I see occasional taunts after getting a klil, but I never see people taunt in the middle of a fight. I think you're supposed to taunt when the opponent has a chance to hit you, right?

Taunt whenever you feel like it.

Usually I keep taunts for after I take a stock, unless I'm playing Falcon. When I play Falcon I pretty much taunt every time I feel like I've earned it. For example, if I perform a cool combo which knocks the opponent off the stage but doesn't kill them, I'll taunt instead of edge guarding. I'll also do it to annoy or lure out defensive players.

What I like to do is dashdance -> taunt mid match as Falcon. I also to taunt cancel in various ways (Ex: Taunting as Randal disappears on YS).

What are other ways of taunt canceling in melee?
You can do it on the windmill on Stadium.

I always taunt when I pull off something that looks cool. With Bowser I just love ending a combo with a mighty roar. WIth Jigglypuff I always pause on the wink and zoom in.

When I taunt depends entirely on the situation and who I'm playing. When I'm playing casual matches against friends and family I just spam taunts whenever I get a kill, but usually during heated matches or tournaments I use the time in which my opponent is dying to gather my thoughts and move to an advantageous position on the stage. So no taunts in that scenario.

For some reason I like taunting when I'm winning or even losing it just messes with the other person and I end up winning most the times, it's kind of like a weird mind game like I got ken comboed once and as soon as I respawned I just taunted and I guess it just makes the other person nervous of how unfazed I was.
Captain Falcon's taunt is the best in the game imo.

Basically, my philosophy is this: The taunt is one of the character's moves, and like all the other moves the character possesses, it has its appropriate time to be used. If I feel like it's time for a Nair on shield to poke, then I'll do just that. If I want to ask my opponent to kindly Demonstrate his Maneuvers whilst giving a brisk salute and a saucy throw of my hips after I spot dodged a shine, I'll press up on the d pad. Simple as that.

Even when i started i enjoyed taunting right after a kill, alot of people will think, "im going to punish him" then end up giving me a free shield grab or just mindlessly rush in and lose their invincibility frames
