Seperate The Real Sonic Fans From Fans of Top Tier

I've been saying the same thing about finding out my main in Brawl for a while now: I'm going to main my favorite character and not base it on tiers at all. I've been saying pretty much forever that I want to main Sonic if he's in it, since before Melee was even out (with only one exception: I would main knuckles before Sonic), and now hes confirmed so I couldn't be happier. I'm also glad to see that he looks like a great character, however this brings a new problem.

A lot of people are seeing Sonic as being so extremely good, and cheap in many ways, and want to main him thinking he's going to be one of the best characters. This makes people think that the people maining Sonic main him for his tier, and not if they like him or not. Look at GimpyFish, he likes Bowser, so he mains him. No one else likes to play as Bowser because of his tier so with so few players, Gimpy is known for maining him because he likes him. This is also in the case of Marth, where so many people main him for how good he is, that true fans of the series like Lord Knight and Emblem Lord get lost in the mix.

I'm one of the biggest Sonic fans, and I want people to know that I'm not just playing him for his tier (unless he somehow becomes mid-bottom). We need user bars or something that say something like "Original Sonic Supporter" and "Sonic Supporter After 10/10" lol

And about you're topic. Alot of characters that looked really good offhand in Melee, ended up being nowhere near as good as people thought. Examples: Roy, Mewtwo.

So, the Blue Blur is fast. Big deal. Besides, there are ways to stop speedy characters in their tracks. Turtling and baiting your speedy opponent works wonders---especially if they whiff a critical attack and are left open to being punished by your counterattack.

The game isn't even out yet, man. Don't jump the gun. It's like saying Fox got his happy *** nerfed just because he popped up on an update. Same can be said about him vice-versa.

I'm gonna play Sonic because I like him. It's the same reason why I picked Sheik in Melee. I didn't pick her because she was broken; I picked her because I like the way the potato plays and I enjoyed "its" small (but albeit crucial) role in OoT. Yeah, the way she plays is "easy mode" to some Smashers and yeah, some Zelda purists argue that Sheik was useless to the canon. The point is that "it" looks cool, had an interesting role, and fit my playstyle.

And personally, I think this thread has the potential to be a cesspool for flame wars. Or I could be wrong.

Do you know how many people play Peach in melee? ALOT. I even main peach in melee.
Do you think all those people really love Peach and just wanted to play her hands down before getting the game? Definitely not.

BUT you must realize that people love her not because of who she is(most of the time), they love her because of her fighting style. She has the ability to float and has a very nice array of moves. People don't just look at her spot at the tier list and say "Oh I'm going to main Peach, she's high on the tier list", they play her because she has such a unique playstyle that its extremely fun to play as her. And the fact that she's great just adds on to that fact. If she was lower tier though, many of those people would still main her just because she is so god **** unique.

But not everyone though. Scroll down on thread list and look for the "who do you want to main in melee poll". Only about 3 people want to remain being Peach because they want to move on from her. But also realize that that's because they see someone else that's new and equally as unique to conpensate.

I grew up playing sonic, so for me it's always been Sonic > Mario. In the past couple years they have put sonic in some crappy excuses for a game (SONIC RYDERS WTF WAS DAT ****?!?!)
anyways, it's good to finally see him in a good game. He has been LONG overdue for one.
Regardless of tier Sonic will be my main solely due to the fact he was my favorite video game character growing up.

Another point well-taken, Exorcist. The vast majority of players are very much like that. Personally, I've never been a big Peach fan outside of Smash games (not a real big fan of the Marioverse to begin with, except for a couple of gems). However, I love Melee Peach. She's one of my secondaries. Turnips, floating, and the big forward throw of doom---three examples of why I love her so **** much. Nobody else can do that, y'know?

So, yeah, even though I pick my characters based on how much I love them personally I do consider the aesthetic value as well. And when I say "aesthetic," I don't mean tiers.

that's not to say there won't be experts that will play him, property, there will just be multitudes of very bad players, and yes, sorry to say, they WILL make Sonic look bad (this is assuming that fanboys' forum posting behavior is an accurate indicator of their playing skill, which it probably is) This is the group of people I assume you were referring to as "Sonic fans after 10/10/07"...

This is magnified even more if he really does turn out to be "top tier" (if you believe in such things) since the typical noob mentality is that they should play as whoever is "top tier" thinking that it will allow them to win easily.

Honestly, playing online, I don't see myself getting beaten by Sonic very often, even if he is a really good character, considering the type of person who i predict is playing the character.

Ironically, what all this means is that, if you are really a true fan of Sonic and want to both master him and allow him to be seen for as good as he really is, then your greatest opponents... will be other people that play Sonic

Well said, though I'm inclined to believe that if Peach were lower on the Tier list or her moves eg. Down smash were UBER Nerf'd I doubt many people would play her.

That on the other hand seems to be the case very true. People love like, not for his moves but for that character and in general play (being majority of the play that goes on) he would easily be one of the more heavily used character in Melee as he will be in Brawl.

You're kidding right? You realize that I've played most of the major Sonic games since StH1 (on the Genesis, not the 360) watched Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.. Sonic SatAM.. Sonic X and even the strangely interesting yet completely horrible Sonic Underground.. have plushies of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.. etc. etc. etc. Archie Comics etc. etc. so on so forth...

Yet, somehow by not posting about "Sonic in Brawl" just because I don't post often.. I would, by your standards, be "not a real Sonic fan." It's not your place to judge such a thing. Just fight it out and see who the real Brawl fan is. That's the only thing you can really determine about anonymous people in a fighting game.

Moving on... I think there are a number of Sonic players would want to beat up the lesser Sonics who fail to do justice to his name. I say this because I often see the sentiment in many posts.. perhaps this is because we've had to put up with so many lesser Sonic games who, also, fail to do justice to his name..

People think he looks good? All we've seen so far is a souped up Rollout. And Rollout sucks. Fast Running speed? I heard Pichu can run pretty fast, he must be top tie- wait a minute.

We have no way of judging tiers at this point, even though some specials may suck (Lol peanuts), their A moves may be godly. Or vice versa.

It's just your opinion and all.. But da'hm! Sonic Riders was an awesome game and it's even getting a sequel. I very much enjoyed Rider's and I unlocked everyone and everything, it provided countless hours of entertainment.

I agree with Chibo on some points, and some points totally not, I'd also hate people if they went to play Fox ONLY because he's high tier, but it's hard to tell the difference between a Fox lover and a person who wants to win tournaments more easily...but I don't mind those people really, cause I don't know anyone who choses a high-tier characters JUST because they are high-tier...

Lol just because you like the series doesnt mean you should main someone, for example. In melee i use CF, but my favorite series is metroid. I will main anyone who turns out good, i dont care if its kirby or if its zelda, if the character can get the job done effeciently and at a speed i like i will pick that character, if i see that im better with another character il just switch, its that simple. Yes you can main anyone in melee but if you main a character like pichu unless you are Chu Dat you will lose.

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with playing a character just because they are top tier. BTW I do think Sonic will be top tier. His mobility, speed, and that dive kick look great. I grew up on Sonic so I love him, therefore I will main him. In SSBM Marth and Roy sparked my interest in the FE series and then I set out to play some of them and learn more about the series. After learning more about thier games I decided to main Marth not only because his game's were more popular and influential in the series then Roy's was, but also because I could tell that Marth was far better then Roy even when I knew nothing of advanced gameplay.

What I'm saying is that even a true fan of a series may change thier character because they want to win or they want to reach greater heights.

Exhibit B: How many people here have actually played the ICe CLimbers' game and enjoyed it. Their game was a pretty mediocre experience. However, I main IC because I enjoy how they play. I love desynching. It's fun as hell. And they're so cute!! ^_^

I was always a big sonic fan(well, 16-bit era sonic. Not so much post-SA2.) so I definitely plan on giving him a shot. If I enjoy playing him more than I enjoy the ICe Climbers, I'll main him. Hell, he'll probably replace GaW as my main behind IC since I've gotten no indication as to whether GaW will be in or not

However, I understand where you are coming from. MY roommate has always been vocal about his dislike for Sonic to be in Brawl before Megaman. But upon seeing the trailer yesterday, he was like, "He's gonna be one of my mains. He looks so broken.". I was like WTF? Don't get me wrong, he is an old-school sonic fan too. I guess his recent games made my roommate lose faith though.

It's not cut and dry either way. You have fanboys/girls that will play Sonic for being Sonic. You also have people that will play him for him being top-tier. You also have those low-tier whores that will play him because he is low-tier and they want to make some kind of statement(if he is low-tier). And then you have other who will play him because they enjoy the way he plays. Funny stuff. I was never a huge pokemon fan but I still secondary Mewtwo. I've never even played an Earthbound and Ness is one of my mains. Play who you play best with. Don't play because you're a fanboy/girl, whether it be of the character or of tiers.

The ONLY way that I would main a character based on my sheer fanboyism for the game would be if SOMEHOW, Nintendo got Treasure to put Gunstar Red, Blue or Green into Smash Bros. Either that or Sega decided to throw Gum from Jet Grind Radio or Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue. Hell, I'd main Lip (from Panel de Pon) if Nintendo decided to toss her in. Those characters are all from my favorite games of all time so my fanboyism would definitely blind me and make me play them non-stop.
