Fsmashing while holding a throwing item. This was possible in brawl as well, and its one of the things that carried over. i NEVER see anyone make an attempt at this at all other than a few other link players. with more characters having the ability to spawn throwing items, I feel like people should learn this. Not only for those that have throwing items though either, it should be something to learn in matchups AGAINST those with em. Its great for throwing people off as a mindgame tool as no one ever expects it.

with a gcn controller; link/toonlink/peach, soon as you are in the animation for pulling the item out, hold the A button. Keep it held and you won't throw the item, now use the C-stick to Fsmash(only works with Fsmash) you'll do the forward smash instead of throwing the item, can catch opponents offguard who thought you were going to throw the turnip/bomb.

All other characters like diddy rob etc., (or if you as link/tlink/peach didn't hold it during the original animation) grab the item you spawned(or if the opponent spawned it), then perform a roll(i'm sure other moves can do it, but I find rolling to be the easiest) during the roll animation, hold the A button, rest is the same as before, just keep the Abutton held and use the c-stick to perform the smash.

Obviously don't get too predictable and use this way to much as opponents will come to expect it, still I feel like its something more players should try to work into their games if they can spawn throwing items or if you're against someone who can.

Just tested this out. Pretty cool, but the fact that it only works with F-Smash is kind of limiting. Combined with f-tilt while holding an item (c-stick while crouching), it could be used for some great mix-ups.

I'm going to have to set one of the shoulder buttons to attack if I want to do this in a real match, though.

Note that you can also use a spot-dodge or an air-dodge, or the end-lag of pretty much any move to press the attack button down, in addition to rolls/initial pull-out. You will have to release the attack button when you want to release the smash, otherwise it will charge to full. You can use the end-lag of the smash attack to re-press the attack button.

Shame you have to use the C-stick as I have it set to tilts, but may have to change that.

Like bigjoe just said, when used with tilts this could make for some delicious mix ups, especially with diddy thanks to the opponent expecting side b's when you have the banana in hand

Cheers for pointing this out, I'm gonna go practice in a bit.

Just gave it a try with Diddy, you dont have to roll after picking up the banana for it to work, just pick the banana up like normal (in the air or on ground) and keep holding the a button. Also after using c stick to smash release a to stop the charging animation.

Again thanks for pointing this out, going to improve my diddy game quite a bit!

Edit: didn't realise I was the last poster in this thread, sorry for double posting.

long as it has the second analog stick it'll work.(this means its completely and totally impossible on 3DS) Only problem is, with the gamepad for instance, said second analog stick isn't in the most logical of places.

It should work with the pro, I've not used the Wii U pro at all so I have no idea how good/easy to perform it is with it, gcn controller its pretty easy to do it with in the heat of battle.

If you want to fsmash and you're already holding an item you just need to press and hold the A button during a spot dodge.

It does. The way I do it is hold A with my thumb and hit the stick with my index finger. Sort of like clawing.

Thanks for the reminder, OP. I forgot about this, and I use Link a lot so it should be helpful. Might be useful with BJ too.
