It really depends on what gives it an M rating. Like if Smash earned an M rating for the tight-fitted Zero Suit Samus as it is in Smash 4, then yeah, I'll support an M rated Smash since the ratings board would have officially messed up. But generally I interpret the question as, should the developers of Smash deliberately go out of their way to make an M rated game? And I am against developers going out of their way to earn an M rating in general. The goal is to make an enjoyable game with enjoyable mechanics, not to strive to offend the censors.

If Assassin's Creed couldn't make it on the Wii U, I see no hope for any M-rated game.
It's not the rating which sells, it's the brand.
People is not going to see the new Smash in stores, go like "Oh ****ing sweet the new Smash Bros." then look for the rating and be like "oh wait it's rated M? No way I'm getting this".
Parents buy GTA to their children. Ratings has nothing to do with sells.
It's pretty much obvious now that Nintendo sells thanks to their brand (Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Smash Bros.). The Wonderful 101 was for children (even though adult audience could appreciate it a little bit more maybe) yet it didn't sell because nobody ****ing knows what Wonderful 101 is.

An M rated Metroid Horror type game? YES PLEASE! An M rated Smash Bros.? NO THANK YOU! Smash is for everyone. It's the people's game. It's for fans of all ages, that's why you have Pokémon and Mario facing off against Robin and Samus. Anything above a T rating would be stupid. And now that they altered the weapon items to look more cartoony, there isn't even a reason for an M rated Smash game to exist.

Why should they? Nintendo's franchises are not M-rated and don't need to be, so I see no reason for their get-together game to be, making something violent and gritty "just because" is the most stupid thing ever, it should serve some kind of purpose at least.

Are you joking? Most children today play M-rated games like GTA, Halo, and Call of duty! I'm pretty sure the sales will be fine.
Yeah, and the kids that don't play those games are the ones "stuck playing Nintendo".
Those kids wouldn't be allowed to play an M-Rated games.

The kids who do play M-Rated games (GTA, CoD, etc.) wouldn't give to ****s about Nintendo.

I have a feeling that it wouldn't happen regardless. I'm pretty sure it would be harder to get certain characters in the game if they went that route. I don't image Game Freak for example wouldn't be too keen with a game where Pokemon get dismembered via Mortal Kombat.

Heck I'm not even sure how willing Nintendo would be to put Mario characters into that kind of situation just seems... off putting.

There is literally no reason for Smash to be rated M. Snake's the only character from a franchise that has any M-rated components, and none of the things that make Metal Gear M-rated are in Smash. And anything that WOULD make it M-rated would, in my opinion, add nothing positive or necessary to the experience.

Unless you meant M for Manly, in which case it's already secretly rated M, because Captain Falcon is here.

An M-rated Smash Bros?

But seriously, Smash should just always be the fun fighting game without anything too 'graphic'...

Just the thought of that is repulsive. I say no. It's fine the way it is; being fun for the family.

I'm saying no. I do like plenty of M rated series, Mortal Kombat and Devil May Cry come to mind. But I really don't see how Smash Bros could benefit from an M rating. There's so few M rated Nintendo franchises that there'd be no point. At the most, the series should stay T or E10.

Nintendo audience =/= GTA audience

Parents buying kids Nintendo stuff are far more likely to stick with stuff suitable for their kids. It would DEFINITELY sell less.

Making Smash Bros Rated M isn't going to bring in new audiences, you're just limiting what you could sell it to. Believe it or not, there ARE parents that are strict with what kids should play. Not every parent are the same, dude.

This would be an incredibly stupid idea if done intentionally. Even if not done intentionally, it'd still be a stupid idea actually.

There's no question that it would sell less and would hurt the sales more than it would if it was at T or below. With T, at least there's some kind of "Eh, it's just T, so why not?" If it's M, that's a much bigger decision to make for a parent buying their kid the game. Not to mention, the kid wouldn't be able to buy it themselves without ID. The console, generally marketed towards a younger more casual audience, would be deprived of availability for one of its biggest franchises.

All, in all, this will NEVER happen and for the right reasons too.

Nah. No. Nah.

What a silly idea.

Do you have any idea how badly M-Rated games sell on Nintendo consoles?
I agree with you but this should be qualified:

Modern Nintendo consoles.

This sold somewhere between over 2.5 - 3.3 million copies depending where you look despite being one of the last N64 games and all but requiring the Expansion Pak, which was sold separately.

I dunno. I am pretty sure the difficulty of 101 was definitely directed to adults and late teens more than children.

My folks wouldn't let me play Mortal Kombat back in the day, and that was BEFORE ratings existed. They were on the ball, man.

What the hell would be necessary to add to smash to make it rated M?

At most there are some Nintendo things they left out to stop it from being rated T

Just, why?
Nintendo aint like that. There is no reason to try to push an M rating on a game that doesn't need it.
Only the kool kids whos parents don't care about ratings would be able to play it.

Even Snake and ZSS couldn't make Brawl an M-Rated game, so they would have to needlessly tack on stuff to make it like that. It doesn't make sense at all from a design standpoint.

Also, considering how many of Nintendo's franchises are colourful and kiddie in terms of appearance, they would have trouble fitting in. Can you really imagine Mario or Kirby in a mature setting?

Anyone remember Conkers Bad Fur Day? That was changed to an M rated type game and it did terrible. Idk if Conker was around before Diddy Kong Racing, even if he wasn't it is obvious that taking a family friendly game or character and turning it "adult" never works. Also Bmx XXX that originally was Dave Mirra BMX 3 also bombed

NOPE! NO! DON'T WANT IT! IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! It's unnecessary and VERY much not Nintendo. I shake my head in horror at the very notion or mention of an M rated Smash Bros. game.

M-Rated Smash Bros? No, there is no point.

New First Party Nintendo IP that is designed to be M-Rated? Go for it, Nintendo. You have nothing to lose.

I feel like it would lose a lot of it's charm and wouldn't really gain enough out of the transformation. I'll admit that Conker's dramatic change was pretty entertaining and fun, but I don't think it would work well with Smash Bros. What would be the point anyway? You couldn't do fatalities or anything unless you changed the core mechanics of the game.

I could care less. but i don't see the reason to make it M just for it being M. and to get more of a wider audience ya because kids don't play cod.

everyone in this thread said:
Smash should never be M-Rated! Never!111
Again. We probably won't see Smash Bros. get an M-rating, but hey, if we can get Bayonetta on the Wii U, anything can happen, I guess.

I don't want to see Super Smash Bayonetta where every character is wearing just enough clothes to cover nipples and crotch hair.
I think all the sexualism is better left out of Smash Bros.
