So how do the stages look competitively.

In Brawl a lot of the stages had some gimmick to them, one that usually hurt. Made matches without interference from the stage near impossible to set up. I'm not a competitive guy but I hated the occasional cheap death.

Do the stages in the trailers look more balanced?

The trailer stages on the 3DS look party-oriented. Levels with giant books stacked on top of each other, giant spiked pillars destroying parts of the stage, and an obviously unbalanced Spirit Tracks level.

So far, every single stage on the Wii U version has followed the "stage + platforms + video game setting in background" thing that Smashville had going on. I'm sure they'll add more gimmicky stages for fun casual play but I don't think you have to worry about not having enough competitive stages.

In Dr. Wily Castle, there's a yellow giant thing that appeared at the end of the trailer. I going to assume that it's a stage hazard. Skyloft is pretty much similar to Delfino Plaza, but it'll still be an appropriate stage for competition. It's look like Wii Fit Room lacks lower blast line and looks too big. There might be an imbalance, but we don't know until more info is published.

I'm almost certain he'll be a boss just like he was in the original games. We're still getting an adventure mode, it just wont be like subspace.

I really like stage hazards even in the competitive stages

Obviously not ridiculous stuff flying all over but the occasional "oh damn" stage hazard never bothered me that much

I dunno, man. Could go either way with that one. It's just as likely that Yellow Devil is a stage hazard. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

I actually liked some of the imbalanced stages. Heck, I even liked Melee's poke floats. I was terrible at it, but it was fun.

I liked Brawl's stages but there were too many damage gimmicks for my liking.

One thing I will say, a lot of the stages currently shown seem to have walk off edges.

Stages that Look good competitive wise: Smashville, Skyloft, BF, Wily's Castle

Stages that might be good: The Arena

Stages that are iffy: Wii Fit Training area, 3DS stages

so far so good. also I'm getting the feeling more and more Arena will be the new FD.

The more neutral stages the better.
I hate Walk Off Stages as well as Scroll Stages..
I have no problem with moving stages like Delfino, though.

In the spirit of catering to both competitive and casual players, I think it would be a good idea to have a stage split. A simple button you could toggle on or off that changes all stages. With competitiveness on, the stage becomes a variation of the basic platform idea. With casual on, the stage would be itself in all of its goofy glory.

As a matter of fact, it would be a cool idea to have a button or game mode called competitive play, where items are automatically turned off, the stages will be set to their competitive form, and rules, livestock etc would have default settings, ready to play as fairly and competitively as you want.

Don't hope too much on it though :p

To be fair, Walk off might not be so bad this time around. If we don't have any DDD Down throw like things, maybe some could even be legal. Not saying their ideal, but until there's an obvious "No way are we playing on this with "X" character" it might be ok. Scroll could work if it was done right....just so far it's never been done right, so who knows.

Really given an open mind, the only stages that seemed overly iffy was the Nintendogs stage. Everything else seemed fine until proven BS.

Any stage that isn't random should be considered for competitive imo. So long as it doesn't give any particular characters an advantage. Like the mario 3d land stage. If the stage sticks to just having the floating platforms then you can tell (from what they showed) that you can see when and where the spikes will come. As long as they always come in the exact same time and order.

Did anybody else notice in the Smash direct where Sakurai showed off Wii fit Trainer, he had a version of the smash 4 battlefield without platforms? So essentially a FD...

Most stages seem fine in the Wii U version. Wii Fit Trainer stage has walkoffs and maybe the boxing ring has walls at the ends...

I noticed that too, seemed odd. I wonder if you can just turn off the platforms...

They all look pretty competitive actually (Battlefield, Smashville 1 & 2, Wily etc.)

BTW, how do 90% of people excited for Megaman in SSBU don't know who the Yellow Devil is? He is one of the most iconic bosses in the series.

If by iconic you mean"frustrating as all hell and is only behind the damn turrets from MM2 as the hardest boss in the series",then yeah.

The Yellow Devil in MM2 was hard for you guys? Holy crap, today's games have made some people so soft...

well Yellow devil was kind of a **** if you didn't get the pattern down, and was far harder then anything else in MM1 in comparison.

The turrets from MM2 on the other hand were just unfair since you had to go through the most taxing stage in Wily's castle to fight them and you were pretty much screwed if you ran out of ammo on your weapons.

While I agree about the turrets being crazy, I think MM1 was an overall harder game than MM2.
I mean about the Yellow Devil, after you die the first time and just see what it's about, it shouldn't be an issue anymore.

We're getting off-topic now anyway.

Indeed.

Anyway, I'm trying to identify all the stage gimmicks.

Wii Fit: The Mirror (So much processing power, we can render twice!)
Animal Crossing: Same as Smashville I assume
Skyloft: Tour stage

Care to add?

Mario 3D Land: Obstacle course
Nintendogs: Maybe the dog reacts to what happens on the stage?(gets sad when someone is KO'ed, goofs off when someone taunts, etc.)
