Should wall jumping be removed?

With Lucario's reveal I went back and played as him for a bit. After that I played Samus.

I feel like wall jumping or latching on is a mechanic that's hardly ever used... and just frustrates me any time it happens by mistake. Does anybody out there actually use it with significant effect?

I actually found the wall mechanics fun with Lucario on certain stages in Brawl. Sometimes people would try to edge-hog but instead of going for the ledge I could go for some of the structure below and cling, wait for them to lose invincibility and then recover upward over the edge back on stage. This clinging mechanic was unique for Lucario because his recovery often followed terrain like a fluid motion, making it easy and comfortable to do.

As for other characters, I'm really not sure how it worked out for them. Most competitive stages don't really warrant it as an essential skill to master, and goes largely forgotten because of this.

No, why would I want a unique mechanic removed? What?

I actually really enjoy wall-jumping, and I hope it stays in the game, I never really do it by accident.

I guess a better subject title would have been "does anybody actually use wall jumping?" :p

Lucario's recovery is pretty terrible, I can see how that would be useful. But it happens more often than not when I'm not expecting it.

I think only characters known for wall-jumping should wall-jump...then again, that would probably only leave Mario characters, Mega Man, and Sonic. I don't know, I just like the idea of giving characters...well...character. Things like Luigi's new flutter jump or Lucario's upgraded aura mechanic are good examples of what I want to see in this game. I want to see as much "Nintendo" as possible in this game, if you know what I mean. I want callbacks, I want nostalgia, I want unique mechanics, I want characterization. Although, I do find the "stick to edge thing" annoying. If characters are going to wall-jump, then they should actually do so.

looks like brawl hd to me.
so you expected to look like a game from 1999 or 2001 instead?

On the toppie, no, Walljumping is a mainstay like tethers and floating, no need to scrap original character techs for nothing.

I don't see why it should be removed. Though, I think characters like Luigi and Kirby should wall-jump (Kirby can wall jump with the Ninja ability) and wall-sliding should be added.

Lucario was an excellent wall jumper. I like the mechanic a lot. I would like to see more uses for it though.

Keep it, but make it as sharp as it was in Melee, so you need to make a more deliberate motion.

A FIGHTING GAME LOOKS LIKE IT'S PREDECESSOR?! GEE WIZ MISTER! YOU SURE KNOW A LOT ABOUT GAMES! MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME HOW IT PLAYS! UWAAA

Yes, it does like like Brawl, but in HD. Does it play like Brawl? who knows, I haven't played it.
All of you misread Renji's post (with the possible exception of RODO, who may have been playing coy). He wasn't implying that it looks like a visually upgraded Brawl; Only that Smash 4 seems to be borrowing the casual-friendly, anti-competitive mechanics and mindset of Brawl.

Well I was playing a case of sarcasm, but the drift is that we cannot say what and what not this is until we see more gameplay vids(of which we've seen...1) or play it ourselves, rather then just theroymonning images and saying "yep, Brawl/Melee 2."

The only stage from Brawl I remeber wall jumping being useful in is Yoshi's Island; that was just one stage.

It's really hard to tell when most people that say "it looks like HD Brawl" usually imply that it looks like Brawl in HD.

It's come in handy to me a couple of times, so I'd like to to stay.

I see no point in removing it, you can do some clever things with it, really.

Now if they made it more blatant like in Young Link's target stage, that'd be great. Assuming there would miraculously be individual target stages again

Mario should be able to slide down the wall like in Mario 64.
Let me follow this thread of thought.
One of Links should be able to enter the walls and leave at will without gaining horizontal momentum, with a time limit for staying in.
Sonic should be occasionally able to run up walls instead of wall jumping.
Samus's walljump should be harder to execute than ones of other characters.
Fire Emblem characters should have a bigger shield while being backed by a wall.

I found myself using it alot in project m as a means of recovering back onto the stage.
It works on stages like Dracula's Castle and Distant Planet.

I tend to use walljumps when Im Mario. I usually try to go for a meteor smash (50% successful) and I will use the wall to jump back up and recover.

Make Wall-Jumping universal.

Seriously, just let everyone do it.

Well, there is some reason to it. Why should Yoshi get to do it of his jump is already pretty big? Why should Kirby do it if he can fly? Why should Peach be able to do it when she can float. It all comes down to recovery. Yes, we may have some characters like Bowser and Ganon who have pretty meh recoveries, but their strengths lies in tanking and KOing, not recovering

Man I guess I'm not as good at this game as I thought...lol

That traumatic Richmond, ca tournament a couple years ago apparently wasn't a fluke

I think wall jumping is a very good mechanic. It adds diversity to the game by making some characters more unique than others. Removing it would be taking a step in the wrong direction when it comes to game creativity and diverse characters.
