If they come in with a gun, and you happen to even disarm them and shoot them, you'd get imprisoned for manslaughter by reacting with excessive force.

Step 1: Alert Authorities.
Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the rights in your area for self-defense.
Step 3: Buy a knife made for combat, or a handgun/Shotgun. As said before, the cocking of a shotgun is the universal "GTFO MF!" sound.
Step 4: Practice and think about self-defense situations. What if they have guns? What will you do then? What if they come in while you're sleeping, what will you do then? What if they have knives, what will you do then? Thinking is key.
Step 5: Keep all doors locked and all windows shut. Buy an alarm if you're really worried.
Step 6: If steps 1-5 Fail, FIRE THE LAZAR!!!
Step 7: Don't be stupid and try step 6.
