Smash Regular Season Interest?

I've had this idea floating around in my head about having a regular season of smash. As in, everyone has an ordered schedule of people to play, and at the end there is a seeded playoffs. I was thinking it would be cool to have an nfl style league, where there are 2 conferences, and several divisions in each conference. Division winners go to playoffs, and of course there would be wildcard spots as well. I'm getting to detailed for this post...

Anyway this thread is just to gauge the interest of the community. Keep in mind it would probably be about 2 sets a week, which really isn't much time at all considering how much smash we play. So yea please respond to this if your interested, I'm not going to set this up if there are only 5 people willing. I'd like bigger than a usual tournament size. I think this is a good idea because it entails a lot more games than a tourney, and forces you to play people you don't usually play. Also would give us some concrete info for that player tier list eh guys?

Also mods, i will make another thread for the actual season in the competitive section, i just wanted to gauge interest with this one.

The difference between this and the ladder is that on the ladder everyone has to make their own matches. Here, I would be telling everyone exactly who to play. All people have to do is find a time to play the person within a time period (1 week?). And since there would be so many matches, forfeits could be handed out at a hard deadline, as opposed to tournaments where things drag on because no one wants to kick someone out of a tournament.

Anyway Nova, I take it you are interested then? :)

It's Grand Finals, though. Fynal wrecked you. LAWL
You're right, though.

Anyways, I think nova is probably right, but if it works I'll be interested in it.

Olikus: what about maddy vs mahie and lawrencelot's matches? And what about myself in OCC2
(not quite the same since I wasn't meant to be put in there but well)
? =D

On topic, this seems hard to make it work but good luck :).

The only way I could imagine it working is between clans/crews, it would need a ton of hype and competition to exist for very long.

standard reply post to this:

Not gonna work, but if it does i'm in.

Be more like Peek guys! Its not gonna be that hard to pull off. I expect everyone will forfeit about 1 game, but the good thing is you can keep going with the season after you forfeit.

Gonna edit the first post to keep track of who wants to do it. (Fynal, Limacon, if you guys meant to indicate interest by posting here, i didn't take it as such. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also sorry Europe but whether or not you meant to say you're interested the Atlantic Ocean says you can't play. Sorry!)

You still have to consider what Nova said though, lots of new ideas come up but alot dont finish.

Now that I think about it if matches arent played you can probably count it as a tie? or a win for the active one?

I imagine if a set is not played there would be 3 scenarios:

1) A tie. Both players clearly tried to work out a match time, but nothing worked during the time period.

2) One win, one loss. One player tried to contact the other and set up a time, but the opponent did not respond.

3) 2 losses. Neither player attempted to contact the other.

Determining who tried to contact who would have to be determined by me in a completely situational, dictorial way.

You can put me down as interested (though my name would just be padding out the list, lol). I would love some good incentive to play more often, which is what I assume the point of this is.

To get started it is going to need a very well laid out framework, otherwise I don't see how it is different than a ladder or tournament (especially if it is every man for himself).

This is a fantastic idea. I would make sure to only allow people who are ACTIVE. Too many times people see a competitive event, sign up, and can never be found because they're not regulars. Be a **** if you must.

Depending on the number of people you could set up a format similar to the NFL. Play division foes twice, play a cross-conference division, and play same-conference opponents who are ranked the same in their respective division. If you get 32 people, that is.

That is precisely the plan for the schedule, should this happen. I think it could be done with 24 people, with 3 team divisions. That's 2 X 2 = 4 division games, 3 in conference non-division, 3 out of conference non-division. Total 10 games regular season, as opposed to 14 with 32 (ignoring the 2 random games nfl teams play each year).

From experience helping run and participating in leagues for different games, it seems that the best way to schedule is to set a standard day and time (ie- Monday at 9EST), but to allow participants to schedule at a different day/time within a time frame. One league used some (possibly modified) swiss sorting algorithm (which is used in chess tournaments) to decide who plays whom. I could probably get a copy of it if it's needed.

One suggestion I have for this is to use an IRC room and p2p. IRC doesn't require an account (or requiring generally annoying software) like MSN or AIM. Plus chat instead of IM would lead to better participation since you can idle and hear about games, especially if someone livestreams each game (which would give the system an edge over ladders/tournaments).

I'm totally down for this too. Great idea Clubba.
I kind of agree with the idea of some kind of set schedule, but with players being able to both opt to change the match time. It wouldn't have to be specifically one day/time. It could be like a Monday-Thurs. league, and players could potentially give there availability for those nights. Players with similar available hours could be in the same division/conference to minimize rescheduling, as opposed to arbitrarily creating divisions.
whadaya think?

Probably going to give a week for everyone to finish their games, since people work on different schedules, but there will be a hard deadline for forfeit. As far as who plays who, the schedule will be predetermined before the season. NFL format, if you ain't know it look it up.

See above for time frame stuff, but yea basically what you said but with a longer time frame. I really like the idea of similar schedules in similar divisions, hadn't thought of that yet. I was just going to make the divisions as even as possible. I still will try to keep them even, but scheduling difficulties may be a priority for this, you are right.

p2p would not be required for the league, as not everyone does p2p or can host it. Server would be fine if the players decided to play there. Really the best way to schedule matches would be through smashboards accounts, either PM's or even on the wall public messages so I could see who was contacting who (for forfeit decisions). IRC doesn't sound like a bad idea though. Anyone use gchat though? All you need is a gmail account, no software (i believe, though could be wrong). Livestream is... possible, maybe for playoffs, but way to hard to organize for all the regular season I think.

aha, pikachu training eh?
Yea, your alter ego. Who's gonna show up on gameday? no one knows...

:p I forgot that in my last game we had only 8 games in a season, and a ton more competitors. With a smaller community, it's unlikely that you'd need any sort of complex sorting algorithm

Ok, good thing I started writing the first post yesterday. I'll do my best to get it up by tonight, but if I don't I'll be out of town fri-monday, so i wouldn't be able to get it up until Monday. I'll really try to get it up tonight so people can start signing up. This will be in the competitive events forum, for those who don't know. Tentative start date Monday, July 4th. Starting on (American) independence day has to be a sign of success right?
