Should Sakurai announce all unlockables before the game comes out?

Before, I thought for sure that Sakurai would only announce the starters and would let us discover the unlockable characters on our own. But the new Wi-fi announcement has got me thinking...

It seems very likely that Sakurai will have no choice but to let all unlockables be used in online play. This basically means that anything you haven't unlocked will be "spoiled" when you decide to battle other people online. Any other alternative, such as only matching you up with people that have unlocked as much/less than you have, would probably be too difficult to successfully implement.

In order to have at least some sense of surprise when it comes to discovering who's in the game, don't you think it makes more sense for Sakurai to reveal it to us on the blog? At least this way, it's better than having us just go online and see random people using Sonic and Ridley and being like "He's in the game?!".

I dont think he wil reveal all of the characters, but I think he wil soon divide the sections into

-Starting characters
-Unlockable characters

Then post characters from there

Who cares if you fight a character you don't have when you fight online. It's the same thing with Mario Kart DS...no big deal.

However, as much as I complain sometimes, I'm glad that Sakurai is doing it the way he is.

Na I don't think he should. Some people (including myself) may not go online until they've unlocked almost everything (playability wise that is, all chars/stages). It can be like MK DS where you can use whoever you have unlocked, go play online at your own risk knowing that you might get some stuffs spoiled.

I think revealing things in the Dojo is a much more "surprising" way of finding out who's in the game than just seeing other people use unlockable characters online.

But the thing is, people that don't want to see them can stray away from those sites that would spoil it, whereas the other way around we don't have a choice.

Well, in the past he did unveil the unlockable characters on the Melee blog, but he only began revealing them after the game had hit store shelves...

So I imagine anyone we see prior to release will be a starter, or at least we won't be told how to unlock said character...

Also, he has 74 updates left, which I'm sure he could fill with many useless things like Piplup or some more final smashes. We now know that he can still use a lot of stuff for the Subspace Emissary, as well.

He might as well. They'll all be on the internet even if he doesn't. People in the gaming industry get their hands on games sooner then everybody else, and as soon as anyone anywhere has the game the entire character list will be all over the internet.

Just because Mario Strikers gives you all of the hidden characters online even if you haven't unlocked them doesn't mean Brawl will do that. It will most likely be like most games are online. You'll only be able to choose characters that you have unlocked, and your opponent(s) will only be able to choose characters that they have unlocked.

I think that they should do it like Metroid Prime Hunters. If you play against somebody online using a hidden character and you beat them, you unlock that character.

^I pretty much agree. I feel like there's no point in keeping the unlockable characters a secret when the whole roster will get leaked the day it's out in Japan anyway. The Internet is just too widespread and easily accessible these days.

Who knows what Sakurai is going to actually do, though.

this is actually the enitre reason he made the dojo in the first place. he knows everything will be spoiled upon release so he'd rather do it his own way and have it be clean and polished.

this is exactly why ALL the characters will be revealed before release just like Snake

i hadn't even thought about that....i suppose if people really don't want to be "spoiled" that they're going to have to keep out of random matches until they unlock everyone.

but i hope Sakurai at least reveals some unlockables on the Dojo before the release. but some of the more unexpected characters i'd like to find out for myself.

(disregarding Sakurai proving you wrong) Wouldn't Nintendo and the third party companies want the character known and advertised before release? If anything, I'd expect those characters to all be revealed before release. I expect that Sakurai will reveal all the characters before release anyway. Not all the stages, or items, or pokemon, or assist characters, or music, or bosses, or game modes, or additional character information, but certainly each character will have a profile. That's what I think.

I wouldn't care about Sakurai revealing all of the characters. I just want to have them so I can jump into the meat of the game (Multiplayer and Subspace).

Besides, what's the big deal about spoiling a fighting game? >_>

Yeah I'd probably like him to reveal every character himself rather than hearing it from Japan or whatever. It was still fun seeing the "Warning! Challenger Approaching!" display even if I knew who the character was.

Secret characters is the main fun in smash.
I would sit their quite a bit and try to guess who's face would appear on those question marks.

Back in the good old days of Smash64..Me and my friends hearts would jump when ''New Challenger Approaching'' Screen would pop up. Why? Well, we had not a slightest clue who the secrets were. We had no access to internet nor guides. This is what kept us on night and day playing non stop. If he does announce Unlockables, I think it should be done similar to what the original Smash Bros. did..And thats shadow the figures.

Releasing Unlockable information on the site after the release? I'm fine with that.

I think the only reason he announced Snake was, because he was previously announced. I still think he will only announce starts other than snake. I think there will be about 25-26 starters. I think the others will be Falcon, Lucas, Olimar, Ray 01 (I think he has a very good chance and he comes off more as a starter to me), Possibly Dedede, and maybe someone else.

I imagine it would be funner on Wifi since your actually playing the game and not anticipating for site updates.

People who really care about spoilers wont go onto smashbros.com, it's like how nobody went to muggle net before the harry potter book was released.

besides, it's just smash bros, not some epic adventure game, you will have fun playing this game, even if you see all the spoilers.

Oh, and yes, I hope he shows all of them as soon as possible.

AND! if you're reading this now, you're looking at smash boards, therefore you're going to have all the spoilers the second they come out, so why even debate it?
