Smash DIing/Teching out of a rest

So I was playing with my fox friend and I got an upthrow rest. When I rested the sparks went flying and the damage was added but instead of him flying into oblivion he just kinda fell down and then smashed me as if nothing happened. This isn't the first time its happened to us. Is teching/smash DIing out of rest like that a thing or what is going on?

Phantom hit. One of melee's strangest and most pointless mechanics. They occur when your attack's hitbox makes contact with the target's hurtbox at one point only (they're tangential) and cause the attack to do 50% damage and no knockback.
