I have a physical disability, and I have a problem. Okay, so I have this English teacher, who just got back from maternity leave this semester. I can tell by the way she responds to my answers in class that just she thinks because I'm disabled, I'm stupid. I've had teachers like this before, but it hasn't been this extreme because I've been able to prove them wrong over the course of the semester...problem is with this piece of work, I only have two weeks. What should I do? I'm thinking of complaining to my teacher, but I'm just not sure.

well heck,
thats the only thing you CAN do...

but when you complain,

do it in the most literate way possible..
impress her.
an english teacher loves nothing more than to see his/her students express them selves with the upmost respect.

If a teacher is treating you this way then you should go to a counselor. I have had a similar problem to yours with my teachers giving me bad looks and giving hateful answers just because I didn't go by todays dress code. I went to a counselor to discuss my problem and she did something to change the opinions of the teachers. You should try and do the same.

Be sure to contact her superior, because what she is doing is wrong and dont think because you are telling you are doing wrong. She has nothing to lose and she might fail you if you confront her because of spite. Please go to her superior or contact the board of education.

Just out of curiosity, what is your disability?

Is it a physical disability that makes you appear mentally disabled, such as not being able to control the muscles in your face or something? Or are you just in a wheelchair, which usually has no effect on one's perceived intelligence?

Either way, I am very disappointed in your teacher. As a teaching professional, she should know to not let what are very ill-founded prejudices affect her opinion of students.

I'm not kidding at all, EVERY single piece of homework or project or final that didn't have computer code in it, I did the night before at the last minute.

I don't understand you. You have to speak on terms that profess attitude, charisma, and most of all confidence. Tell your teacher, "If you're only givin' me two weeks to do this, it's gonna be total crap, don't expect something good ****it. I got **** to do!"

If you're 100% honest then any teacher that is humane will level with you.

Probably sleeping or in school.. but always in GA
don't try to prove her wrong, that's not good. Just be yourself. If se thinks you're stupid that is her problem. Some teachers are just weird..

If she is like mocking you in front of the class or being mean about it, you can go to a counselor.. Or call her out for it, which is more fun. Be like "Hey, why are you doing this? Treating me like I'm stupid?" And see what she says. Of course, that might be bad..

It does. An even better measure of intelligence is posts per day.

I'm pretty much smarter than any 3 of you put together, as you can see.

I'm sorry, Jammer, but someone has to tell you. You post waaay too much, and it's really annoying.

Don't get me wrong-- you don't spam or anything-- it's just that about 2/3 of your 25 posts per day are useless, time wasting posts that don't contribute anything to conversation. And to accomplish a feature like that, Jammer, is just an amazing feature of it's own. Terrible, but amazing.

To reiterate:
YOU POST A LOT, AND IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU SHOULD BRAG ABOUT.

Do the Ackermann function with Graham's Number. This may take you several (hundred million) lifetimes and yet more space on paper. So instead, write a very well written essay on how physically, but not mentally, disabled students are often overlooked by society, despite being unhindered mentally (cough Steven Hawking cough).

Well, I'd say that Stephen Hawking is a bad example of an "overlooked" person, considering his incredibly standing in the field of science and even the public, with his record-breaking best-seller "A Brief History of Time".

I'm actually doing a research paper for school about how schools are horrible for gifted children with mental disabilities, such as myself (ADD and another very strange learning disability). Doing this paper has really opened my eyes, so I agree with Paranoid_Android that noftfomearth should think about fitting in his version of that paper somewhere.

Also, can anyone say A(g64,g64)?

It's just two weeks. Are you sure it really matters that much? It's impossible to make everybody have exactly the same opinion of you. That's a fact of life. Do your best, sure, but don't make it a top priority.

I'm in a walker dude, so no, it has NOTHING to do with my intelligence

I don't think I can stand of the "....Well that's....good." followed by the shify eyes routine for every f'ing answer that I give.

Heh, I know it has nothing to do with your intelligence. I was just wondering if your disability made you appear mentally disabled, because that would give a (bad) explanation for why your teacher thinks you're dumb. But it seems like it doesn't make you appear stupid, so I can't see why your teacher would think you're slow, other than she's stupid (and prejudiced).

For example, I had a friend who couldn't control his face muscles correctly. He constantly had this weird smile on his face, and it made him look mentally disabled, even though he was about average in intelligence.

How's that gonna help his grade?

I'm telling you, if your problem is the teacher's outrageous assignment, THEN GO. GO and tell the teacher that the assignment is outrageous. If you feel like you should complain, they'll think you're
a. whiny
b. annoying

Be "HONEST" and not "complainy".
Say, "This is not enough time to finish this task because I have a life unlike you, a teacher"
Don't say something that gives them a guilt trip or highlights something they don't care about.

He wasn't.
Thank you.

After some exasperating private messaging, Zapdos still thinks I was being mean.

I'm posting here because you seem to have private messaging turned off, notftofmearth.

Notftofmearth, if I came across as insensitive or cruel, please know I wasn't being either of those things. I wasn't able to explain to Zapdos what I was saying, but maybe I could show you, if you also took my posts the wrong way:

I understand that asking if your physical disability makes you look mentally disabled could be construed as rude. The reason I asked, however, is because I had a friend whose physical disability made him appear mentally disabled. This always gave him trouble. People would talk loudly and slowly to him, and the teachers would treat him as less intelligent than he was, all because he appeared mentally disabled (he had the typical Down's Syndrome face).

I wanted to know if you were in a similar situation. As it turns out, you are not, because there is, as far as I can tell, no mental disability stigma associated with using a walker.

I promise I wasn't calling you dumb. I remember you saying that you were very smart ("not a prodigy", though--remember), and I believed you.

I don't even know if this post was necessary, because I don't know if you were offended or not, notftofmearth, although you appeared to be. I apologize for the confusion.

No, I didn't think you were rude, so if it seemed that way I'm sorry. In fact, I applaud you! A lot of people beat around the bush whilst trying not to offend me when they ask questions about my disability, which makes it even more awkward. Sub in this class for the last 2 times WOOT! But that ***** wrote a letter to all of us, giving homework even though while she had a considerably painful soar throat.

This is how you seperate normal people from teachers ladies and gentlemen.

Excellent. A certain member of the boards was really making me feel that I somehow said something horrible.

And yeah, it annoys me too when people get quiet or super sensitive about disabilities. They think they're being nice, but they don't understand that when you live with it every day of your life, it's just something you deal with.

There's a deaf person who used to go to my church. He was saying how he doesn't even consider his deafness a disability. He said he's Deaf (with a capital D), not deaf, which means that he's part of another culture where there's no need for hearing. Seriously, Deaf people do just fine, but hearing people seem to think that we should feel sorry for them.

Another question, I guess: How long have you had your disability? Was it from birth? Because I'm guessing you'd be less discomforted by it if it's the only thing you've ever known, as opposed to it happening to you while you watch.

Also, I realize that while it's annoying to "beat around the bush" about disabilities, it's even more annoying for someone to think that your disability defines you. So I understand if I offend you by talking to you about your disability, and nothing else, really. But you have to understand: This is fascinating stuff to me.

Here's a great example of my teacher at work
Teacher: Why did Huck Finn put a snake in Jim's (slave) bed?
Me: In the time period that the book takes place, whites looked down on African American people, so Huck thought it was OK to mess around with Jim.
Teacher: Actually I was looking for Huck doesn't treat Jim like a human being.

Is that not the same answer to you?

The ***** hates me :(

Edit: Jammer, I've had my disability for my entire life, and during that entire time, I haven't felt so terribly about it. I mean there've been people that have talked to me slow and stuff but this lady makes me feel like crap

It's still going on, huh?

(And yes, that is the same answer. Well, yours was more elaborate than hers.)

I'm really annoyed that this is happening to you.

Have you talked to her? If you don't talk to her about it, at least talk to a guidance counselor. If you don't want your counselor to tell your teacher about your feelings, they won't, but I think that might be a good idea.

But don't just take it for the whole year. This is unfair and it should be stopped.

I talked to my counselor, and she just played it off and said she was probably having a rough day. I told her that her behavior is uncalled for demeaning. She said, "That's how I am with everybody."
I shruged my shoulders and said, "That's unfortunate for you."

I talked to my counselor and I do believe she might have it rough, but if the behavior continues I WILL start a campaign against her. I'd have a lot of supporters as well, everyone hates her.

(Goes into deep thought) Well....she would miss class....NO NO NO! Although I really am resisting the urge to do that, I can think of much more painfull MAKE MY CELL PHONE RING A GAZILLION TIMES BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Is it possible for your guardian or you to write an articulate letter to her superior( principal, superintendant, school counsel, i really dont know how things work in canada) and let them know because it (What she is doing is representing a clear bias to those that may be handicap) is wrong and deserves to be penalized for her actions.
