While it may just be wishful thinking.... there are plenty of cases were Mods go on to become full games. Even though there couldn't be nintendo characters, do you think Project M Backroom could do it? what do you think? Should or could the Project M team make their own game? Do you think it could succeed and become popular enough to enable professional play?

I think they should just keep to modding Brawl. I want to see PM evolve, grow, and get a pretty good identity for itself.

The point of Project M was essentially to use the assets of Brawl into a fun, playable game and in most ways a proper spiritual successor to Melee. Its also very apparent that the play styles of most of the characters are heavily inspired by pre-existing Smash characters, and in essence Project M is based around the game of Smash Bros itself; it still uses the same rules, same art, same characters, and more.

With that in mind, not only would crafting a completely original "Smash" game be incredibly harder than the already difficult to make Project M and face possible legal difficulties, there would also be little motive to actually create an entirely new game from scratch as opposed to the mentality behind the production of PM.

I'd like to see them do something once they're done with PM. We need more Smash type games. Though I do think some of them worked on Air Dash Online, but that flopped.

Yeah, they could definitely become capable of making a fighting game like that. Look how well they balanced Project M (OK, well characters like Lucas and Sonic can become major threats but most of the time they've been beaten). That's one reason, balance is one of the most important aspects to a fighting game, and they'd get that right if not perfectly right.

Nah, I think they should focus on Project M.

It took nearly three years for the first "complete" version of Project M, with every Brawl character reworked for Project M (along with Mewtwo and Roy), and that's with using an engine and assets that were already available to them. If they were to create a completely new game from scratch, it would take ten times the amount of effort and time for probably an alpha build.

Obviously a game of their own would require funding and a larger team. This is hypothetical, if they could find a publisher and all that....

I mean. Sakurai isn't making Melee again... so it would be nice to see another developer try to build another Technical Brawler

I'd like for the Project M team to develop a parallel Smash mod that is less like Melee and more like a whole new type of Smash game.
