Stat mods might have a use (maybe)

So here are my thoughts on stat mods. Keep in mind this is all speculation and something of this nature would need quite a bit of testing, and relies on the assumption that we can freely edit stats without some complicated process, and that the editing is not broken in some way.

I feel like stat mods, if implemented correctly in the game, could actually be a positive thing for the competitive community. There are two ways this could be:

1) Balance weak characters
2) Increase speed of gameplay

1) Balance weak characters

If there is a way to save stat modification in some sort of "gametype" then it maybe be possible to balance out the characters of the game so that a wider variety of characters are usable.

Essentially, imagine that you can boost the speed of character X who is low tier because of their lack of speed. Then you can save this change (along with any other character balance changes) to a preset gametype that tournament officials can distribute online. This would allow the competitive community to craft a more balanced roster where more of the cast can be used. The same can be done if say character Y has speed, but has trouble KOing other characters. You can boost their attack to move them out of the lower tiers.

The idea is that you could make a balanced character roster similar to the concept of project M (except obviously less customizable) without the need of modifying the game. Essentially it would be a simple buff of weak characters to make them more viable.

2) Increase the speed of gameplay

Since we have the ability to increase speed, we might just literally do that. Like the previous idea, but simpler, we can boost the speed of characters so that there is a higher skill cap. I doubt this one would work well because the speed buffs could end up being too much, or it might not be reasonable to boost speeds without someone trying to boost their character's speed too high in order to have an unfair advantage.

Also, a straight speed buff could also make running away easier, so it could easily backfire to having the opposite of the desired effect.

Both ideas rely on the ability to make the modifications consistent and reasonable to enforce at tournaments. Here I highly doubt they will actually give us the tools to do that. I doubt there will be any way to save a certain setup and distribute it among everybody. However IF it is possible, would you guys as a community be willing to try this? Or would you rather go the traditional route and try to play the game as default as possible?

Either way, just food for thought.

I don't think straight up speed increase will do much to be honest. All it will do is increase run speed. Things like hitstun, landing lag, and other things that affect the pace of the game won't be affected. And another reason for the slow feel of brawl came from the low gravity rather than the horizontal speed, which won't be affected either. I can't really see this as a potential remedy to the potential feel of smash 4. That being said, I do have faith that smash 4 won't need any of this regardless.

You realize Brawl ( and Melee iirc) gave players the power to buff weak characters if they wanted to already, right? Handicap %s. Coulda given Ganon a 10% edge on everyone, as an example, but ultimately the major constructivist attitude that would have required was not pervasive in the community.

A discussion about buffing weak characters has much more to do with getting the smash community willing to do so rather than what particular methods happen to be available.

If stat mods are randomized, then no they are not allowed, if we can control them and improve characters, we can buff characters as needed without patching which is awesome

The problem being that people will never agree on how to balance the characters. It'll just be chaos if we tried.
