Smash Switch: The Second Time Smash sells Online

NINTENDO.jpg

Super Smash Bros for Switch is coming out this year, and part of that is because it's a part of selling something - The Paid Online. While we don't know much about it and much is subject to change, we do know that it's coming in September of 2018

While this is the first time that Nintendo is charging for online, it's not the first time that a Super Smash Bros game is being used to sell that online. The Nintendo Wii was the first home console from Nintendo to really utilize the online - Super Smash Bros Brawl. was the forefront of this. Unfortunately, Super Smash Bros Brawl's online turned out less than stellar for most people.

We do also know how the Nintendo Switch handles Online - for it's biggest online game at the moment, Splatoon 2, sometimes the results and disconnects can be less than stellar there too, leading from experiences that range from "Really good" to "Really iffy" even involving people to buy a new router to get it working.

However, not all is doom and gloom With the big radio silence for a subscription fee for online, and for classic games, it's very possible that "Nintendo Netflix" could very well become a reality. Excerpt from a previous interview,

"Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play. Users can play as many of the games they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription". - Nintendo Spokesperson, Kotaku
Adding online to classic games like Ice Climbers and Balloon Fight will be enjoyable, with other games to come eventually.

The future for Nintendo's Online has an exciting future ahead of it, but a previously eerie track record. What will become of the future? None of us know, but we know the spotlight is on Nintendo and Super Smash Bros for Switch will be playing a big role in that.

Are you excited for Nintendo's online service? Cautiously optimistic? Did you have a good experience with Brawl? Let us know in the comments below!

What gives with these articles that don't really have a purpose and just kinda say one thing?

"Hey remember Meta Crystal?.... uhHhh.....where's it at? haha"

"oh yeah E3 is gonna have Smash"

"Dude I just realized Smash 5 is gonna like, totally sell the Switch's online"

my guess is likely because news is pretty slow at the present time... considering this new Smash Bros doesn't have the big promotion campaign like Smash 4 and Brawl did (thankfully), there's nothing for the rabid fanatics to screech over...

I sure hope their sanity sobers up, because if we can't get a less hype-crazed mindset properly developed, I'm worried that the Smash bros series might start degenerating fast... and it ain't going to be pretty when crap hits the fan

I think they're just really trying for centralized community discussion points. News is slow at the moment, so no harm in having something to talk about.

On topic, I'll be getting the online because I want to play Smash Switch online, but am also a Nintendo shill.

If the online service is spotty or flops for Smash it's probably going to dictate how important it is to them down the line though, so hopefully it'll be worth it.

Really hoping Gamecube games are included in this "Library of classic games" they're talking about. There's a ton of Gamecube games I'd love to play but I really don't want to spend 80+ dollars just to get a copy.

Hey LovinMitts,

As the writer spearheading daily articles, and the Director of Content of the site, it's about having something on the website daily. We realize that for some people a lot of these articles may be boring, but a lot of people check SmashBoards. More news pieces and long-form pieces are nice and something we're aiming for! Both types of content are just not as easy to do - We're not a big name news site that operates on a budget with some form of financing such-as Kotaku, IGN, Polygon, etc. This is a love of the labor for the writing team as is.

We do have applications open for writers, last I checked (if not, Scribes and I will update the call for writers) so if you know someone that might be a fit for more news articles or long forms, by all means, direct them our way. There's more ideas we're working our way through, so that's exciting.

As for the E3 Smash article? That was news on this site, a bit late, but news nonetheless. Many articles on other websites said things along the lines of "Only Smash will be at E3" which was simply hearsay. If you read it as a community article, it's because we're interested in having our users interact with each other - SmashBoards is, at heart, both a forum and a front page.

Hope you understand. My Private Messages are open if you would like to discuss this further.

I haven't payed for online on my other consoles but I really want to enjoy Smash online so it might push me to pay.

My online experiences on the Switch so far are only on Minecraft's Tumble minigame, which only works half the time, and Rocket League, which works perfectly 95% of the time.

Hopefully online for Smash Switch will at least be as good as it was on Wii U. Maybe 1/10 matches, had noticeable lag and even fewer were just unbearable.

Just give us GGPO netcode and I'd be good to go. Playing SSB online without GGPO or Fightcade netcodes is no good.

D
I'll totally pay for online multiplayer. It's just so much of a unique feature that sets a console apart from any device imaginable. Not even PCs can play online multiplayer as well as consoles.

Don't worry. I'm joking.
