Starting matches in crew battles

When a player needs to come in a match with less stocks than the opponent, traditionally they suicide at the beginning of the match to reach their appropriate stock count, and a countdown is made out loud and they go at it.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just play the match from the start, then quit after they've lost their allotted amount of stocks? They both get truly equal start at the time of the match, with one person not jumping the gun. There are also little things like scumbag Peaches who try to pull a turnip early, though that's usually not an issue.

The only disadvantage I can think of is that there's no hype "Game!" moment when one person loses all their stocks.

If you did it that way, then how would one go about determining something like the following example:

Player A has 1 stock. Player B has 4 stocks. Using your idea, they both start at 4, but Player A in reality only has 1 stock. Player A and B fight and they both lose their first stock nearly at the same time, but no one could really tell who died first.
Then what?

Going about it the way that it's already designed is the most simplistic way to handle crews.

They should just pause the game, do the countdown ("3, 2, 1, GO!/QUIT LIFE!"), and unpause right at GO! and both players can act as soon as possible.

This is not a bad idea. Though it takes a while, the system in my mind:

three players start the game, one of them a TO
TO suicides all four stocks
necessary other suicides happen
people take up a decided starting configuration
TO pauses, countdown, unpauses at GO!
crew battle ensues.

Having only one stock icon on the screen really reminds people to play like it's their last stock, imo... generating more hype (which is what crews is all about)

I agree, but not only about the hype of the last stock. For me personally, when I see that I'm on my final stock, I subconsciously tend to have more of a heightened awareness of my surroundings and actions in an effort to cling on and survive. It wouldn't have the same feel otherwise.

Can you stil pause with no stocks left? Though if not, the TO could pause just before he loses his last stock.

Pretty sure you can't. You can pause when a CPU is playing in the same port that you're plugged into though. :D
