Well this is my second time posting on Smashboards, but, yeah i was at the Saturday Animania and competed in the brawl comp.

There were 80 contestants, 4 divisions and 5 brackets in each. Only the one winner from each bracket moved on to the next set of matches.

Rules:

Prelims were: Pictochat, 3 stock, 4 player FFA, all items on high.
Secondaries were: Wario Ware, 3 stock, 4 player FFA, all items on high.
Semi Finals were: Corneria, 2 stock, one match was 3 player FFA, other was 2 players. All items off.
Final was: Final Destination, 5 stock, 2 players, Smash Balls on low. .5 damage ratio.

First couple of matches of the prelims had only smash balls, dragoon, assist trophies and green shells on, because the people running it didn't change it till a few games in. Also the frequency of the items in the Prelims seemed to fluctuate (from low->medium->high).

Some people didn't change their tags between games, so i can't make a proper judgment of who i thought was good.

I went by the tag 'chump' (i don't know why), played as Lucario, got knocked out in secondaries... my 'johns' for this happening are: Wario Ware is a tarded level for a fair match & smash balls.. the hell.

The winner of the comp was my good friend 'Isorropia', who went by the tag 'Iso'. He played as Marth in the finals, and was against a really nice guy who played as Pokemon Trainer, i don't know if he used a tag, and if he did, i don't remember it, (sorry >.<).

I didn't see all the matches, but the majority of people were pretty lackluster. Some players i saw there who played well there had the tags '!' and 'Bjay' (Bjay wasnt in the competition though). A lot of the 'better' players got gang banged or unlucky in the prelims and secondaries.

Marths, Ikes, Lucas' and Kirbies were in abundance.

Well this was my observation of how it went down, if i got anything wrong, sorry, if i was harsh, sorry.

That pretty much sums it up. feel free to correct me on anything.

There was one wolf i saw in the prelims, who should have won, but sonic picked up a smash ball. There may have been a falco, and i'm quite sure there were no foxes at all.

A lot of characters weren't used. I didn't see a pikachu, luigi, diddy, donkey kong, peach, ice climber, bowser, toon link, rob, olimar, dedede or jiggly played with. Most surprisingly only one metaknight and snake. (all the characters were unlocked btw).

But yeah, it was pretty backwards. >.<

ahh yes, i do remember you, chump, and i remember saying Iso was gonna win, i went by Jp and played as Ike, got ganged in the secondaries.
There was 1 Rob, and plenty of Toon Links, if i remember correctly.
In the prelims when i picked up my second smash ball and swept up Zelda and someone else, a few guys in the crowd chanted "WE LIKE IKE!", talk about an awesome ego boost.
Then in the seconds., i remember some others saying stuff like "ikes gonna win" "ike's got it" and "ikes the best" so that was cool too, but then unfortunatly got killed.

pft @ Iso :p

Cool, cool, i think it would of been much better if it was organized by people who had played the game before, it was advertised as "super mario smash brothers brawl". I still found it fun, was cool to see the quality of some other Sydney smashers.

yeah, they didnt seem too organised did they.
and everyone kept tag-whoring, people kept stealing my girlfriends "xSys" constantly, that was annoying, and alot of people were getting disqualified because everyone was crowded around the desk talking and yelling and they were just yelling names out, could barley hear them calling the names out...if that makes any sense at all. XD

haha, tag whoring. yeah, it was really loud, and they wouldn't pass around the sheet of when each persons match was, or have a duplicate at the main desk or pinned up. The only way to see when you were playing was to push your way through the crowd, face a giant speaker blaring in your ear and scream at the guy holding the list of match ups.

My prelim match ended up being a 1v1 (yay), because the 2 other people were disqualified for not showing up. At least the 3rd party controllers were half decent, unlike the ones at the melee booth, the Z-button didn't grab though, was impossible to throw away the super scope and firework gun -_-.

I'm going to *try* and organise the Brisbane iteration of the Brawl tourney better.

Hopefully.

Sydney's Animania staff have never been very receptive towards smashers, one year they outright refused Jaz, and threatened the police on them if they tried to set their equipment up.

yeah i heard that, its crap, i reckon' it'd get a fair few people showing up for the smash alone, so its more money for them, dunno why they'd refuse

Jeez, that's harsh about Jaz.

Good-luck Vyse, at the Sydney animania they really needed at least one more tv set up with brawl, a bunch of the other consoles/games were being neglected while the wii with brawl in it had at least 20 people crowding it at all times. Also it took about 2.5hours to get through the 80 participants in the competition. There was a lot of wasted space at the Sydney venue, imo.

Nothing wrong with an anime con being about the cosplay, but it would be nice if they let the people in the community who were more knowledgeable set up the games.

I'm sure they could get 4-5 tvs for brawl, set it to be 1v1, no items, 3 stock, neutral stages? Doesn't need to be full serious best of 3/5 with counterpicks, just have a level playing field.

But I can't really complain, I won. >.>

Overall it was fun. Great atmosphere, people, etc.

Thanks, although I reckon it could just as easily have gone to the other guy in the final, was down to the wire.

I got an animania medal that says Aug 2008 Sat smash 1st on the back and the tv logo on the front, and a $25 madman anime voucher. And some Intencity vouchers, but they're pretty useless to me, live too far away.

When i wrote my reply saying "wow that's harsh about Jaz", i just wanted Vyse to know i was responding to his message, i was just going to say"wow that's harsh", so yeah, i'm not familiar with him at all, haha. sorry if that caused confusion.

Not sure, but as I understand it, Brisbane's second Animania of the year is in September on the 20th, and is to be the last one.

EDIT:
Last of the year I mean >.<

The competition sounded very unorganise, especially since they didn't even bother to check their stupid rules anyway. Looks like someone should have turned off items before hand =P

Hmm, when I was wondering around I was wondering what was going on at the Brawl area, I thought there was some good match going on or something, because yeah it seemed quite cramp there...

You'd think they'd have another Brawl or Melee set up as well..seriously lol.

Oh and their controllers suck. Third party controllers for all gamecubes and ps2, cmon? >.> As well as no memory cards apparently.
____

Hmm, Enigmalik I'm assuming you saw me when I was playing a bit during friendlies =P Shame I've no idea what you or Isorropia look like though haha.
