SD Card Uses

This topic doesn't have a thread.. shockingly.
You know that little SD Card slot thing in front of the Wii?
Well it could come to some good use with Brawl.

-Some of my ideas-

1. Music- Nintendo's Excite Truck for the Wii used the SD Card slot for music. It allowed players to import their own tracks while racing. The same idea could work well with Brawl.. and maybe even make the feature more customizable. It could allow players to add alternate music for their favorite stages. The music customization menu can be setup with the list of unlocked stages. Players select the stage, go into their SD Card and select a MP3 of their choosing. This could be very cool because some may want to hear a remix from overclocked in the game.. or even the System of a Down Legend of Zelda song.

2. Personal Photos - Photos stored on the SD Card slot could be imported. It would be cool to see a picture of one of your friends or yourself etc. in a stage's background or on a item. Maybe even a Mii stage? or a Gameboy camera stage that converts your photos into black and white pixels? That would be cool.

3. Personal Video - Same as the personal photos. Though this might be going too far.

4. Screen Shots - This is a really REALLY good way of taking screen shots now. Instead of just on the Wii's internal flash memory, players can save their 480p shots on the SD Card. This allows players to post their pictures right on the internet. I can really see this happening over anything else I mention.

5. Updates/Downloadable Content - This is a possibility. The Wii could read right from the card and add new updated content for the game. A gigabite or even 256mbs of storage is a good amount to add new stages, items, trophies, assist trophies, and even characters. They could even have downloadable clones.. like Dr. Mario or new costumes.

6. Custom Content- This might be far fetched, but it doesn't mean it isn't possible. Nintendo might take notice of how the Sony is doing "Game 3.0" idea and release a stage making tool for the PC. This stage making tool could limit players in making small stages and share them with friends. They can import their own graphics, select the music to play, and so on.

-iankobe's idea-

7. Replays- Saving replay video to look over later could be possible. Player one could pause the game and save a 1-3 minute clip on the SD Card. It might even be possible to save it into a video format.. but that might be unlikely because it could stress out the wii hardware and the video format might be too large.

I've always think that recording matches would be cool to be one of the function on brawl by using the SD card.

Recording video might be possible.. though the problem is what format will it record to?
AVI? God I hope not.. it would be too large of a file.
MPG? possible..
WMV? Maybe.. but unlikely since Microsoft owns the format.

The only way I can see it working if you can save 'Replays' to look over later. It may be possible to convert it to a video format, though doing that takes time frame by frame and could put too much stress on Wii. But still it would be cool.

OMG yes! I agree with EVERYTHANG!!!!

Seriously, this is a friggin awesome idea and Sakurai would be divine if he implemented those ideas. (especially the stage builder. I love making my own stages in any game)

Well if Mega Man Legends for the PSP can do it.. It don't see why Brawl cannot.
Adding a stage maker would lead to more endless playability.
Mega Man Legends also allowed player to upload their custom maps.. The same could be done for Brawl.
Mega Man Legends even had downloadable content.. new costumes for the character 'Roll' and stage making texture sets..

Eh... I could see this maybe for saving replays or screenshots. I do not like the idea of replacing the game's orchestrated Nintendo-themed music with something by Aerosmith, and I don't think the game's creators would be crazy about that idea either. I vote "no" on just about all of those ideas, especially the DLC one.

Britain, glaring at you **** yanks.
You could use mp4 format for movies?

I like the music idea; Slipknot Blasting out as you kill Master Hand, and The Fratellis bopping along as you recover from a 4 player Brawl. That would be awesome.

The pictures would be cool, but I cant see what they would be used for, other than for backgrounds on the menu.

I guess it depends who you are.. yeah the Brawl music will be awesome as hell and there is no reason at all not to hear it.. but a adding a feature to play your own music would still be a extra feature players might really enjoy.

I suppose... my understanding is that developers don't really like it though. It may have been a rumor, but I heard of a game developer commenting on the XBox's ability to let you store your own music to play during games (this was back when it was still new), saying something to the effect of "well why the hell should we bother composing music for these games if nobody's going to listen to it?"

Besides, if I wanted to do that, I'd just hook up my Airport Express and pipe music from my desktop computer into my living room. There's no way an SD card is going to hold 60 GB of music.

i like the music and video recording ideas. the latter could be a big plus for tourneys and friendlies if you have a card with enough memory for videos.

I wouldn't see it happening, just because of the music thing. I mean, the biggest use of it would most likely be to have your music in the game, just like in Excite truck.
If Sakurai wanted you to put your own music in the game, he wouldn't have hired such a variety of musicians from different games and such.

Nintendo could create their own custom format for videos that can only be viewed by Brawl.

To give you a example, play Starcraft or Warcraft 3, the games can extend to up for several hours and the replay file will be small. A 3 minute match is only 25 KB, thing is they can only be viewed in the replay section of Starcraft/Warcraft3. Though would Nintendo go that far?

That is quite a list of composers. I'd love to be able to get a decent Smash Movie recorded every so often (You know, as far as video quality) but I was thinking about an extra for the Gamecube Memory Card as well. Like a special surprise if you have data from Melee on a Cube card. Nothing essential to the game, just a little bonus like a special costume for someone or a trophy. But I think an SD card could be used for keeping name settings too (Sakurai-sensei said names would be important on this one after all.)

The uses I am particularly fond of [which has been discussed long ago, although SDs were rarely mentioned, so I can see if it didn't come up in the search] are video and screenshots. I lack recording equipment, so it would be awesome just to save a video in the SD then upload it to the internet to show off your match or ask for match tips. I'd also like if online matches could also be recorded, but maybe that's pushing it.

More videos of pro matches would be up on the internet that way, and many could have better quality.

Could we like.. have the "Replay log"(The one that records all the moves etc.) put into the SD card. Then Nintendo releases a program on the computer that takes the data and turns it into a video?.. Hmm that would be a pretty big program to distribute.. Maybe not..

Stage creation...plz!!!

I could only imagine the crazy (or serious) stages people would create. But I could also go for the recording matches. There's been some crazy stuff my friends and I have done in the game and we'd love to show it off, just to get a few laughs.

I'm a bit of a purist, and i think the video recording and custom soundtrack idea shouldn't happen. Most likely it won't, but even so I can't really imagine playing a Zelda-themed level without that Ocarina of Time medley. As for video recording, I love watching the smash videos on Google Video, but I don't think Nintendo would never implement such a thing. It's best to just run it through a recording device, because even if Nintendo DID include that feature, I'm sure it wold have some limitations. The only thing that I could realistically envision Nintendo doing is enabling you to save replays that are only viewable in-game, that you can exchange with your friends over wi-fi.

But regardless, we don't need bells and whistles. Just wi-fi. That's what the devs should be focusing on.
