I really, REALLY want to start watching Doctor Who.
Sadly, though, I've only seen DVDs of the first three seasons in stores, and these are worth R$99,99.

Hmm... On my Dr. Mario sprite project, I'm still deciding whether the viruses (in the playfield) should have 2, 3, or 4 animation frames (no more, no less). Help me out guys!

The project will include the following viruses:

Dr. Mario (colored & Game Boy)
Dr. Wario
Dr. Luigi
Green Virus (only seen in the official Dr. Mario board game)
Bad box art viruses :4megaman:
The viruses from "Virus" (the original name for the NES Dr. Mario prototype)
I want Dr. Pikachu.

I don't care that he has nothing to do with Mario.

Why is they're no Dr. Waluigi?
Nah, Waluigi is more into running boutiques and detective businesses. :p

All credit goes to captainaugust.

Well, if my GCN controller is fine, then all I need is a Wii U, a GCN adapter, and SSB4 Wii U... Yeah... That's like 300 - 350 USD. Why uni, why do you cost so much? Why must you torture me with so much work?

Says the guy with a Smash 4 Substitute avatar.

But at least I don't go around shoving it in people's face like it's the funniest joke on the planet. Much like how a child repeats the same joke expecting to get the same reaction as when he first said it. Which Mega Bidoof has done. Constantly.

Hi!

So, now, I;m going to post a huge wall (you might consider this an essay) because I just got a theory in my head that some people might be interested to read.

I will spoiler it, but the TL;DR of it is that I think the Paper Mario series until SPM are msotly based around retro video game sound design....mainly the 16 bit era.

If you are just not interested to hear it, don't open the spoiler....but I know some might.

Ok, so I got this idea by remembering this image I saw like a year ago:

Now, if you have like no idea what this is, just go there at 1:47

and there at like .....just listen for 6 seconds:

So, I actually never verified for that year that it was true, but I realised it was quickly due to my audio memory being....it's crazy what I can remember :)

But this lead me to ask why?

I mean this is odd after all....until I remembered that....it just might make all sense.

Now, this is when I quite need to expose the fact of the sound style of the series because there's a lot that made me think this. First, IS has proved and that's not just on that series that they love to do 16 bit music. If you played pushmo, that's obvious. TTYD and spm have really obvious 16 bit sounds oftenly beeps or just simple and clear sfx. If you want a very good example, take riddle tower from TTYD, it's obvious right at the beginning:

But there's a ton, spm underchomp, the bleck's castle, even the famicom startup. Altough, I want to remind you that I already made a theory that TTYD would have its main theme (and so, all its derivated) based on the famicom startup. Anyway, pm64, it's less obvious, but it's definetely there (I just don';t have clear examples, but I think you might feel the same now that I described that retro feel).

The reason I got this plugged is that would actually make sense to have such an old and obscure sfx to reflect that retro style.

Now, you might think that it';s not enough....but I realised that the most fundamental part of that style just corelates with all of this.

I said ONE thing several time about the series ost that I just couldn't deny: it has a really high amount of sfx that seems out of there that enahnce the feel of the music. But I didn't asked why....and if I assume that the retro influence was true....then it just fits all together.

See, this perfectly contrasts with orchestral. The sound is more complex making it more complicated, BUT it is far more flexible to express the feel. The thing with oklder games like the snes is that you just can't have these complex sounds and you mostly need to rely on either simple beeps or some really simplified instruments like that are very simple, but they are not flexible. What I mean is that the music of an snes would pretty much cater to a specific feel and can not go anywhere outside of it while the orchestral....it's just the opposite, but more complex. This creates a sounds style that has 2 main charecteristics:
  1. It is VERY simple to get because the sounds are so clever and can be as simple as a beep, while the nature like the speech would control the feel of the sounds
  2. It really is very restricted for the feel of the music with the low amount of sounds complexity available meaning it really has to have a lot of these simple sounds to cater to a specific feel and do it right.
Now, this is when I link the series ost....I think I missunderstood it.

I actually never loved THAT much the music because of the amount of weird sfx....but I did because of how much simplistic and clear they are. This even corelates with my visuals tastes of having bright, slight gradient and not much complex lines which I already told why TTYD and SPM matrched perfectly (pm64 would if it wasn';t for the limited brightness of the n64).

But if I realise this, this is EXACTLY matching the 16 bit artstyle that IS is really loving.

What I basically said is that the Paper Mario series has heavy influence on 16 bit era over its music because the style just seems to match.

EXCEPT in ONE case....yeah, that's sticker star, but honestly, the only thing this game has in common with the rest is the visual style....the rest has a party of different stuff.

SS....gues waht, features orchestral. THAT, is why i felt thsi game had an extremely odd ost for a Paper Mario game, because its style was doing the exact contrast of what it used to. Now, this isn't why I hate the ost, it has several other issues in its diversity and implementation, but it is why i felt very confused when I heard it. it's just is like the one different game that makes....questionable and weird decision about the sound style.

And lastly, there's some corelation you could put on the rest of the design. The only one I would mention because of how I made a fuss about it is the earthbound theory. I won't go over it, but the short version is that a lot of stuff from the series seems to have come from that game. I actually asked on the EB forum and basically, it's common for retro rpg....like JP one.

But does this all make sense to you considering IS made this game?

I mean, IS made FE which is the series they are most famous for....they do have that experience in retro style and in retro rpg. So, this could even make sense to see this on the Paper Mario series.

....ouf, that's a lot I know, but I just want to know what you think about this. To me, it's very funny to hear that one of the best ost I've ever heard is inspired by an era that I wasn't even born to live it....

....I just love to type long stuff :)
