Starting a SIMPLE Luigi-Only Ladder

Since the SWF Friend Finder is offline ATM, I was thinking we could start a SIMPLE Luigi-Only Ladder for this forum. The reason it would be called a SIMPLE Luigi Ladder is because the rules and point system would be kept as simple as possible. I've always wanted to fight against you guys and see how my Luigi stacks up against yours; and I believe a lot of you wonder the same thing. I still have to iron out a few things but this would be the jist of it:

  1. Create a "Rules and Sign-Up" thread where we also ensure we've exchanged Brawl Friend Codes and to check who's online.
  2. Create the official SIMPLE Luigi Ladder thread once the Ladder starts where wins and points will be reported and kept track of.

The Rules would be pretty simple:
  • Luigi Only. If either player is not using Luigi, then it is not part of this ladder.
  • Contestants are ranked on a simple point system and start with 0 points.
  • Each contestant is in charge of finding and challenging another contestant.
  • Contestants can challenge any other contestant except the last one they played.
  • Stock, Stages, and Items are up to the players. Anything goes.
  • Each match is a Best 2 of 3.
  • If the winner of the Best 2 of 3 continues playing after winning, he's extending the match to Best 3 of 5.
  • The winner of the match must report his win against the opponent to earn 5 points.
  • The SIMPLE Luigi Ladder ends in a week and there can be ties.

It'd be a nice way to liven the forum up at the very least. Let me know if you have any suggestions or questions.

I'm all for it. However, I'm absolutely godawful online. The button lag frustrates me and I end up just playing computers instead.

But I'd definetly jump online for this. I'll even buy one of those stupid lan adapters. I'll play anyone any time I have time (usually late at night), even though you'll beat the crud out of me (at first at least).

Question though, how are we going to know who's online and available? Does this message board system have that feature?

There shouldn't be noticable lag from KY to CA or similar distances. If there is, we need to fool around with your router and Wii settings. I might be able to help you set up a static IP for your Wii and open up some ports on your router to drastically reduce your lag.

If you look below a poster's name and avatar where the Luigi icon is, there is an Online Icon (looks like a Smash Ball). If the icon is lit up, the poster is online (or was just a few moments ago); if it is grey, the poster is not online. In the signup thread, everyone in the Ladder will have posted on it, and a quick check of those Online Icons can tell you who's online.

I don't suck online, but I do suck against other Luigis. It'd be interesting to play the people who've made combo videos, and see how much poonage I get handed by them.

Awesome, I hadn't thought of being able to use the boards to check status like that.

Also, when I say lag I'm not referring to the slow-down BS that you get in all the "with anyone" games, even though that would be a problem. I just can't ever seem to find a game that doesn't take like half a second to do an attack after you execute it. It really throws my game off, since I rely so heavily on my reflexes. Can that be rid of too? If so that would own.

And yeah, lan help would be great. I'm as computer literate as you'd ever want someone to be, but I just never dove into networking.

Do you have a wireless router or a USB WiFi adapter?
Is the router a Linksys router ('cause if so, I'm SURE i can help you get a better connection) or some other router?

The jist of what we have to do is:
Find your internal IP addresses and DNS servers.
Go into your router settings and find the DHCP.
Go into your Wii settings and set a static IP lower than what your DHCP assigns.
Go into your router settings again and open the correct ports to your Wii's static IP.
Done.

I've played people in Florida lag free.

EDIT: Oh, and when I say lag, I am talking about the latency that you're referring to.

I actually use a Buffalo router with a custom firmware flash (ddWRT), but that sounds simple enough that I can do it on my own. That is, assuming setting wii on static is easy. Thanks for the tips.

Yeah, it won't prove anything. And I'm cool with that, because as long as it gets us playing it's all good. I can also see why you would want some sort of difinitive tournament. The problem with that, is that things might get too complex as far as Rules, Points, and Scheduling or setting up matches.

If tournaments are videogames, I'd consider the SIMPLE Luigi-Only Ladder like Tetris; just pick up and play. I imagine myself creating a room and waiting for someone else to check if anyone has a room open, and then just playing.

I'm open to ideas as long as it's kept SIMPLE.

I'll do this too, but we need to be on the same ports and figure out ways to maximize online connectivity amongst each other.

Sounds good.

For anyone who wants to do as ALiAs, cr4sh, and myself, these are the basics:

Everything connected to your router (like PS3, PSPs, printers, and the PC you're on right now) has an internal IP address to be able to communicate with each other and the router itself. Your router's DHCP is in charge of assigning individual IP addresses to each system that connects to it. But it only has max 255 numbers to give out (the router itself already using 0 or 1), so it recycles them often. This means every time you turn your Wii back on, it has a different IP address. You can go into your Wii settings and manually give it an IP address yourself, but if your router assigns that same number for something else, it will become confused.

We can get into the routers settings and tell the DHCP to only assign numbers in a certain range only... so for example from 100 to 255. Then we can safely give the Wii, for example, the number 10. This way, we can be sure that the DHCP on the router will not give anything else the same number because it can't assign numbers that low.

Once we change the range on the DHCP and manually set a statice IP on the Wii, we can go ahead and forward ports for the Wii's static IP address. It's like opening certain doors to your Wii so that data doesn't have to go the long way. This is also in the router's settings. Nintendo has told us what ports are needed open so it's just a matter of typing them in. Another thing we can do (if your router allows it) is DMZ (Demilitarazied Zone) the entire IP address... which is like opening ALL the doors on the Wii. It's not safe to make your PC a DMZ, but the Wii isn't sensitive to, nor a target for, hackers. It's tons easier if your router supports it.

Once this is done, your Wii is optimized for online play. But Brawl doesn't deal with servers, it deals with the other players' Wiis directly... so for a really good connection, the people you're playing against should forward their Wiis ports too.

If you want to do this stuff yourself, visit PortForward.com and search for your Router. Else, I might be able to help.

Good mini guide, though emphasis on the DMZ, as to not make your PC a playground for hackers. Thank God the Wii can't be hacked xD.

Lol, that guide made me feel like a kindergartener. "ok, what WE need to do is this, and WE can have just a wonderful time!" Certainly useful though! :chuckle:

Neither could the CRAY, if someone wants to hack you, they're going to hack you. The only apprehension I have about DMZ is local wireless, and (though highly unlikely and probably very difficult) intrusion. Basically, if there's a way to use a DMZ'd i.p. (such as on a laptop, over wireless) to gain access to my home network, which would be no good.

Edit: 5 minutes of DMZ research definitely assuaged me. Seems as though it would be harder, even, to gain access to a network by way of a DMZ'd machine (of any type), than even attacking the network directly.

Just in case you were wondering what I found out. A DMZ acts as a subnetwork where the machine in question accesses the outside network (i.e. the internet) directly. The other computers on the network access it through the network behind the firewall. As a consequence, the computer in the DMZ cannot communicate with the ones in the general network through said network.

TLDR version. Imagine you had a castle, with a town and walls. A DMZ is like building a house outside of the walls entirely.

Perfect.

The Wii would have complete unfirewalled access to and from the internets (a series of tubes); but it's OK 'cause it's a Wii and not your PC or Laptop.

Back on the SIMPLE Luigi-Only Ladder, the Official thread would have the ranking look something like this:

1. 25 coins - elheber "WiiGi" - Last Match: Lost against chic
2. 20 coins - chic "chic" - Last Match: Won against elheber
2. 20 conis - PolMex23 "PM23" - Last Match: Won against chic
3. 10 coins - cr4sh "cr4sh" - Last Match: Lost against ALiAsVee
etc.

It's Rank. Points - Name "Tag" - Last Match: Result against Opponent
I'm wondering if there's any way to hotlink some sort of "online icon" next to the name. That'd make seeing if anyone's online much easier than checking their posts.

Okidokes, if there's nothing else I'll get on with the SIMPLE Luigi Ladder (i thought i'd simplify the name, seeing as how "simple" is part of the theme).

Well if what you say works Elheber, I might consider joining the ladder, either way I believe there is some info there so if you could just PM me a more in depth guide I would definitely take the time to optimize my wii to see if I can join the ladder.
