It goes off the Renaissance artist funding model known as patronage. It's more crowdsourced, like Kickstarter, because vast improvements in technology and capital accumulation mean more people have the means and disposable income to support content creators.
I planned to make something like that back in 2010, but I ultimately scrapped it.
