So how do you add the border around your avatar? It would be nice to know as making transparent images that originally had a non-black background means a lot of extra work/they look weird against a white background in return.

Something similar happened to me: Once I got a Scraggy named "Nappy's Bae", had supposed 5IVs and Eggmoves but still I pressed the Release Button really hard with my stylus.

That's the only thing I use GIMP for.

Using the line tools the application gives you. I made the borders look similar to an image I found when I was doing that.
You may want to use curved lines too.

Based hotkeys and Undo / Redo buttons help a lot!

However, I'll have to admit that I don't use my Bamboo Capture much.

I can't draw things myself so I just use Paint to edit fanart and use the fill-in option to test avatars against a dark background before I send them into GIMP to make transparent. I often make sample posts afterwords to double check that things look correct.

This was probably my most ambitious project, as it took me several hours to complete (was suffering from Jet-lag coming back from Japan and had nothing else better to do):

Oh, so you trace it? That is pretty close to the original.

Last time I used Paint for icons was in mid-2011, so I'm back to being a noob in the application. Then again, I use Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI (for drawing) these days. The latest icon I made (which was made from scratch) is probably the best one I've made yet.

Trace? I edit it directly myself. Each time I edit a part (Ex. Skin/Eyes/Hair) I make a copy just in case I do something wrong.

Good to hear. Each time you push yourself you learn something in return.
