I've just got done helping someone with his fic's opening and gave him the best constructive criticism possible to help out. He had also asked me when I was going to update my original work and I've told him that I gave up on it. (Though it's obviously due to the fact that it's nowhere near as popular as my fanfiction with the word "Sonic" slapped on it). Eve Evolution has about 350 viewers while my other work Sonic & Sega All Stars: Subspace Unleashed has about a whooping 4,850 viewers from 13 different countries (Including America, United Kingdom, and Australia as my dedicated fanbase) worldwide averaging up to 90 viewers in a day.

That pretty much shows you the MAIN reasons why I had updated the latter up to this day during the summer of holiday breaks. So yes, something original can most likely be forgotten and not garner a fanbase unless it's a fanficon that already has big named characters involved.
