What are some good places to grab them from? All I know of is Play-Asia but I'm wondering if there's better options.

PlayAsia is good, but so is Amazon. Most of my imports (few, but existant) I find on Playasia first and then price check to Amazon, it's almost always easier to find and cheaper on Amazon.

Doesn't amazon.jp usually not ship internationally?

Amazon is where my friend did it to play the Japanese Attack on Titan game. He got it fine!

I just got a Japanese 3DS from Amazon and it's doing just fine. I got a pre-owned Flare Red one for $150 + $6 for faster shipping and it's in great condition. Some of the paint on the back is a little chipped, but it plays like a dream. It even came in the original packaging with a charger, stylus, and AR cards. I got the last one that the seller was selling though (they guaranteed it being shipped securely by Amazon), but the other sellers look fine. I could have paid more for a new one, but it's already costly with Smash on the way and a new SD card needed (mine only had 2 GB).

Here's the link that I found mine at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...2&sr=8-3&keywords=japanese+3ds&condition=used

I'm tempted to buy both the JP 3DS and the game... but I already pre-ordered my copy of Smash and already own a US 3DS. e_e;;

It's tempting.

Thanks guys! I'd almost have to wonder if getting Smash digitally would be the way to go with the Japanese release, though.

That seems to be the most direct/fast way. I plan on getting a Japanese 3DS point card from Play Asia and uploading my points to my Japanese 3DS so that I have them ready before Smash Bros comes out. You'll need an SD card bigger than 2.1 GB though (the Japanese one I got was 2 GB, but a US SD card should work too.

I'd say the better option if you don't already have one is just wait the 20 days until it comes out for us.

What's tempting about spending about $200 to play a game 20 days early?

What he does with his money is his business, and if he feels like it's worth it, then it's worth it.

Personally, I don't feel it's worth it. I would basically be buying a Japanese 3DS for one game, when I already did that for my American 3DS. Unless somehow you can get a refund for the system and game when it releases in the U.S. assuming you don't have a system already.

To be fair, when Smash 3DS comes out, if I wasn't going to get it, I'd be spending a large chunck of my free time looking at Smash Bros info online anyway. Let's pretend that I have a choice of playing Smash Bros for 2 hours every day or looking online at Smash Bros info for 2 hours. That's 40 hours of Smash Bros interaction in those 20 days (and some days will be more or less). I'd rather spend 40 hours of my life playing a game instead of just chasing down info and watching videos on YouTube. Is $200 worth spending 40 hours of my life in a more enjoyable manner?

To me, yes it is. To others, it may not be. I also softened the purchase by only putting my tip money from my summer of working towards it and am not taking much away from my overall finances. And I spend money pretty frugally- I've only bought two games in the entirety of 2014, so I'd gladly spend money on early Smash. So only do this if you're financially stable.

I wouldn't use PlayAsia for preorders; I preordered a game that was much less popular than Smash through them with their most expensive shipping option and they didn't ship it until three days after release and for some reason told UPS to hold it an extra day, so I didn't get it for about a week.

If I were to get a Japanese 3DS, would there be an option to change the language to English? In the 3DS and in the Smash game?

In the 3DS: Nope!

In Smash: There's no way to know until we have the game. Chances are fairly slim however.

Also pretty sure it's region locked so you'd be buying a system just to play one game a few weeks early but I remember being a kid with disposable income too so have fun.

Will the Japanese version be compatible with the US version for local multiplayer? Sorry if obvious but just seems I'll get the fastest answer here. I'll have no interest in a japanese version if once the US version comes out I can't play with anyone else, which I am betting is the case.

If you buy the Japanese version and 3DS, hope you enjoy not being able to play with anyone else at tournaments who has a US version for 2 months until the Wii version comes out.

That's a really good question. Was it possible to play against Japanese players in Brawl online? It should definitely be possible when playing with friends.

Online is different. You can play 3DS games online with people in japan and US because Nintendo's servers handle it. I am referring to local multiplayer. Like if you were to bring you 3DS to a tournament.

I think it should be possible. The region protection should only prevent your system from using the hardware, but it may not be possible with download play (playing multiplayer with multiple systems on one cartridge).

I'm gonna google this.

I googled it and it depends on the game. SF4 isn't region locked but MK7 is region locked. So allegedly (I cant confirm it but per some posters on gamefaqs) if you tried to play Mario Kart 7 local multiplayer with someone who has a Japanese 3DS, you can't play together.

there's a thread on it but everyone there is clueless as well (when it comes to Local Multiplayer, NOT Wifi internet play which we're certain will be fine)

Thanks for the info. I guess it would make sense for Nintendo to region lock their games to prevent a possible hemorrhage in sales per capita. So I guess purchasing the Japanese system is only worth it's weight in other players who are also willing to do the same, which in this case, would be the minority.

If you're going to do that, get a 2DS at least.
