Hi. So recently I watched smash melee for the first time because I was watching starcraft mlg streams and noticed smash bros and was curious. I had no idea it was so cool, I ended up watching more smash than starcraft even though I had no idea what the hell was happening or how the characters were moving so fast.

So then I went and dug out my like 10 year old gamecube and long and behold smash was still inside. I plugged it into an old fat tv and voila it turned on. It was missing a few colors (cord was all chewed up), but it played.

So pretty much I joined this website because I really didn't know this community existed and wanted to see if I could somehow join after seeing it played. Also I ran around in the game and pretty much ran off the ledge every time xD. It was super fun though. I'd like to play the game but don't know where to start.

The best place to start is here! Starting Smash. It takes a long long time to get as good as those guys you watched. Mang0, M2K all of those top guys have thousands of hours of practice in this game.

Anyways so glad to see new people joining! Make sure to hit the Melee boards and start doing research!

Welcome to Smashboards mumbles :)

Check out the guide Remo linked you to whenever you get the chance, just be sure to pace yourself. If you're interested in playing with human opponents (best way to get better), then visit the Regional Zones forum to see what's going and who's in your area.

Most importantly, have fun!

Not really. I only experience hand problems if I've been playing intensely for hours on hours. Otherwise, I'm always perfectly fine.

I normally play computer games so I guess I'm not used to the controller

Ah, I see. I rarely play games on the computer so I'm very used to the controller. Guess we're opposites when it comes to that :p

It's 4 days now and my thumb stopped being sore :). I'm trying to learn how to do the shffl and I can do the small jump, attack and fast fall but I have no idea when to shield to lag cancel or if I ever do it right. Is there a way to practice this shffl thing and know you did it right?

You'll know that you did it right if there's less lag after the aerial. Like, perform an aerial without L-Canceling, then try to do an action afterward. After that, perform an aerial and L-Cancel, then do an action after that. You'll notice a difference in how much lag was cut off.

Around right before you land is when you should be pressing your preferred shield button to L-Cancel. Not any earlier than that and not after you've already touched the ground.

Pretty sure that wasn't the best explanation, but I hope you get the idea.

Okay thanks! i'll keep trying. Is there any preferred character to learn this technique?

Personally, I think it's best to learn with whatever character(s) you'll be using the majority of the time since the timing varies with different moves anyway. You could practice with Fox though since he's a character most people practice learning how to short-hop with. Everything is quick with that character, so if you can learn how to SHFFL with him, you should be able to get the hang of doing it with anyone.

Okay I'll try fox out. Is there a section on the boards where I can ask newbie questions?

Depends on what the question pertains to. If it's a character specific question, it would go in the sub-forum for that character. If it's a general question, I'm sure you could ask it in general Melee discussion.

Be sure to look around to see if there are threads that might answer some of your questions before posting a thread though (like a FAQ thread, etc).
