For some reason I'm having a hard time with good Sonic players. He's just an all around annoying character to face. Whenever he rolls into my sheild, i can never sheild grab him. I usually play him online, so maybe it's the half-second delay? Anyway, it's still frustrating as h3ll. I've looked through most of the guides in this section, (especially Thor's "Only the Good Stuff"). And as thorough as they are, I still feel unsure as to how to approach Sonic. I'm sorry if there are any in-depth strats on this that I've missed. Any help with handling Sonic would be greatly appreciated.

I've never played a good Sonic. Only the ones on "with anyone". What I do is mostly use my tilts to stop him from rushing me. Pulling a 'nade and shielding it works well when he is doing his dash attack. Once Sonic has stopped moving and is close to Snake you're fine, and can start overpowering him. Sonic as you know relies on his speed to aggravate you, and he does a good job of it. Sonic needs to be the one approaching. He does not like to be put on the defensive and that's where you need to keep him. Hope I helped.

Oh man good Sonics + online lag are pretty frustrating. He'll rely on combo-ing you aerially for the most part, and his finishing moves are usually fsmash, dsmash, or a spindash->uair->spring->uair/bair (it works very well against a heavy faller like Snake).

So, he will often use the spindash attack to launch you for those aerial combos and rack up damage. However, Snake has the exact tools to ruin his spindash game. This includes shield dropping grenades very often (he'll just explode on contact with them) and obviously proxy and C4 (C4 not so much though, you'll rarely catch him mid-run but it still works as a surprise). Mortars/Mortar sliding back and forth also work well. This should throw off his flow, and you can move in for the kill.

Sonic relies on his speed to run circles around you, but Snake is an expert at reducing the opponents mobility. Without his combo starters, it will be difficult for him to rack up much damage, and his other attacks are relatively weak. Watch out for his quick dtilt/ftilt/jab though. Often, a constricted sonic is as good as dead contending with your powerful tilts.

So in short, avoid the air, limit his movement, and overpower him.

For me a claymore can really put the brakes on Sonic sometimes. Also shield dropped grenades work against Sonic's speed to stop him. Pretty everything Rusty said.
