Instead of arguing for a certain date, let's break down what month it could be and the arguments for each

MARCH
The Current Month. Usually there's an announcement a month or two before the launch to let people save up the cash so I wouldn't think so.

APRIL
See above

MAY
Perhaps but I think they'll wait until after E3. Besides, Mario Kart 8 launches this month so they wouldn't want to cross over.

JUNE
E3. This is the one to watch and if a release hasn't been announced yet it will be at this event.

JULY
Earliest possible release date in my opinion.

AUGUST

SEPTEMBER

OCTOBER

NOVEMBER

DECEMBER
Da Holidays. This gives the most possible dev time but has to fight with big releases for attention.

If anyone has anything else to add please do.

Well there's the obvious holiday option since it'd result in a ton of sales, but I think somewhere between July and October could allow for a relatively competition-free release.

September 23rd, 2014, the 125th anniversary for Nintendo, right out of the summer drought, and some time before the holiday season.

I'm all for Smash on my birthday!

Wishfully, I would like Smash to be released NOW at the end of summer. Maybe late August, early September.

I'd actually wager sometime in the Holiday season.
Nintendo is aware Smash is a cash cow, and it would probably cause a killing in sales for Christmas.

Definitely June-July for the Wii U version. Then November-December for the 3ds version.

I hope it's July/August, but that September 23rd date makes way. Too. Much. Sense.

SSB likes celebrating Nintendo's History (at least Brawl did), what better time to enjoy that history than on Nintendo's 125th birthday?

First of Ninty denied a Spring release so no way it will come out on in spring also even though when they say holiday Q4 (Xmas) no big games..CoD ever release in december its too late for pre orders snd public awareness etc.

October is very possible but i strongly think either November or September.

I also strongly think we will get a release date at E3 2014.

My 2 Cents.

September or November trust me.

If the slightesttt miracle we get it in July or August like Brawl it is a miracle like i said.

September/November

I think the most probable dates are July-September. Late July being the most probable in my own opinion.

Fortunately, Activision seems to have realized the COD Cash Cow is running a little dry so now the series is gonna be bi-annual with this year being a skip so let's see what E3 brings.

This may not mean anything, but some places are opening pre-orders. Perhaps this could mean a release is closer than we think?

Ive been telling myself it'll release soon since 2012...
Its strange to look back on these couple of years as a blur of Daily Pics and smash headlines...

Anyway callin it right now, surprise release date on April 1st. Everyone will think its some sorta elaborate prank until dawning on the realization that it's legit. Flash mobs all over the world, wii u and 3ds sellin like hotcakes.

Smasboards suck
Target put those out really early before one of the Halo games before, months early and the game didn't drop till fall/November. I wouldn't buy too much into that.

Target's done that before, also for Spring 2014 to make any sense like on the card it'd have to be coming out June 20th or earlier. They're guessing.

Well depending on how early in Fall/November we're talking about, that'd still be earlier than the Holiday season many people expect.

Oh , my thumb's blocking the "coming" part. The card itself says nothing about spring. :p

If I had to guess, somewhere between September and December seems about right for Smash 4's release, but it will come down to how much progress the game developers are making before that point.

E3 2014 might be when we'll get a more precise release date, but we still need to take into account potential delays, much like with what Tropical Freeze had to deal with.

Fall or Winter.
We probably have half of the characters revealed. That will give enough time to reveal the rest.

I'd LIKE for it to come out in June/July...so I can have a chance to play the game before starting college and getting ultra busy.

would they really hold onto a finished game just to release it in the winter when it could be out selling copy's I mean the game will still be around in winter they wont disappear.

I could've sworn I posted what I'm about to already...

But yes, I agree entirely. If anything it would hurt sales to hold out till the Holidays when other games and bundles are vying for people's attentions as well. Sometime during July-October would give it more chance to be the one big thing out there.

I'd expect it sometime in November, but before Thanksgiving. Big holiday releases tend to come out around that time, and they wouldn't want to miss the Black Friday rush for a big release game like this.

Tropical Freeze ate a delay to avoid getting cannibalized by 3D world. It was ready as of November.

SSB's pretty unique gamewise and it has two versions. Wii U getting it is fine for late summer, and let the 3DS version drop on the Holidays.

I've heard this a few times, and I just can't say I see the merit of dropping the two versions separately. If it's as a way to get people to buy a Wii U out of sheer impatience, I guess, but I doubt Nintendo sees the two versions as competing with each other.

I don't think it's about competing (at least the way I see it) and more about what you said about getting the Wii U to bolster those sales from the impatient types, and then still making that holiday boom by pulling out the 3DS version. I don't see games like SSB suddenly not making magical sales because it's outside the holiday considering Brawl, but I don't think it's a bad idea to spread them out a bit and try to bolster the Wii U via the impatient edge.

I suppose I see that as at least decently likely. Smash 4 also seems like a perfect bundle game though, especially packaged in with a Wii U, so if they released something like that around, idk, Septemberish, it could potentially make a killing.
