Okay, really. I saw this dude at a debate tournament (yes a debate tournament), and he had a Wii there and was charging 1$ for a round of SSBB. I asked him if a no items 1v1 was okay, he said sure. Raep..... so badly. He let me play another round because I won. So I beat him again, really badly. Then his friend, who I thought he was better, played me. ***** once more, and then twice. Then more people came and it was FFAs. Basically I got infinite free rounds because I never lost. Eventually I had to leave because I had a debate event to go to.
But yeah.... Competitive Brawler >>>>>>>>>> Casual Brawler. That much was made blatantly obvious.

Yeah, but that's only because they're not used to Short Hopping, not moving exclusively with rolldodge etc. After 1 day, they'd seem like a passable Brawler if they did, they'd look like they understand competitive play.
Now cut to Melee say, and after a month's worth of solid practicing, the guy can wavedash, l cancel etc. He then goes to his 1st tourney thinking "I'm a badass I can WD!". He then gets murdered after he crumbles under pressure and keeps messing up his tech skill. When he's finally perfected it say another month later, he then has to brush up on "teh mindgamez".
Not saying Melee is more competitive than Brawl, I'm just saying Brawl's level of tech skill compared to Melee is somewhat small.
Everyone seems to have ph1r3 now, Malleo have little ph1r3, Weegee have little green ph1r3, Lucario have blue ph1r3, Ganondork, Mew2, and wh1t3 Pikmanz have purple ph1r3, Ike, Bowser, Fox, Falco, Charizard, red Pikmanz, and C. Falcon have ph1r3, and Roy have teh ph1r3.

Really though. "Teh mindgamez" as you say, are very important in brawl, perhaps more so than melee due to decreased hitstun. It's not so much about what you can combo into, but what you are smart enough to trick your opponent into.
And it has taken me a lot longer than a day to achieve the level of skill I'm at now. This is not because I suck, it's because Brawl takes quite a bit of experience.
Essentially in Brawl, when you have a match of 1v1 no items on a nuetral/CP stage, the better player will win. I'd say definitely fall within the realm of "competitive". The OP irks me for blatantly ignoring all of this and saying that tripping takes all competitiveness out the game. Come on. Honestly, now. Tripping is much more of an annoyance than anything else. And if Falco is chaingrabbing me and trips, well hey! I'm happy. Tripping just made his chaingrab less broken. It was probably meant, in a way, to prevent prolonged 0%-death combos from being 100% successful, and when I look at the ICs, I'm not so sure that that's a terrible thing.

No... D3 has a standing infinite, so tripping is no balance for 0-deaths.

Well, just because it doesn't stop all 0-deaths doesn't mean it wasn't intended to stop them. It possibly was. Does anyone actually think the 0-deaths were intentional? I think tripping was meant to stop all that, but they didn't expect Dedede (or anyone, but he's the one who got them) to have ones where they didn't even have to move.
If it were really meant to stop 0-deaths, it wouldn't have a paltry 1% chance of occurring.
Also, considering Sakurai's comments about how he wants everybody to have fun, I'm pretty sure infinites were never intended.
