Before the discussion starts let me make this clear: This isn't the thread for ****posts or flaming. If you have a disagreement, be respectful and rational about it.

Anyhow,
I've always wanted to ask this question because I've noticed this been mentioned here and there for quite some time. It is about Smash Bros. fans not caring or playing other Nintendo games these characters originated from.

On one hand, yes, I'm sure that people who play Smash Bros do in fact play the games because it features an All-Star cast of characters from Nintendo's properties and it is AMAZING to see them in one game. I won't ever forget my excitement seeing Kirby and Pikachu in the same game and Kirby wearing Mario's hat as a kid.

Now, on the other hand, there does seem to be people who just play the game strictly to compete and don't really bother with any other game. Just Smash Bros.

I'm thinking this is the main reason: Focusing on one game and getting better at it. Will spend hours upon hours trying to learn every trick and facet the game has to offer. This is similar to those who play Call of Duty, League of Legends, DOTA2 and other games (including MMOs such as World of Warcraft).

The bad side of this is that some players believe because they're great at Smash Bros means they know everything about the characters featured within the game. One well-known player last year at a tournament didn't even know that when Kirby eats another fighter, he gains their copy abilities. Or that "Wii Fit isn't on Wii U" even though the game was announced in 2011 alongside the initial reveal of the console. And I'm sure people have came across many situations such as this. But I digress.

So, Smash fans- why do YOU play Smash Bros? And do you also enjoy the games these characters originated from?

Some franchises, yeah.

I started playing Smash because I played Mario and Pokémon games. In turn, Smash introduced me to several other franchises like Zelda or Fire Emblem.

Smash Bros. is still one of my favorite series thanks to its crossover aspect and unique gameplay.

I play mostly Smash. Yes, I care about other Nintendo games but I don't play them. I've considered that New Mario Cat game and Mario Kart 8.

I thought this thread was done already. Why do we keep getting so many duplicate threads in this section?

Oh well. I like Smash because it's fun to play alone, with friends and it introduces me to some Nintendo characters who's games I've probably never heard of and won't play for awhile if ever.

I care about Metroid, Mario and Pokémon besides SSB.
I.. I never really play Pokémon but still am very interested in it for some weir reason.
Also, Metroid's my favourite game series of all time together with Smash Bros.

So yeah, I do care about other Nintendo games.

Lying about my country.
I would guess most people get into Smash because they're Nintendo fans.

Though I've met some who are only really into PC games or Sony consoles and stuff, that also like Smash quite a bit. There's this guy at my job that's thinking on getting a 3DS just for Smash, but he's not really into anything else from Nintendo.

Still, those are definitely minorities.

Me? I got into the series at first because I was a big fan of both Mario and Pokémon, but I ended up liking Smash as a game of it's own, and it definitely became my most played N64 game as a kid.

Thanks to Smash, I started getting into other series too, like Kirby, Metroid and especially Zelda, which is now one of my favorite game series.

And of course, learning about these characters and playing their games made me appreciate Smash even more, now I'm pretty big on everything Nintendo, and it was all thanks to Smash. I mean for real, the only games from the original Smash Bros. I knew were Mario and Pokémon, everything else was new to me. The lightning-fast space fox? The cool guy with the sword and shield? The orange "robot" that shot giant balls of energy? The surprisingly powerful pink ball? The psychic kid that attacked with a yo-yo of all things? The muscly man with a helmet? They were all new to me, but I eventually searched and learned of all their games, and loved them to death.

So yeah, Mario and Pokémon led me to Smash, which instantly became one of my favorite games ever, and eventually Smash led me to all these other games that I now love.

No matter how much fanservice for other series is included in Smash, I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much if the gameplay weren't as top-notch as it is.

If it had the most top-notch gameplay of any game in the world, I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much if it didn't have as much fanservice as it does.

I'd say people who play Smash Bros. that aren't a major fan of Nintendo in general are few and far between. I love Smash Bros. but before that I loved Donkey Kong and Zelda far more. Smash Bros. also got me into Fire Emblem, which I love to death as well. I like some Mario games, and definitely liked Mario before Smash Bros., but Mario hasn't clicked with me as well as DK and Zelda have. But regardless I grew up playing Nintendo in general and I was interested in Smash Bros. to play as a variety of Nintendo characters.

I play Smash because I love the gameplay and nothing else.

I use to be into Mario, and I still am kinda but only with older ones.

I use to be into the Pokemon games, but they bore me now.

Zelda games I never cared for.

I've always been intrigued by the Metroid games, but I have higher priority games.

I do love the Fire Emblem games.

Pikmin isn't too bad.

Not really interested in DK games.

I've always like the SF characters, but always hated the gameplay.

Sonic is kinda eh.

Kirby is also eh.

I do plan to eventually get into the Mother series from everything I have heard about them.

Most of the games the characters originate from I don't care about, don't care about anymore, only care about the older games, or am interested in but have other games I want to play first.

The only reason Nintendo is currently my fave company is because most of the games I enjoy are found primarily on Nintendo consoles, but most of these games are 3rd party.

But you see, I don't play games because of something stupid such as company loyalty. I play games based on how much I enjoy the gameplay and I think Smash has phenomenal gameplay. I'm not really a true fan of any company. It's just that Nintendo systems have the most games I enjoy the most currently. Nothing else to it.

I wouldn't even bother with Smash Bros if the game didn't have Nintendo-related characters. I would instead dedicate my time exclusively to other (better) fighting games. I don't like EVERY franchise represented in Smash, but the ones I like, I really like.

I am not saying the gameplay in Smash isn't good. It is fantastic, it just not the best (but that means little). I have to say that I find really weird when someone says they play Smash Bros but don't like/don't care about Nintendo characters.

To be honest, I really don't play videogames that much at all. Smash is the only game I really care about.

I'm noy like those tournament players mentioned in OP's post. I know my stuff about games even if I don't really play them.

I would assume so. I mean, if you're playing a game all about Nintendo characters that would mean you at least tolerate Nintendo.

If you were asking me, it depends.
I love Nintendo. But it's not like I'm some big knowledgeable Nintendo guru. Or I care about every franchise represented, some of them I haven't even played. A good example is with Villager. He's one of the few newcomers I'm excited about, but I find Animal Crossing boring. Or even Olimar, and I've never played Pikmin.

Heck, The majority of games I play are Virtual Console games. That alone should tell you something about me. Sure, maybe there's a few that have caught my interest, but other than that I haven't really cared much for the newer games, skipping some entirely. Smash is the only one I've been looking forward to.

So long story short: Yes, I care about other Nintendo games, but not all of them.

I found this part kinda ironic, considering that Nintendo has the worst third party support today.

Because of Smash Bros. it has always been my goal to obtain a game from every series represented. As of Brawl's characters, I have every series except Mother. So yeah, Smash Bros. has definitely encouraged me to player the original games of the characters represented (even AT's!)

I love other Nintendo games! I actually am trying to begin a Nintendo collection, like this. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dpX5XqRtGdc

I've been with Nintendo since their days with the N64 (best console ever in my opinion), and I'm thinking of starting my collection there.

I care about Nintendo a lot, but now that I think of it there are quite a few series with Smash reps I haven't tried: DK, Yoshi, Game & Watch, Fire Emblem, Star Fox, Earthbound/Mother, Metal Gear, Sonic...

I've heard a great deal of good things about these series, so I really feel as though I should try them (except maybe G&W).

Note that familiarity with the series has little correlation with my mains; I played quite a bit of Brawl Snake and Lucas:M.

I play Nintendo and second party games almost exclusively. I like pretty much all the franchises in Smash but don't care much for Pokemon.

I pretty much only play Nintendo games, partially out of availability and partially because not many other games pique my interest.

I'm a Nintendo nut. I don't claim to know everything or play everything, but the only non-Nintendo console I own is a PS3. I have some big name stuff like Mario, Zelda and Pokémon as well as games that are part of less popular series like Custom Robo Arena and Fire Emblem 8 and 13. If it interests me, I'll play it. Simple as that.

The only character I really play as in Smash who I'm unfamiliar with is Roy. I know what game he's from (Binding Blade), but I haven't played it before. Same goes for Olimar and C.Falcon, but I don't really play as them anyway.

I've always been a gigantic Nintendo fan, so I play basically every franchise I can find. I've played every franchise that has a playable character in Smash Bros. except for F-Zero, Game and Watch,Wii Fit, Gyromite, Metal Gear, and Mega Man.

Smash Bros. would be pretty darn boring if I didn't know and enjoy the characters in it.

Yeah, I've only owned Nintendo consoles, and I play a lot of the series in the game. Playing Smash 64 at a friends' house originally got me started on the series as I wanted to play as Pikachu/Jigglypuff. I also played Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and Yoshi in the N64 and earlier era though. Melee got me into one of my current favorite series, Fire Emblem, and I also play Animal Crossing, certain DK games, and have a few F-Zeroes.

As many others have said, I love the crossover, it introduces me to other games (Earthbound, Metroid, Fire Emblem), but most of all I do play some of the big games which got me started with Smash Bros 64.

Definitely, most Smash fans are avid Nintendo fans, Of all the consoles I've owned, only one has been non-Nintendo. I'm always looking out for new or old Nintendo games to play :D

Amidst the abounding light of heaven!
My first console was an N64 and, had it not been for Tales of Symphonia hooking me on the niche genre that is real time JRPGs, I would never have touched a non-Nintendo console. I don't play too much of the Nintendo allstars anymore but petty much anything that could be considered an N64 classic holds major nostalgia for me.
That said, combat-wise, I'm not a big fan of the characters I have outside attachment to in Smash. They just don't stand out enough. I prefer to play as the more out there characters like Kirby and Game & Watch.

So I guess it's the characters that drew me to the game, the gameplay that hooked me and the music that keeps it in my head.

I do still appreciate the cast's non-Smash appearances though (excluding Mario Kart, that series is just terrible in so many ways).

Smash introduced me to a lot of franchises I probably would have ignored otherwise, (EarthBound, Fire Emblem, Pikmin etc.) but there were plenty of series I played before I got into Smash. (Mario and Pokemon mostly) I probably do play Smash more than I should and should actually play other games more though.

Why do I play ssb? Simple, it's a gigantic piece of art that is the masterpiece of the masterpieces (which isn't even including the gameplay whicch make this series even better).

I need to summarize my story with ssbm: there's a reason why I consider it my best game of all time. And believe it or not, it has nothing to do with HOW MUCH content this game has but HOW it's implemented.

ssbm was without any doubt the best experience I lived in my entire life. It would be impossible to top this today because I learned SO MUCH that I can't go higher now. I was amazed by how this game not only create an enjoyable experience but how much details was put into it. It became so memorable that after stopping video games for years, my nostalgia just got back and this little push is what made me realize how video games are art and not just a time burner. If you don't understand what I mean, I recommend to watch the youtube series "history behind super smash bros melee" or the brawl one. By watching those videos, I realized that how much interest that was put into this game is crazy because it translates PERFECTLY all the in game elements like they was in their own game. And the next part is why I still love Nintendo and prioritize innovation over appearance: it basically introduced me to the other masterpiece created with that much interest. Where it gets even better is that these games doesn't weaken through time because they were so well tough that they just refuse to get old and by playing ssbm, I realized that some games are meant to be enjoyed at any time.

Now, you know why I care a lot about Nintendo games and especially smash. Smash is the universal point between those games but each game has his own thing that makes him unmatchable and smash basically makes a tribute to those thing. I can understand the gameplay part but for me, I enjoy smash for EVERY elements because they all came from other games that were and some are still innovative which let me remind you is something that makes this industry more diverse and less boring.

To put this in perspective, If I haven't played ssbm and no ssb title, you wouldn't read this message nor know me on this forum, I wouldn't check Gonintendo every day, wouldn't play games, wouldn't care for them, wouldn't have bough a gc after selling it. SSB literally changed my life and that is all because of Sakurai and I need to thanks him by enjoying what he introduced to me: Nintendo inc as a masterpiece game-maker.

I think the real question is, are you a fan of individual Nintendo series outside of Smash Bros. or are you a poser? :D

Well here are my Nintendo credentials:

First, I collect retro games. I own an NES, SNES, original GameBoy, GBA, GameCube, 3DS and Wii U. I sold my N64 long ago, with regrets :'(.
  • Super Mario: I grew up playing Mario. Who didn't? Mario 3, Mario World, Mario 64... All good in my book. The newer games seem to be getting a little stale though. I found Galaxy to be the last innovative one. But damn was it ever innovative!
  • Zelda: My favorite game series. Ocarina of Time is still my favorite individual game; the only game I consider 100% perfect. LttP, Majora, Wind Waker and Twlight Princess all all obviously amazing as well. Didn't care for Skyward Sword too much though... Also, musical perfection. Kondo Koji is magnificent.
  • Metroid: I love Metroid too, probably runner up for my favorite game series. I beat Super Metroid more or less on a yearly basis. Metroid Prime series is great. Other M sucked and ruined Samus forever.
  • Donkey Kong: The DKC trilogy as a whole is probably my favorite 3 part game series. I still like part 3 the best, although nobody seems to like Kiddy. :D PS: David Weise is a legendary composer.
  • Pokemon: I played up to gen 2 as a kid before I kinda outgrew turn based RPGs and getting out of these games. However, I've been playing a bit online on Pokemon Showdown. It's still a lot of fun.
  • Kirby: Kirby's world is a little too sickeningly adorable for my taste and the games are a bit too easy, but I can't deny Kirby's Adventure and Kirby 64 were great though. Great music too.
  • Star Fox: Never really cared for Star Fox much actually. I find it shallow and repetitive.
  • Pikmin: Love these games. So peaceful working my loyal slaves to their death in the name of profits for their corporate master. Good stuff. It teaches the kids about the virtues of capitalism.
  • Earthbound. I played it, beat it, own the SNES cart, and honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. Sure it's funny, but it ain't no Super Mario RPG or Chrono Trigger. But like I said, I don't really like turn based RPGs like I used to. Which reminds me...
  • Super Mario RPG. Friggin epic. Oh wait - Square made this game. Never mind.
  • Paper Mario / Mario and Luigi - quite lame when compared to Super Mario RPG. Haven't played them since the N64/GCN/GBA days.
  • Kid Icarus: The NES game is so dickishly frustrating, but I beat it. And I love it. I was a huge advocate of Pit for Melee and Brawl. I was not displeased by Uprising either.
  • Mario Kart: I liked Super MK and MK64 the best. I am intrigued by MK8 though,
  • Animal Crossing: I played it a bit on GameCube back in the day. It's cute and charming, but not something I'd want to play now.
  • Wii Fit: Didn't play it.
  • Punch-Out: Love, love, love this series. I've always been a fan of beating up over the top hilarious stereotypes. The Wii reboot is probably the greatest thing ever. Take that you croissant eating frog!
  • Wii Sports: My roommates and I were addicted to Tennis, Bowling and Golf back with this thing first dropped. Miis are adorable too. How could you not want Miis in Smash Bros? How I ask you?!
  • Fire Emblem: Although I've kinda outgrown turn based RPGs, the strategy aspect of FE is a redeeming factor of these games for me. I just beat Awakening recently. I was glad to be with finished it honestly.
  • Advance Wars: The poor man's Fire Emblem; they're not bad.
  • Eternal Darkness. Does anyone remember this game? I do! It's pretty rad. I think there's going to be a spiritual successor on Wii U and if so, I will buy it and sell my soul to Kutulu all over gain.... I mean Xelatoth.
  • Sin and Punishment: Didn't play it.
  • Star Tropics: I just barely got these games on eBay. They are quite good. But I see why Nintendo didn't make more, as it's a pretty blatant Zelda rip off. Also, they were never released in Japan.
  • Golden Sun: I played the first two together as a lad and put in that damn password that links them together too.
  • Xenoblade: I played this game for 50 hours before my roommate moved out and took the Wii with my save file on it. While I appreciate the innovations, the actual battle system and story bored me. I kept playing for art direction and the music. PS: I hate Shulk. He's a total douche. Put him in Smash Bros. so I can beat his British ass in with Little Mac. Everyone knows how Little Mac hates foreigners.

Well I never owned the original SSB on an N64, but by the time Melee came out I had played games from every franchise represented except for ICs, FE and G&W. To date, The Legend of Zelda is my favorite series, and I probably enjoy speedrunning OoT, MM, and TP just as much as I enjoy playing smash, if not more. On top of that, smash introduced me to the Fire Emblem series, which I have grown to like a lot.

So I'm a huge Nintendo fan. I'm a database of obscure knowledge for the company and own almost every console they made. Even though I find Smash to be an amazing game, I love it mostly because of it's Nintendo content.

Can't say the same for some of my friends though. They aren't really Nintendo fans but love Smash to death. Because of this, they never look at any of the trophies or try to learn anything about these characters and games. They just don't care. Makes me kind of sad. Especially when I assume most people are like this too.

See, I had always hoped the trophies in Smash would help educate buyers on other Nintendo series. But that's not the case. The only people who look at trophies are fans like me who already know about these franchises. Sorry Wonderful 101, but having a trophy in Smash won't help towards getting people to buy your game.

I love Smash because it is a fighting game and because of its characters.
Looking at the original Smash on the N64...
Mario, DK, Yoshi, Pokemon are all games that I loved to play. I even played some Kirby games on the Gameboy a really long time ago. And Lylat Wars on the N64 (I didn't own it, but played it with friends when visiting them - I borrowed it once too to play through it).

Then with each Smash game there were even more cool additions. Although there are some characters I had never heard of before. I'm not interested in any new stuff, so I only like the ones I liked as a kid. It's mostly Smash that I care about now, I do still buy some other games here and there though (Mario Galaxy 1+2, Pokemon games, the new DKC games, ...).

Of course I love Nintendo games. It's the sole reason I picked up a Wii U. I remember picking up Super Smash Bros Melee after playing it at someone's house and the fact that I was into Mario and Pokemon games at the time. I only got into Zelda and Metroid games AFTER playing Smash.

Looking at my game collection I'd that abouttttt 90% are Nintendo games. I've loved Ninty since I was a boy and got my SNES.

Smash introduced me to F-Zero, Fire Emblem and KI.
