Shadows - A Brawl+ compilation combo video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijZoI3qE0_g

Created by Osi

This is the second version of the video. Lots of minor editing tweaks to the original. I hope you all enjoy this one as much, if not more! The link above is to the newest version of the video.

Codes used:
MAD
Hitstun 10% and 11.75% (I changed it to 10 for the fall rate increased)
Fall speed 1.25
No trip
No replay limit
ALC
Ledge cancel
No auto sweetspot

Hopefully my thread inspired you.

Some tips though.
Nice song choice, makes for good chill editing...
or in this case, lack-there-of.
You edited with Premiere, but still looked very Movie Maker ish. The vid was very good overall, but try syncing kills and hits to the music, and adding minor effects that don't get in the way of the video. Look at some of the examples I gave in my Thread.

Loved the combos though.

Thanks for the tips/critique! ^^

I do realize my editing pace was pretty fast for this song at points hehe. It all felt right during creation... well for the most part.

I was kinda surprised to hear the movie maker comment though... it feels pretty synced to me in most areas. I know my syncing was not just simple "lets match each hit to the downbeat", and instead I tried to sync it to the vocal ques, snare hits for ICs, and some pace changes to switch clips. There are 3 scenes that I wish I had synced a bit different, but too late now I guess. Finished at midnight half drunk and must have missed them. I'm interested on fixing my mistakes, so would you mind expanding on this on a bit more detail? It would be good for knowing what to avoid next time.

You're right I did take it light on the effects though. I only tossed in some light cross dissolves and a few fades, but you are right I could have done a lot more without it becoming cluttered still.

Intro

Intro was better than any WMM title, but it still seemed very cliche. Remember try being unique. The letters entering 1 by 1 then exiting the same way is also very cliche, and got a bit tedious (even if it's a small part of your video). That effect also didn't flow well into the intro music. Try doing a simple fade, or be creative with white glow effects. ALSO, the other effect you put on the intro (I'm guessing it's to make the clip look older etc?) is AGAIN cliche. I know I've said this a lot, but cliche things = me cringing...and I don't like cringing.

Remember, Intros are one of the most important parts of the vid. They set the stage for the whole video.

Look, a simple intro like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inCU_nQD21M can work very well. You just have to learn how to incorporate it, and what song to pick.

Nice fades though. Matched the music well, and made for a great "suspense" catcher. Usually, first clips should be one of the best in your video. You did that well.

Predicatable edit with the black and white to color though. It was also a pretty choppy edit. That half a second mistime at 0:13 was noticable to me (probably not to anyone else though). The color synced right, but the shine didn't.

6.5/10

Edits

Syncs have to be more crisp. I'm not sure if you attempted to sync through the first half, but nothing really noticable caught my eye.

2:16 was a nice transition. Okay flow on that one.
2:46 First clip I saw an attempted sync (or maybe not). It's a bit mistimed though.
3:42 There are some points here where you could of took advantage. Lots of syncing options here.
3:56 The guitar Parts are also good for syncing.
I know you can't sync everything in a Brawl video (unlike Halo), but try to make a good flow. I personally like white glow, fade, and a bit of slowmotion after the clip to enhance the video. I don't know how to describe it, but when my Combo Video is released, it should be evident. You can find some of the slowmotion at the end of a clip in a lot of Halo Montages though.

Slow motion example :

Credits were bland.

Song Choice

Liked the song. Jrock is always cool. It was a chill song, but lacked some editing potential. Not enough distinct drum beats, voice dynamics, or guitar parts to sync to. That is probably why you had a lack of syncs there. Overall a nice song choice.

8/10

Gameplay

Brawl+ at it's finest. I agree about the IC clips though.

9/10

Overall

7.5/10

TIPS:

Try to listen to your song a couple of times. Plan a few spots where you can add some effects / sync. Play around with Premiere. Edit a couple of clips here and there to some music for practice. Watch videos (I recommend a lot of Halo 3 montages), and use some ideas from there.

I'll edit this post to give you specific examples, but please check the Halo montages I put in my examples.

If I don't notice the syncing the first time I watch it, there's something wrong, which was probably the case here.

The editing has to be evident, yet calming and chill to the eye.
Right on, can't wait to hear it! ^^

I do dislike the syncing on the falcon elbow kill, the IC CG on kirby (I only synced the end of it sadly), and the end of the fox up air combo(the one with like 6 in a row).

I did notice one thing in both of the halo videos you listed that I have been a bit iffy on trying with smash. The did a lot of video speed editing, and it matches the music very well! I haven't tried editing video speed on mine at all, and in fact I've tried to stay away from it. Both those videos are amazing!

My recommendation is to not put in any IC chaingrabs. It just looks bad in a good video. You can do them in regular Brawl, so I don't think it should go into a Brawl+ Video.

This is really too true... I just started playing them and got a little to eager to put in IC footage hahaha. Just picked them up last week. Only one of the chain grab combos is brawl+ only, and it's just because of the hitstun after the CG I followed up on. I'll be sure from now on to only include shorter CGs that are followed with a combo only possible with hitstun.

What did you think of the rest of the video?

You're totally right on the old film look, it is a bit cliche. I've now changed the title too.

First off, I can not thank you enough for putting the effort to go through and detail the issues. I added some small responses in pink to your post. Very good job detailing it, and I am actually going back and editing the video now! I'm trying to take in all you posted, and the syncing details are a big help. Should have the video all done and replaced some time soon. Thanks again!

More criticism. I won't be as in depth, but I'll tell you some stuff I noticed.

First off, I liked the syncs, and MOST of the transitions. Very well done.
Main thing though, it got VERY tedious. The same effects and glows were being done over and over. Try to broaden it up a bit. Watch more of the Halo Editing. Again, I think this has something to do with the music. Not enough editing potential.

Here are some specific examples.

2:00 anticlimactic slow down (nothing special really happened), then wierd transition o_o.
3:16 and 4:24 Weird transition again. Cut that out. It doesn't look good.
2:30 Awkward Transition. You didn't include a Fade, which is fine, but the quick transition from one clip to the other didn't match the music. It left me with a wtf moment.

It synced, but like I said, got a bit tedious. Nice Re-edit though. You seem pretty new to After Effects. You can do ALOT more than glow, fade, and such. Experiment by editing before releasing another new vid. Plan ahead, and get a good chill song.

2:00 anticlimactic slow down (nothing special really happened), then wierd transition o_o. - I was really trying to draw attention in for the jiggly combo at this point.
3:16 and 4:24 Weird transition again. Cut that out. It doesn't look good. - Same as above for the falcon combo, it was one of my 3 favorites in the video. The one at 4:24... well honestly I should have left it out, and 2 was prolly enough of that. I did try to keep the camera stutters to the beat hahaha.
2:30 Awkward Transition. You didn't include a Fade, which is fine, but the quick transition from one clip to the other didn't match the music. It left me with a wtf moment. - Yea this was odd, and I knew it would be noticed. For some reason it was the only transition I didn't feel like touching. I kinda figured it looked bad, but I just liked it as a rough cut... sorry if that sounds lame.

Thanks again for the critique! Posted responses in pink again. I was a bit iffy on that camera stutter transition. I'm working on just premiere elements atm, not AE or premiere pro. I wont get those until about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks from now. Wish I had AE here...

Took a few classes in AE, so will be more at home with that when it arrives. Sadly I'm brand new to premiere elements, and man does it feel like a limited pile of trash. I'm not a big fan of any half way editing tool really, so it's no shock. Out of the ones like Vegas and elements I went with elements since normally I'm a adobe user. Sadly my PC got a nasty virus a few months back and I reformatted, so lost CS3. One of my friends is bringing me a copy after the holiday, so expect far more than these simple transitions once it arrives. Elements is still 1000x better than movie maker though. So for anyone not wishing to spend more that 100 I'd say check it out. It has plenty of premade transitions and effects.

I spent a large portion of the re-edit slowing down segments to sync and make the transfers to dramatic segments more noticeable. It helped a lot with some of the areas you noted in the first critique that were so far out of sync.

Nice. As been said though, don't go too crazy with that IC CGs (or CGs in general). CGs usually just don't look good in combo videos (especially Brawl's which tend to be very easy to pull off.

Still enjoyed it though. ^_^
