Oh, doi. I just reread it again. So as long as you get one that is 1080p, you're all set?

I am curious as to the brand name of said cheap TVs, however. So this post does something besides the fact to prove I'm not stupid haha

Well, I don't know about TV specifications I just know about game programming (A huge chunk of graphics programming is rendering and upscaling/downscaling is a very important part of rendering). I can assure you that a TV that has an HDMI input and a native 1080p output (with no conversion) will not lag. I just don't know which models are native 1080p and which models are just converting, although I do expect most models nowadays to be native 1080p since quite frankly HD has been around for so long. It isn't like HD is the new "craze" in the block that you need to include in order to fit in. It's more like HD is the new standard now and "Standard Definition" has been completely replaced.

Basically its exactly as you quoted in your first post. If you wanted to play a Wii or a Gamecube system on an HDTV upscaling was mandatory, creating huge amounts of lag. Basically the TV was just "too good" for the game graphics and needed to convert those "low graphics" into its own better resolution, wasting a lot of processing time on the TV's slow processor.

Playing a Wii U on the other hand, will only require downscaling if your TV does not have a native 720/1080p output or upscaling if you are trying to use component cables on a TV that does not have <480p. So if your TV has an HDMI input (which most TVs do), it is very probable that it will have native 720p or 1080p output, which would result in no lag. If your TV does not have an HDMI input (meaning you have to use component cables) it is very probable your TV has native 480p, meaning also no lag (although the game won't be in HD).

Yes obviously some HDTV's aren't actually native HD and just have their processors do conversions for images but I am willing to bet that with all the HD devices that exist nowadays, making a TV which reads in non-HD and then converts into HD instead of just being able to read and display in HD is not the norm.

Just as a side note. All demos were on HDTVs and there was no noticeable lag at any point during any of the demos. Remember that the pros also played on an HDTV and there was no mention of lag at all. I personally played at least 80 matches and noticed no lag at all in any of my games.
