Hey guys, myself, ICYDP, and RBNuke are looking at throwing a Brawl tourney on August 2nd in the San Diego/Rancho Bernardo area. I'm mainly gauging interest right now, but here's the idea: A door fee ($3-$5, depending) is paid for entry in the tournament, on top of standard $5/$10 for singles/doubles entry (similar to Nexus). That, as well as any proceeds from drinks/foodstuffs (again, think Nexus) would go to a community charity (we're currently looking at RB United, a 501(c) non-profit that's working to help people who were left in need post-last year's wildfires). The nice thing is, it looks like we could potentially get a good space for free, so more proceeds for the donation. It would otherwise be like any other tournament, but it would be supporting a great cause. I'm throwing this out here fairly early to judge interest, as coordinating with RBU will take some work. I figured, if it's a success, we could certainly host more (and maybe do different charities in the future, such as Child's Play, etc.) I figure, whatever amount we can raise (no matter how small) will help at least a little.

So what do you guys think? Brawling for a cause? Good idea/doomed to failure? Post any questions/suggestions here!

EDIT the second: Definitely not happening today (8/2/08). We're looking at a significantly larger, significantly later tournament (October) that would do a lot more to benefit the fire families. I'll keep details posted, watch this space and all that :p

I think it's a good idea. If anything it's just another excuse to play or another excuse to help people that lost soooo much from the fires. Good stuff.

I'd go. Wildfires are big trouble for my family because we board a horse out in East County.

Friends of mine have lost houses too. =/

I like the idea a lot. =)

Heh, yeah, I actually got hit by the '03 fires, so my family knows what that experience is like. I figured the SoCal community might see the cause as a good one, as we've all had to go through at least the anxiety that comes with the fires, and everyone was at least in some way (directly or indirectly) affected by the fire. Glad to hear you guys think it's a good idea, I'll try to nail down some details and keep you posted (no pun intended).

PS: As for helping, Hall, we appreciate the offer... Depending on how big this thing ends up being, we might just take you up on that. Definitely check back here in the next couple days (we'll be finding out for sure whether or not we have a venue for the 2nd probably by Monday, I've already contacted the NPO and they seem pretty psyched...), I'll probably post a formal listing once we for sure have a reservation and I've checked out the location and made sure it'll work. Watch this space!

Of course of course. She's pretty old now though, I can't ride her anymore. ;p (Though my mom may take in another one that needs an owner.)

My initial contact at one of the churches who has connections to RBU finally got back to me today, and said that that Saturday (and pretty much Saturdays in general) was a no-go. I've got a few more places I'm waiting to hear back from, but we may end up looking at weekday alternatives (I have a good space for, say, a Friday tournament lined up). I know this isn't convenient for people, though, so that's my last-ditch backup option.

What about you guys? If I could get this thing to happen on, say, the 1st rather than the second, would you guys still be up for it? Again, I've got a few more responses I'm waiting on (including one I have a slightly higher-up connection with, should get me more leverage), but just exploring the options. What do you guys think?

I'm actually a Scripps Ranch-native, as is ICYDP. RBNuke's over in Mira Mesa.

Scripps got hit hard by the Cedar fires in 2003; my house was part of that. We had good insurance, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been, but this time around RB got hit hard; some people weren't so lucky. There are people who need help, and I'm happy to have the opportunity to help. The people @ RB United are actually pretty excited about the idea of our support (even though it wouldn't be that much money, in the grand scale of things), so I'm trying to use their support as leverage to get a good location. I'll keep you all updated.

Marceux sent me a PM involving a potential venue (at UCSD), and it sounds like a pretty sweet idea, so I'm just waiting on his reply. Will keep you all informed as the situation develops (Marceux, check your e-mail, man!)

Chances are San Marcos/JatS (J Flo, Pnoy, myself or any mixture of the 3) will be down to play, especially for a good cause such as this.

We're waiting on a response to a request for facilities, but it looks like this thing's goin' down on the second over @ UCSD. More details to follow, though it sounds like it's going to have to end at around 5:30 (we have to be completely out by 6).

Oats and I have been chatting via e-mail, and it's sounding like he's got a great location on the UCSD campus in mind, but it'd be a much larger tournament than we had planned. We'll be doing that one later, potentially in October, but for the 8/2 date we might have to cancel. I've just got one last-minute contact to see if we can pull something smaller-scale off on two weeks notice :p. Wish me luck!

Yeah, sorry... Oats and I have been chatting privately. The thread kinda died for a while there, and I didn't want to resurrect it for what would have been the statement of obvious fact -- this thing ain't happening as scheduled. Obviously tomorrow (woah... today. I need to get to sleep) isn't happening (thus the lack of detail), but it's looking like we've got a huge space on the campus for a larger-scale event... in October. Seeing as how this is really my first tournament, I'm seeking out experienced members of the community to help run it. The potential for doing good for the NPO is a lot higher at a larger scale tournament, but there are obviously a whole lot more things that could go wrong... and nobody wants another Dave & Busters.

We are looking at ways to really maximize the positive effect (money raised) this tournament can have, and one of the ideas was an attempt at sponsored prizes, so that the pools would go to the NPO and the top three in each event would take home some pretty sweet prizes. This also gets around some concerns about the usage agreement (I still don't have a lot of the details, I'm waiting to hear back from Oats on them) for the facility, and it would really boost the benefit aspect of the charity event. I'm going to quickly update the OP to reflect the news (something I should have done a while ago). Meanwhile, opinions/suggestions?
