over the "Sakurai considering a Sable/Richard tag-team" info, so I can see if I can find it myself.

Ehh...
Adding him isn't a bad idea but, he's just not that popular to make it in.
If anything, I think he'll appear as an Assist Trophy.

Kinda wierd that there's even been few polls showing him as a choosable choice and like, showing that people think of him to be a viable choice despite his unpopularity. And some cases when choosing the characters, the popularity doesn't always count. (R.O.B, Roy, Pit)

Its happening.

Hopefully we get an english port out of this.
This honestly isn't that suprising or anything, Nintendo seems very keen to release most of its GB titles for the VC (except for Pokemon), which is great.

The only thing that would surprise me is if we get a translation, which seems very very unlikely. It's not like KI:OMaM, where all they had to do was translate a few things in Japanese, this game is pretty text heavy compared to other GB games and probably wouldn't do phenomenally outside of Japan anyway.

Indeed, not to mention we already got a fan translation which suffices very well for many as the english counterpart. But it's great to see this game's being digged up now too. (-l3l-)

Speaking of that, I'm working in this finnish Nintendo-fan site called Leveli, where I do reviews on hidden gems of videogames (mainly those not released in Europe and such). I had done the first one now and it's about FTFTBT. Here's the review if you feel like checking (but it's entirely finnish).

I seen both of these references since I played both titles. Throwing the doctor around was the funniest parts in Wario Land 4. XD At least a few international references to Sable's game spreads some awareness of his existence.

Loving the art BTW.

That was pretty hilarious, and thanks!~
I knew the WL4-one but not the WL3-one! Seems like this game used to appear time to time before.
Agreed , the WL3 item was a very subtle and clever way to reference the game

Also, I got something cool for you guys. This site is one of the most popular underground remix sites in Japan; and they specialize in Video Game Music. They finally got around making an album for Sable's game!~ Here is an assorted sample of the Frog Bell Tolls remix album

Listen to all of it, pretty good don't you think? :awesome:

Sweeeet!!! I can't believe this game has such a cult following despite all these years it's been kinda in the obscure side. (-l<>l)

I'm loving the hell out of the theme, could work swell in some spinoff game.

as he seems more popular than I expected, maybe I'll add this guy to my support list.

a translation of the game to English and it's subsequent release on the VC would benefit him as well.

...and I bet my 5 cents on how those fan artworks are from Pixiv.
