Be respectful. Never talk **** to the person you're about to face or have already faced and beaten. Being nice to the person that you're going to play will make them less frustrated if they lose. Keeping a positive attitude with the person you're facing is the most important factor.

Take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that you're playing a video game.

I always remember to stay positive in victory and defeat. If I'm winning, I commend my opponent for good plays (i.e. "Sick upsmash read on that first stock), and always sincerely thank them for a good game afterwards.

It's a little harder when losing, especially hard. I try to treat them as learning opportunities - asking my opponent what went wrong or what I can do differently. If there is a huge skill gap and I'm getting repeatedly fourstocked, I usually stop after a few games, tell him thanks for the games but I think playing someone else would be more beneficial for both of us :)

Also never apologize to the person you just beat for beating them, that is the dickest of moves.

It's hard to say when or why but eventually every player at one point realizes that if you can remain calm and understand why you lost instead of being angry you can get so much more out of every game and tournament experience. It really sucks more than anything when I see one match ruin someones entire tournament whether it be at the top level or locals
