Surround Sound on the Wii

Whats up everyone, I've got a question for those who know about hooking up stereo receivers and what not. Now I know a lot about media, but mainly video and I'm still a little new to the whole audio field. I just setup a stereo receiver, and I'm wondering how I can use surround sound with the Wii even though it only outputs sound through the standard red and white audio ports. I don't know about all the options on my receiver itself, but it has a little picture on the screen that shows which speakers are enabled. When I'm using my digital cable hooked up via optical, it says that all speakers, center, front, and back are all enabled, but when I use my Wii, it's only the front left and right speakers, and isn't surround sound. I'm confused, can anyone help?

The Wii uses Dolby Pro Logic II for "simulated 5.1 surround sound." If I'm not mistaken your audio receiver needs to be PLII enabled to get surround sound from the Wii. As far as doing that, I can't really help you because I don't know what you have. :(

All it should require is a few picking of options and possibly the use of certain audio inputs.

yea it definitely decodes that. i think the problem is that the wii audio is plugged into my tv and my tv audio out to my receiver and that my tv is downconverting it to stereo.

Yeah, using the TV audio out would kill it. You'll need a couple of audio extensions to plud the sound directly into your receiver.
