Heya,

Id like to know what you guys think of this matchup. In whose favour is it and what tactics should be used to defeat G&W?

I played a pretty good G&W today (im intermediate, not really good, third day playing online but a lot of melee experience).
He had a very good aerial game, with a lot of dairs en fairs.

Usually my samusgame also contains a lot of aerials (and missiles) so it was a tough beating.

The scene was on corneria, so maybe FD is in samus' favour. Either way, G&Ws KOcapacity and aerial game seemed way higher and better. Your thoughts?

G&W is very very very difficult to beat as alot of characters. i think its a bad matchup. if he catches 3 full power chargeshots thats a free KO for him pretty much. he can KO faster than Samus, gimp her recovery better, and can approach better. even the missles aren't much cause they are easily avoidable. FD is better to fight on cause its flat but as for anything samus can do to hold up idk what she has. :/

Game and Watch is one of those four or five characters I predict being top tier. He's just so good against so many different characters, including Samus.

The only advice I can give you is be the better player. Skill > Tier.
Minimize your mistakes, keep your distance, and don't back down.

minimize? lol more like you got 1 scapegoat and thats it. you need a heck of alot more skill to outbeat G&W with like all but 5 characters. Samus unfortunately not one of those 5. :(

I really don't see that he's that difficult of a match-up.

I'd rather face him than Falco, Pikachu, Marth, MK, Pit or Lucas.

He's a great character but he lacks projectiles, which means that he's more susceptible to bombs and missiles by nature. Since his best attacks are aerials that also makes him more susceptible to Zair and Up+B.

His moves have less lag which goes a long way but in the end he doesn't seem to have any natural advantages over Samus.

A good Samus vs. a good G&W if you haven't already seen it (Tudor vs, Orion).

Well i think that G&W has the advantage. He surely is strong and highly unpredictable. His areal attacks are strong and can get a free KO with either a 9 on hammer or sucking up the power blasts.

My advice to face him will be to tr to use a bit of range attacks against him and avoid being caught off the ledge.

G&W does have the advantage. he has one of the best approachs in the game with a spaced Bair its impossible to shield grab him and i think it goes through zair and it can outreach it. how good is missle camping G&W? can't he duck, dodge and roll around them? and the chargeshot is a rare thing to use cause of the bucket. not to mention he can KO Samus just a bit faster than she can KO him. not to mention he gimps her recovery while she can't really gimp his.

I can honestly say i have never lost to a game and watch in a tournament. I really don't see what's so hard about the matchup. (fought at least one in every tournament i've been to, usually more though)

one of my friends play's G&W so the experience might be why i don't see it as a bad matchup. i dunno, i just don't have any trouble with game and watches usually.

You need to be very fast out of shield and know how to deal with his moves. His ground game is just a touch slow so take advantage of that when you can.

I'm saying G&W as a character has no natural advantage over Samus. Unless G&W is up close he has no options but to approach, and when he's up close he's got bombs to deal with.

And I for one am not afraid of that bucket in a one-on-one. Sure, he could catch the CS. There's also a good chance that he won't, depends on how well he reads my attacks, which has more to do with skill than anything else.

Same thing with missiles. He could dodge every single one, maybe he won't. But, he still has to deal with the missiles, while Samus doesn't have to deal with anything until he gets in close.

I don't know how well G&W can gimp Samus' recovery, but I know that Samus can gimp his because I've done that myself.

All that said, I don't see that he has any advantages that make this a very difficult match-up. I mean, compare him to someone like Falco, who has a projectile that can shut down Samus's projectile game, who's got chain throws, who's got a reflector to deal with all of her projectiles. Same thing with Pit, who has a projectile that can stop her projectile game, who's got two reflectors to deal with all of her projectiles, who's got stupid recovery options, who's got a good melee game.

Compared to advantages like that, I don't see G&W as that hard of a match up.

but doesn't his UpB have invincible frames in it? at base sure theres no real advantage, but that can be said for (insert character X name) vs (insert character Y name) and character X still gives character Y a run for their money to just keep up. oh well you don't see it as that bad of a matchup so i guess its more based on skill gap than i thought but what do they say about it on the G&W board?

They probably like the match up, though I can't say for sure. Lots of people still think that Samus sucks, so I doubt that they would say Samus has any advantage over him.

I don't believe Samus has any real advantages either though. Whoever has more skill takes the win IMO.

well i did some testing on the AI, i know not a good test subject but i didn't have a human G&W to work with at the time of testing. and it seems that the match is mostly neutral since samus dtilt does kill G&W at around 100-115% so thats not bad. smart missle camping can keep him at bay, her Ftilt reach's far enought to poke at G&W so he can't shield grab her, the jab again is nice to push him away, her weight does effectively keep her on the stage for a while recovery isn't too easily gimped either. i could go on but thats just an AI and that cannot be compared to a human opponent. so i guess the matchup isn't so bad as longa as the samus player is on their toes the entire time.

A friend of mine plays a really good G&W. From my experience fighting him, Samus is at a disadvantage. G&W is fairly small(which I find to be a weakness of Samus), his attacks have some pretty good power behind them, and him attacks are fairly quick. Not to mention, you have to be extremly careful about using your charge shot.
As said above, your Zair and screw attack will be very effective for racking up damage and keeping him away. Since G&W is fairly light, when you see the opportunity, get him with a Dtilt.
