My school got a grant from the state. Usually, this would be a good thing.

But my school wants to update our computers. Yeah, there isn't anything wrong with that.
The only problem is that we are switching my first period's computer lab into a Macintosh computer lab. It's going to suck (no offense to mac users, I just don't like it).
Also, most of our other computers are also getting upgraded, except they are going to run on Linux now. Another negative for me.

What do you use?

We in school already have those and to be honest, the computers are **** IMO (only IMO, so calm down). I pity you... u_u I don't have any experience with Linux, but I must say that I use Windows Vista, unfortunately. It's nice and shiny, but it doesn't serve much purpose (yet), I'd rather have my old XP back

At home I have 3 macs because I'm a mac user, and at school I use PCs. I can use both through, I don't really mind which kind of computer I use.

Besides, you should be happy that your school is upgrading your computers, my high school is really poor and bad compared to the other high school (our rivals) down the street from us. Our computers are laggy, they freeze like no tomorrow and we use good ol' Internet Explorer (yah!!!!!). I wish that our school would get at least, average computers...

Your school is switching to Linux?

Totally, completely, awesome.

The faster we get out of the clutches of Microsoft's anti-feature-filled operating systems, the faster we'll all be happy. Wait until you try Linux, my friend. It's better than Vista in, seriously, every single way except a slight lack of games, and it's free.

Macs, too? Meh, okay. Not as cool as Linux.

Until Linux can play games, I have no interest in it whatsoever.

As for Macs? I guess if you want to pay a lot of money for incompatibility issues, go for it. I've had friends who had issues just from an iPod, much less a Mac.

Thank god for BootCamp so I can play Windows-only games and run Windows-only applications.

qft.
There's a reason MS has such a big market share: their stuff works and is easy to use. Technical people can whine all they want, but most of the problems with Windows systems will not be apparent to the average user. Plus, EVERY game is on Windows. Plus plus, Apple are evil: they overcharge for everything and people have to pay it. Lame.

My computer already has Macs too =[
My teacher really tries to "convert" people into Mac users.
It was really wierd to me at first, but I got used to it.
It's not really that bad, but I've just used Microsoft XP for so long.

You'd be surprised. With all free software (Wine), you can play many games, including World of Warcraft and Half-Life 2, with little or no problems on Linux. Many games also have Linux versions; for example, Quake 4 and Doom 3.

And Linux has plenty of good, free games for itself.

Of course, there are going to be some games you want to play that you won't be able to. For me, the fact that Linux is so much better than Windows in practically every aspect means that I deal with it. Or, I just boot into XP once in a while to play a game.

I can truly, honestly say that my Ubuntu installation is easier to use than the XP I have on the same computer, in almost every single way.

It took 20 minutes to install, and I could surf the internet and do anything else while installing.

Most things I want to download and install (for free, too) take three clicks--and I never even have to open up a web browser. That's probably the thing I like the most.

You practically never have to restart to install updates or anything.

And, if you own Vista, you are definitely going to get frustrated with it when High Definition content becomes mainstream. You know the Zune, right, and how much it sucks because it's so restrictive? How would you like it if your operating system were like that, but worse?

why are linux users so **** adamant about their OS?
it's really nothing special..
Have you actually tried it recently?

Seriously, just go to Ubuntu.com, download Gutsy Gibbon, and try out the LiveCD (no installation required). You will be very surprised, I reckon. There's nothing to lose, and you might just decide you don't need to pay Microsoft for their shoddy operating systems anymore.

Everybody is complaining that Macs can't play games.

If you'll excuse me asking, aren't these school computers? I wasn't aware that game playing was a priority for school computers.

My beginning programming class has computers with windows. They're okay. My teacher tho...just loves macs. Every so often he'll show videos about Apple and say how great they are. He even brags about his Macbook. -_-

Mediocre, did you expect a computer thread to NOT become an OS war? >_>
I dunno... it just seems like Linux is too much trouble for too little gain. You really should know what you're doing if you want to mess around with it, and if you don't, Windows is far more mainstream and supported. I don't want to spend a while trying to fix something when I don't even know what's going on, and having to find instructions and junk for the right distro is kind of a pain. I know, because a friend of mine got a bunch of people to switch to Linux at my school. Now they can't use the networked printers: in fact, they can't boot to Windows well at all. Too much hassle for too little reward, especially when I don't care about HD stuff nor do I use Vista.

Heh, the war started with me.

Something that bothers me is that the thread creator said he was upset about the school using Linux computers when it sounds like he's never even tried using Linux.

Here's a hint, guys: If your school is switching to Linux, there won't be any problems with getting the printers to work. Everything will be set up perfectly. You won't have any problems. You won't need to get into the guts of the computer to fix things. In fact, you won't be able to, because it is much easier to keep people from doing unauthorized actions in Linux than it is in Windows.

I mean, my school has like 3 guys on call all day fixing computer problems and setting things up on our Windows computers. Three Linux hackers will have no problem keeping things running in tip-top shape, considering how administrator-friendly Linux is (much more so than Windows).

Also, Zink, to get network printers working takes a bit of work in both Linux and Windows. You have to point the printer at the correct IP and, depending on the system they're using, do some crazy stuff. The people who can't print should ask the computer technicians for the information that was put into all the Windows machines to get it to work.

And it is almost always a piece of cake to boot into Windows after you install Linux. I can't imagine what problem they could be having.
