Character Bios
Codename: Tabula Rasa
Real name: Ishmael Finn
Powers: http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Literary_Manipulation
Rasa has the power to manipulate books in several ways. He can physically move them around and tear out pages when he is close enough (within 100 feet or so). He is also able to manipulate the text of books, being able to pull words off of the page and project them onto whatever surface he likes. Rasa can use this effect to some extent to disorient villains; the text can actually be used as a smokescreen.
Equipment: He carries around some heavy books such as dictionaries and encyclopedias that can be used quite effectively as bludgeoning weapons. He also carries books of different languages, enabling him to communicate with people of all nationalities. Another important kind of book he keeps is a blank one to print words onto.
Appearance: The oldest of the team, Rasa is in his seventies and is balding with only wisps of thin, white hair still on his head. He is often dressed in a scholarly and semi-formal manner, often wearing suit coats, ties, and vests. He wears a monocle and carries a pocket watch with him at all times. Thin and slight, Rasa stands at only 5’2” or so and weighs roughly 110 pounds.
Character backstory: Finn had grown up in a lower class family in rural Iowa. He never knew his mother, and his father never talked about her. Finn had always enjoyed books. They were the only joy his father could buy him. He was so much into reading that he had to be coerced to put down a book and play with his friends. That is, the few friends he made in the small amount of time he wasn’t reading. Yet his father never seemed to mind Finn’s literary obsession. “It runs in the family”, he always said. Finn had always felt a special… connection to books. He almost felt as if he could, somehow, communicate with them.
-----One day, at age 18, Finn was tending to his father, who was frail and in ill health. Finn’s father had asked to sleep by his bookcase, as it entertained and comforted him. “Ishmael, my son,” he said one day, “That book on the top shelf… do you see it? Could you grab it for me?” He smiled, wearing an odd expression that Ishmael couldn’t quite put his finger on. Ishmael tried and tried to reach the book, but it was too high for him. He was irate. All that his poor father wanted was to read a book, and this useless, scrawny body couldn’t reach! He was almost seething with rage when something seemed to… click, and suddenly all the books flew off the shelves, landing on his father. Finn’s father died instantly. Finn was horribly anguished, and realizing his super power, delved completely into his literary studies.
Codename: Vigil
Real Name: Edward Y. Elliot
Powers: http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Precognition
Vigil doesn’t “see” the future, per se. He feels it. Vigil’s powers are not so powerful that you can ask him when an event will happen or something of that nature. Rather, he perceives the short-term outcome of events as they happen (or if they have recently happened). He gets overcome by an extremely strong emotion and can use this feeling to determine what will happen. For instance, take an example where he sees a car drive by. Vigil may be overcome with a horribly powerful sense of sadness just seconds later, and he will know that the car will soon crash.
Equipment: Vigil, being deeply religious, carries a crucifix with him always. Sometimes, the cross can aid him in interpreting his emotions. He feels a strange sense of calmness when looking at the cross.
Appearance: Vigil’s dangerous power has worn down on him. Only in his lower 20s, he looks at least 15-20 years older, with pronounced lines on his forehead and ruffled hair. Though 6’3”, Vigil is often hunched over. He is stick-skinny. The knowledge of future events is scary and powerful, and he is often seen murmuring to himself. That is, when he’s paying attention. He’s often distracted, or looking off into space.
Character bakcstory: As a child, Ed was the epitome of social-awkwardness. He was often picked on for his stick-like shape, but more often because of his bizarre behavior. Ever since he was a baby, Ed had been prone to wild swings in emotion followed by long periods of silence and contemplation. He always received horrible grades in school and was eventually kicked out due to insubordination and emotional instability.
-----Ed struck out on his own, running away from home at the age of 18 in search of some way to calm himself. He was unable to find a way, and, after months of failure, set out towards the wilderness, away from civilization. He could not live with humans. On his way out, he came across a dropped bible and crucifix. While examining these curious objects, he was overcome with a profound feeling of happiness and, most importantly, calmness. For the next couple of days, Ed stayed out in the wilderness, studying his bible. After a while, he concluded that, by keeping his powers under control, he could use them to serve humanity. And so, at age 20, he returned to civilization.
Codename: Ultra-Violet
Real Name: Violet McClean
Powers: http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/X-Ray_Vision
Violet has the power to see through most solid objects. She can use this ability to track foes and diagnose injured or sick people. She can trace bodily functions and locate physical (including internal) damage. This ability gives her unique capabilities as a medic and scout.
Equipment: Violet carries around basic medical supplies such as first-aid kits, vaccines, etc. Ironically, Violet has poor regular vision, so she always wears her eyeglasses as well.
Appearance: Violet is an average-sized female at about the age of 19. She is a natural redhead with gray-green eyes, and is known for her beauty. She is not very dressy though, and mainly wears jeans and t-shirts.
Character backstory: Violet grew up in a wealthy and prominent family in Beverly Hills, California. A natural leader, she was always popular amongst her peers and was very intelligent. She had always wanted to be a doctor, and was accepted into Johns Hopkins University to follow her dreams. However, once she got to the university, her personality became to rapidly deteriorate.
-----She started off the year as usual, very popular and with perfect grades. However, as she thought more and more about her field of study, she started to notice… visions. She would look at people and get this sense as if she actually seen inside of them. She didn’t know when this power would happen, and it deeply bothered her. She was bothered so much that she had to drop out of school. Deeply unsettled by her newfound power, she set out on her own to figure out what it was. Eventually learning that she had x-ray vision, Violet honed the skill until she could control it. She knew that this power would be perfect for her profession, but she felt that she could put her ability to better use than school. She was rejuvenated and ambitious; she wanted to do great things.
Codename: Flint
Real name: Cole Burns
Powers: http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Pyric_Exhalation
Flint can breathe flames, but he can be damaged by them as well. These flames can be used to ignite other flammable objects. A utility use is to use the flames to light the way in a dark area.
Equipment: Flint doesn’t really need a whole lot of equipment, since he generates his own flames. However, he will often carry around useful flammable objects such as wood (fire-spreading, torches) and gasoline (fire-spreading).
Appearance: Cole is a massive man in his mid 40s. He stands roughly at 6’7” and weighs over 250 pounds. He has disheveled and dirty salt and pepper hear. Cole shaves poorly, so he often has short, grizzled facial hair. He is a former wrestler and looks almost like a bear.
Character backstory: From a very young age, Cole was a bully who was reckless, easily angered, and made poor decisions. He was suspended frequently for getting in fights (and always winning) in addition to yelling at teachers, skipping classes, and brining drugs and weapons to school. Barely graduating from high school, he attended a community college where he would meet his future wife.
----- Cole’s breath had always been pone of his most notable attributes. People told him it smelled awful. He also had the unique ability to never fail a breathalyzer test when driving drunk, a strange fact indeed. His burning rage almost felt like it was carried by the very air that he exhaled. One day, after getting drunk once again, his wife left him, wanting to move on to a better man. Drunk and in a particularly furious rage, he went throughout his house smashing and breaking things. He was so drunk and caught up in his rage that it took him a while to realize his house was burning down. Realizing his power, he began to control it so that he could access it regardless of emotion, and, in the process, calmed himself down. Though still sometimes prone to angry outbursts, he strives to remain calm as much as possible.
Codename: ACDC
Real Name: Thomas Cox
Powers: http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Electrical_Transportation
ACDC can travel through electrical circuits and devices. He also has the ability to effect computer files and access special data. He is the perfect hacker and can get to any place with an outlet within seconds or even less.
Equipment: ACDC doesn’t particularly need equipment of his own. He really utilizes his surroundings, i.e. electrical outlets, data on computers, etc.
Appearance: ACDC is your typical nerd-looking guy. He’s a skinny white guy in his 30s with a lot of acne and a pair of glasses. He can often be seen fiddling with some electronic device such as computers and cell phones. He wears mostly khaki pants and dark colored t-shirts.
Character backstory: Cox grew up in a middle class family in downtown New York. Though not “popular” by the word’s conventional meaning at school, he was popular among his crowd of fellow tech enthusiasts. He always had a natural talent and affinity for electrical devices. Even as a small child he would tinker with them for hours on end. Electrical engineering had always been his interest in school.
-----One day, while typing up an essay on a computer, he felt a strange power coursing through him. He looked at the electrical socket and felt a strange urge to put his hand to it. He felt so compelled that he had to do it that he ignored all common sense and did just that. What he felt next was a strange, impossible-to-describe warping sensation. Soon enough, he realized he was moving through the electrical current! Not sure what to do or how to get out, Cox spent the next 5 or so years of his life in the cyberworld, figuring out his powers and traveling through all sorts of devices. Emerging years later out of a socket in the Netherlands, Cox was already prepared to be a superhero.
BIG BAD
Codename: Incubus
Real name: Skip Noir
Powers: http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Void_Pocketing
Incubus can travel into a “void” to escape combat. Essentially, he phases to another dimension. He can also drag people into the void with him, and with the lack of gravity and oxygen, people other than the user will die.
Equipment: Incubus carries a grappling hook to latch on to foes in order to drag them into the void. He wears dark clothes in order to camouflage more.
Appearance: Incubus is a man of about 50 years of age. His hair and eyes are obsidian black, yet his skin is pale. Incubus, a longtime vampire aficionado, Incubus dresses much like them, with old-looking semi-formal dress clothes on and a black cape. He is skinny and physically weak, and carries around a long, black cane to walk. He is not very large; he is maybe 5’7” and 120 pounds.
Character backstory: Skip, like many evil villains, had a terrible childhood. His parents were both loving and caring, and were the only ones that loved him, but they had both died by the time he was 5. Skip was very autistic, and would barely acknowledge when others spoke. However, as the orphanage workers brought him up, it became obvious that he was a savant of some sort. But they couldn’t quite put their finger on what his talent was…Skip was constantly picked on in school, not only for his shyness but also because of his odd name and bizarre manner or dress. In fact, just about everything students are commonly picked on about was a trait of Skip’s. In one particular incident, a bully tripped him as he was leaving the lunch line, splattering his lunch all over his face and spraining his arm as he tried to brace the fall. He remembered be laughed at, and just wanting to get away soooo bad… And somehow, he did.
-----The void was a comfortable place for him. Nobody bothering him or laughing at him. He didn’t need anyone or anything other than himself. And so he stayed there for years and years. And then people started turning up dead. Skip had figured out how to bring people into the void to kill them, and one by one, he flawlessly murdered his former bullies. The killer could never be found; it was as if he had just… vanished. But Skip resolved to continue the killings. The world was a cesspool breeding only hatred and suffering, and it didn’t deserve to exist, he reasoned.
The Outkasts: Justification
-----They were all misfits. None of them had a place in society. They all thought they were unique, lone warriors on a quest to save the world. Then they started meeting each other. First it was Violet and Flint. Then ACDC joined, followed by Rasa and then Vigil. They formed a band of unwanted and eclectic superheros. They became… the Outkasts.
-----The Outkasts spent most of their early years hunting out common criminals, and they were very effective. Nobody escaped their crime-fighting prowess. They worked as a team, using Rasa and Flint for offense and utility, Violet and ACDC for discovering concealed information, Violet for healing, and Vigil for insight into the events, essentially the detective of the group. Yet there was soon a string of murders occurring in the town where a boy had, according to eyewitnesses, simply vanished. The murders were becoming more and more frequent and the Outkasts simply couldn’t figure out who was pulling off the crimes so easily. Yet Vigil had a sense that this was no normal criminal, and he shuddered and trembled whenever the story of the vanishing was brought up. The vast majority of people passed it off as an urban legend, but this band of heroes knew of Vigil’s abilities. They decided to launch an investigation, heading into the school at night.
-----ACDC was sent through the electrical wires to look into school computer files while the other members guarded the door. ACDC used the computer to unlock a nearby safe containing what was allegedly the kid’s diary. But the diary had a lock on it, and ACDC was stuck. Rasa extracted the words, printing them on a blank book he carried. They all read the diary of Skip Noir that night, how he had suffered and wanted to be alone. How he had become a villain to cleanse the world. All the pieces were dropping into place, and the Outkasts knew what they needed to do.
-----The next day, the crew walked through the town, letting Vigil feel out who might be the next victim. He was eventually struck by a horrible wave of anguish next to a thuggish-looking man. This was most likely a bully of Skip, and was a logical target for him to go after. They quietly and carefully followed the man to his home and recorded the address, wating for the nighttime. They waited and waited, and, at about midnight, a man stepped out of seemingly nothing in front of the house.
-----Flint, eager to take the first action, leapt out and began exhaling flames at Incubus. Incubus, not expecting the attack, was caught on fire, screaming in pain as he burned. He tried and tried to escape into the void, but couldn’t concentrate. Just then, he was being clobbered by an onslaught of… books? An encyclopedia rammed into his head, rendering him unconscious. Flint ran towards him, eager to finish him off, as he burned Incubus one last time, Incubus’ eyes suddenly opened, and, with the strongest will he could conjure, dragged Flint into the void.
-----The Outkasts were devastated. The murders had stopped, but they had no idea whether Flint (or Incubus, for that matter) was alive. They continued busting regular criminals, but were not as effective or efficient without one of their most important offensive attackers. Vigil, normally calm under the influence of his religion, felt consistently sad, making it harder for him to receive and interpret other emotions. Rasa, without anyone to help him out on the attacking side, was much less effective. Everyone in the Outkasts was an important part of the machine and affected every other part. The group was simply less effective without one of their members.
-----Worse still, similar murders began popping up again. Whether this is Incubus or another void-stepper is unknown to this day. Nobody really knows whether Incubus, one of the worst criminals in the history of the earth, survived. He had been burnt and battered, but the battery was unlikely to have caused death and the fire would have been put out in the air-less void.
-----One day, suddenly, Vigil’s mood changed. He was happy for once; ecstatic, in fact. He was interested in the morning paper. Nothing of interest seemed to be on the front page… the war, the economy, etc. But as they flipped to the next page, they were greeted by a familiar face and the headline “Giant man arrested on drug charges in New York”. And, after travelling to the big city and laying down bail, the Outkasts were united once again. A crime fighting force for the ages, they have been successful ever since.
