I am new to Marth and have been working on his down+A spike off the side of stage for a while now. It has been working pretty well for killing opponents however on the down side I usually die about 1 second later after fast falling right above my opposition.. Is there a technique I am missing here or does it just take more practice? I do try of course to rebound up but it seems like I always get stuck in a fast fall down and by the time the down+a animation is over it's too late to recover. (I have done it successfully a number of times but I can't seem to tell what I'm doing differently between the successes and failures). Any help is appreciated.

I used to have the exact same problem. Whenever I tried to get a meteor smash, I would accidentally fast-fall to my death. My solution (since I never thought of using the c-stick) was to use my first jump to get off the stage and above my opponent, then use my second jump to get back towards the stage. Immediately after using my second jump, I would use my down-air. So basically, jump right before using your down-air.

This has worked pretty well for me, and has a couple of advantages over the c-stick method. The extra bit of height you gain from the second jump helps space you correctly so that Marth hits with the tip of his sword. If on the other hand, you accidentally get too close to your opponent in the air to properly meteor smash, the second jump can trigger a foot-stool jump.

However, it may just be easier to use the c-stick.

Thanks for the tips. I have noticed that if you spike during the upward momentum of your jump then it's not a problem however it's more difficult to make the perfect hit. I will try the c- stick idea as well.

On a separate topic, does anyone ever setup any Marth ditto matches via this forum?

You can use the c-stick rather than down+a so you don't fast fall.
That isn't true, unless you use Tilts (A) in your C-stick configuration.
You can't Fast Fall until you reach the peak of your jump.

To prevent Fast Falling, two options:

A) Dair with upward momentum (Jump -> Dair).
B) Hold down in the Control Stick before doing the Dair (you can do that more easily with a 1/4 down in the Control Stick)

He's right or u could also try running towards the edge using your jump and a b-air then using your second jump to spike with the last hitbox of the spike (the back end of the attack) not to mention the wider range of space + mindgames lol this also gives you a little more momentum when using this technique
