Can someone either explain the timing for this or direct me in the direction of a thread that has this information. I couldn't find anything on it.

I try to press the B button at the same time that the "shing" noise goes off, other than that I believe it's "17-20" frames after the move begins, so about 1/3 of a second.

I think your asking about a phantasm; the illusion is fox's move. Most people just mash the b button, it's not gimmicky and it rarely fails. Some people also press the b button then say a word in their head, followed by pressing again to get the timing down.

you guys do realize there's at least two different lengths to shorten it...right? so there is inherently more than one timing to acquire...

you can kind of imagine when he starts moving, and press it again when he gets to the point where you want him to stop. i think thats how i get it to work...

I don't see many Falco players attempting to utilize all the shorten lengths, it's rather impractical to learn all three timings. Do you have a consistent method?

The second part of what you quoted is the closest thing to a consistent method I have. The longer u wait gives u the longer shorten lengths I think, but its only specific times within those that you can press. Just go on fd and side b a bunch and you should be able to find them thru trial and error, and then acquire them specifically one at a time.

Edit: if the tactic is to say a word in between, use a different word for the three lengths. Is that more to your liking?

Ideally it would work, but I'm sure someone would have tried it by now and if they got it to work, spread the word (literally). I personally never figured one out

*shrug* idk. really i'd say just practice. i can't imagine it taking more than 5 minutes of side Bing to figure out when heach shorten timing is. seems much simpler than doing something like a super wavedash, and i've played samus mains that could do that whenever they so decided.

Phantasm has 4 different lengths, 3 shortened and 1 full length. I'm pretty sure the shortest has more cancel frames than the other two. I can consistently mid-distance shorten, but I often don't get the mid-distance I want among the 2nd and 3rd lengths.

I have the shortest one, and the middle one down, and obviously the full length one. I find the third one is the toughest. But yeah, I just went in training mode for like 10 minutes one time and I got it down for about 60% of the time, and then just started to try and use it in friendlies with my friends.

i'm starting to use the shortest length to fake a phantasm on to the stage so i then fall and sweetspot since you get a small amount of horizontal momentum. i can't reliably get any other length though.
