Some of us (SOME of us.) are looking forward to knowing the full roster at the Japanese release date. However, we're going to be getting a lot of rumors, misunderstandings, and flat-out lies during that, for various reasons: everyone searching and discussing at once, malicious users, and ambiguous/difficult unlock methods (such as the 20 hours requirement for Mewtwo in Melee - we will not know the full roster on release day if there's a requirement like that.)

I want to know how we're going to separate fact from fiction and when we're going to be able to safely get the complete truth.

Quality camera screenshots. Youtube videos showing live gameplay. Dojo content reveals. Once the game is out, it will become far harder for rumors and leaks to take hold since there will be a way to satisfy demand for evidence.

And besides, if it's only 20 hours to unlock Mewtwo, or 10 to unlock Sonic, we'll definitely have those first-day. I imagine at least SOMEONE will stay up all night.

Best way to sort the real from the fake? Wait a bit longer, as annoying as it is. I remember when all the brawl info started falling when a copy was leaked. Lots of fake stuff was posted as well, but after a day or two it was clear which info was fake and which wasn't.

Because honestly, when the leaks start falling, when the dojo isn't updating, and there's hardly and videos up, it can be really hard to tell the lies from the real info.

I'll be getting the game on release here in Japan and I'll probably be posting all my findings, along with probably many other folks who have absolutely no reason to lie or pull your leg.

I have absolutely nothing to gain by wasting my and your time making fake screenshots and silly stories about all my findings and I guarantee I'm not the only one who feels this way.

A couple mods who live in the Japan are getting the game early. Currently we're working on a plan to be able to sort through the info as it comes; most likely as a Discovery thread on the News Forum.

Not believing in extremely shaky photos is a good start. Ideally, you should only believe what two or more trustworthy sources report. For example, when there are Pokémon leaks or news coming from the Japanese version being released earlier, people often wait for Joe (owner of the Serebii site) to update his site with info, since he is trustworthy, even if said news are reporter by other sources like PokéBeach before. Since there is no Serebii for Smash Bros, we should wait for the mods "---" mentioned in the previous post, to bring news to us.

Let me just say, I am incredibly jealous of you mods and other people in Japan, both for getting the game early, and being in Japan.

I wonder how much it would set me back to travel to Japan on the launch date, buy the copy, (and a Japanese 3ds because region locking) , and travel back, lol.

It's so tempting to just go to Japan and get the game! How come Japan gets the game early and we get it a month later? I mean I want a polished game and all, but the wait is killing me!

Anyone think the Japanese (or American) Sm4sh site will be updated with all of the characters when the game gets released? That would at least give us an official site to go to if we want to avoid people misinforming us.

I don't think so, it wasn't like that for brawl. There were 12 character (4 newcomers) not announced by Brawl's Japanese release, if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I remember that from Brawl, just hoping they update it with mystery characters again like on the Brawl site

I don't know if they'll do it in the same mystery style, be Sakurai has definitely said that he doesn't like spoilers. I personally hope they do something like that again as well, it would be cool.

I'm sure that when the game releases, there will be a thread so that the users don't have to see leaks. Then, I guess everyone will talk and debate about the characters' inclusion to the game...which means character speculation is coming to an end, but DLC is still a possibility.

As long as those of us who want to be spoiled have access to it, no problem.

Though, seeing as even Luigi is already revealed, I don't think they're trying to keep the roster secret (as if he wouldn't return, but you know what I mean). Maybe some other things, though.

Well, it's not planned, just a potential route. I personally hope it'll be either pure cosmetics (alt costumes and the like), or levels of extra content rivaling the Expansion Packs of old. None of this "Here pay $5 for one character and three maps" stuff.

Though really I'd rather they just skip DLC alltogether. Amiibo should be able to make up for that.

Yeah, I think the developers want to make the games as complete as possible, so if there's no DLC, then character speculation is no more and then comes....competitiveness?

I'd rather them have dlc characters, say at 2-5$ and the amiibo for them which also has their dlc, and if you buy the amiibo of the dlc character you get them ingame, and at a discount since you arent buying the dlc and amiibo separately. It also solves the problem for people with no internet

Well, he also said that he revealed luigi because it was the year of luigi.

We still have yet to see 15 Brawl vets. Most people are assuming snake, ivy, and squirtle are cut, but that's still 12 more characters, plus we know there is at least one more newcomer left, and probably more than that.

So a low estimate is 15 more character reveals. Well, there are less than 8 weeks until the game's release in japan. So unless we get 2 characters revealed a week, every week until release, I think there are going to be characters announced after release.

Yea, I agree. I'm just not sure if the currently-shown characters (bar Luigi) are to be assumed default, or assumed to share their status from past games. My friends and I are actually having a just-for-fun prediction contest for roster status. The biggest oddballs are Marth and Captain Falcon, since Marth is now boxart and Cfalc hasn't been consistent in past games.

You know you can just import a Japanese 3DS now (from wherever you are) and download it from the e-shop when it releases...you don't have to go to Japan.

Hopefully character speculation and stuff like that comes to an end with the release of Smash Bros. 3DS. I don't think there will be bugs or glitches in the game. It's a Nintendo game after all, so it'll most likely be bug-free. DLC shouldn't be a la Capcom in which the data is already in the cartridge and you have to buy the thing to get it. I think DLC for both games will come out after the Wii U version's release, but who knows?

If there is DLC, right? I mean, we only speculate about DLC because of the Gematsu leak, but it was proven to be unreliable. Either way, if there is DLC, I suppose it will come only in 2015, a few months after the Wii U version is released. I am certainly looking forward for it.

Ah, to me, shaving off a month's wait isn't worth losing more than a thousand dollar investment I already have in eShop titles.

Along with the game not being in English. There's that, too.

Yeah, that's what I mean. The games should feel complete when released, so they wouldn't need DLC at that time, but it's up to Sakurai and Nintendo for the DLC stuff. If something interesting pops up as DLC, then I'll look forward to it as well.

This... this is genius. But still too much $$$ to justify the early release xD. I'd rather spend the money on a PS4/Destiny.

Maybe he wants to use this opportunity to visit Japan?
As much as I'd kill for this opportunity the money isn't there, nor the time. S'much as I love college, why can't they give me the week off for videogames :(

Other than waiting for a trusted source like the mods here to confirm it, video footage is the next safest, but multiple clear screenshots aren't too bad. Of course, most of the earliest real and fake leaks are text and just take time to sort out.
