I'm having a LOT of trouble short-hopping on Project64. Is there any way to tweak the control settings to make them less sensitive? I'm sick of starting combos high in the air and getting beat down when I can't chain aerials together.

its not about sensitivity , its about releasing the button as soon as you press it
I am releasing it instantly. I'm treating it the same way I treat short-hopping on a normal controller. It's just that the controls are so sensitive that any tap on the key is treated as a normal jump.

Ant, from now on, I'm going to infract you when you say that.

It's not helpful, so either say which input plugin is good, or zip it, mister.

Yeah, I have an evil side. D=<

^ practice IS the key, but i advice not to SH with spacebar. yes its a big easy target but its due to its size it can be difficult to tap it quickly. purely opnion but i recommend a small square-y key isntead.

Your eyes happened to drift to my location, I see.
here's a good layout rather akin to typing:

a=b button
s=r trigger
d=shorthop button preferably c-up which is default home key
f=a button
e=z trigger which is for shielding and z cancel

that way you can just tap your middle finger
arrow keys for movement and tilt

After practicing for a while, you get used to the speed required to SH on keyboard. Hell, I use a laptop and I can still SH very consistently. lol I just wish the kaillera server didn't lose connection so much. I'm getting pretty good.

Make sure you are trying to short-hop with a C-button, not up.
I personally don't find it so hard. If you can SH with a controller you can SH with a keyboard.

If you want you can try my setup, its relatively easy. :p

AWDS for movement

A- Down arrow
B- left arrow
Z-up arrow
C-down-right arrow
R- Right ctrl
L- 0 ins on keypad

If you got bigger hands than mine, try movin it all to keypad. My setup makes it a lot easier for you to start SH'ed airs since its all crunched together. Makes comboing ****loads easier. Just lightly tap the key and practice jumping around with it until you get used to it. Since you're playin on keys it'll take a while to get used to it, its like starting over again.

Personally for me, I reccomend either 64 controller or keyboard. Everything else just blows hard ****.

If you have money to blow, I suggest an Xbox 360 USB controller. I had a converter for my N64 controller, and the joystick was too worn out to do anything with, so I just borrowed a friend's controller. It feels great, and I can SH pretty easily with it. Just set it up like a 64 controller, and you'll barely notice a difference.
