Consider adventure mode in melee:
Any character could be selected and would go through the same series of stages and transit areas, fighting the same people.
Think about what we know of the emissary:
-"The protagonists form teams based on the developments in the story, and the characters they encounter join their team."
Seems as though you have a few people to choose from at the start, then you save either zelda or peach, who becomes part of your team. Pit sees an explosion in his basin (functioning as a crystal ball) and decides to help the heroes. From there on you probably fight against metaknight at one point
Point being: I don't think the SSE will be an adventure mode for every character like in SSBM, it will be closer to a singular story mode which gives you a bit of many characters.
