Here's a link to the history behind Super Smash Bros. Melee - it's part of the "Official Everything Thread" under Melee Discussion. It doesn't talk about Super Smash Bros. 64, to my knowledge, but it does have some interesting stuff on how the first tournaments for SSBM were conducted, how rules changed, etc.

http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=59214&page=1&pp=15

The "history" is given in the 6th post of the thread linked above, so scroll down until you see the huge wall of text and then read it.

Oh okay. In that case I doubt you'll find much - it's not that common for game companies to publish detailed timelines/development phases for their games, but hey, I could be wrong.

The closest I can think of for that ever happening is with StarCraft...sclegacy.com has a section that shows what StarCraft looked like from the beginning of its development to the end. Looks crazy - if anyone wants to check it out, it's on sclegacy.com - click on "Encyclopedia" and then click "StarCraft Evolution."

my theory
master hand is teh hand of a kid
only that the kid is weird and has teh power to reanimate dolls
so the kid reanimates the dolls and makes them fight
however, here's the new part
the kid generates a force field around the dolls that control the gravity and also protect the dolls
every time one's force field is hit, the gravity field weakens, which explains the physics of smash
the force field also protects them from all physical harm which is why no one gets burned up or falcon punched to pieces

TC,

check the last update on the Iwata asks: Sakurai interview (available on Wii.com)

He doesn't say too much, but he talks a little bit about the creation of the original game. Including its original name and the fact that it didn't use Nintendo characters at first.
