Aside from that bullcrap listing for a hypothetical reboot with a restriction of only 12 characters, I have done a similar challenge in the past. Very similar to SSB64 right down to have a similar character from a franchise already represented by the starting roster (Luigi in 64, Dark Pit in this one) and having a franchise represented by two different characters (Jigglypuff in 64, Ghirahim in this one).

You could also consider Prince Sable as the Ness equivalent of this roster, by coming from an obscure game hardly anyone remembers.

I decided not to go for a bigger roster simply to see what 12 characters people would pick. 12 can be harder to choose in representing Nintendo than 20-30. Considering Smash 64 started with 12 and this is a hypothetical reboot, I wanted to go back to the quantitative mentality of the developers ca. 1999.

Anyhoo, most of these rosters have interesting choices, despite the unavoidable lack of important characters. It's interesting to imagine "What-if" rosters, assuming the first Smash would be released today, with the same roster restrictions.

I wanted to include the 4 biggest Nintendo Heroes and their rivals. I didn't include any Pokemon or Kirby characters (even though I wanted Charizard and DeDeDe) because they are developed by hal and gamefreak and I thought it would be interesting to have a STRICTLY nintendo smash bros. (Although kirby deserves the spot more because hal makes smash bros and k. rool was made by RARE ). I added 5 characters yet to be playable in smash bros. (Ganon in his Demon King form) and included Star Fox and C. Falcon because they are very popular competitive characters. I wanted to include Little Mac but I'm not sure if he was originally a nintendo creation. The same with Shulk. Chibi-Robo wasn't originally a nintendo creation but nintendo took the game and made it what it is.

Agreed. I ended up changing my mind several times because of the limitations and trying to get a better spread of Nintendo's Biggest (or classic) franchises and toss in some hero/villain stuff in. It was fun to make though.

While my previous attempt at doing a roster like the OP states had some personal choices, this one will be a more realistic roster, considering the titles released recently.

Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby and Pikachu are the big 5 here. Pit and Little Mac as revived retro, while Takamaru is purely retro. Shulk, Chrom and Gen VI Pokémon for being recent characters. Ninten would replace Ness as the EarthBound rep.
