The Super Smash Brothers series is all about the characters. The modes, items, stages, and options all come second to the characters. It seems like as long as Brawl has a roster of Nintendo characters the game will be successful. Generating this list shouldn’t be a problem because Sakurai has at his disposal over 20 years of rich Nintendo history to draw his inspiration from.

I find it interesting how few moves were invented for some characters in Melee. Kirby, Mario and Mr. Game&Watch all have move sets almost entierly inspired by ther previoius games. It’s almost as if Sakarai and his team didn’t have to do any creative work at all. Almost.

After reading another update about final smashes, I had to say something about the particular direction Sakruai is taking Brawl. Mario and Link’s final smash are made up, meaning the concept and or animations cannot be found in any previous game. I have to wonder if Sakurai simply decided to make up the moves because of a design issue or a personal one. Mario has plenty of other super moves he could have used from his many RPG adventures. I’m sure there’s quite a few people who would flock back to Mario if he had one of his super moves from Mario RPG.

Link has quite a few super moves from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Remember Quake, Ether, or BombBomb (see very end of each video)? These seem to be perfect for the job, yet, now, Link shoots a triforce out of his hand. Though I’m not a zelda expert (I have only beaten Zelda 1, OOT, MM, WW, TP, 4swords, and Minish cap) I’ve never seen the triforce used in this way. If it has, please correct me.

I can only believe that Sakurai is focing his own style into the game. Perhaps with so much of the games content controled by the daunting Nintendo history, he felt the need to include something of his own. I guess making up Fox, Falco, Captain Falcon’s moves up entirely in Melee wasn’t enough. Not only is Sakurai’s style less Nintendo and more anime-like, but so far his creativity is pretty generic. Mario shoots fire like energy blasts out of his hands in a very DragonBallZ like fashion. The worst part is, these moves are still really cool.

Thinking back on the changes that were made to Melee from Smash 64, I’m starting to understand Sakurai’s development style. After a certain point in the games development, I believe Sakurai adds content just because he thinks it would be cool. Being able to tech off of walls and ceilings in Melee is one thing, but giving about half of the characters wall jumps is a strange decision. Clearly he didn’t think that being able to wall jump balanced the game because all the characters don’t have it including many low tiers. It seems like he just thought it would be cool and gave the characters the ability to wall jump that would look cool while doing it.

It’s obvious that Sakurai wanted people to randomly explode from spawned items in Melee. It must have occurred during play testing, and he kept it in the game anyway. In the Nintendo DS game Meteos, also made by Sakurai, items are designed the same way. They randomly fall down, and can often screw up your hard work without warning. He must be laughing at us somewhere in Japan.

We know he has a sense of humor just by allowing Fox to be as fast and deadly as he is. Fox is clearly too fast and too good nearly ignoring balancing altogether. It’s my belief that when it came down to an issue of balancing Fox, Sakurai decided against it because Fox is “cool” this way. Someone was probably laughing hysterically when they invented Peach’s downsmash too.

It may be a little rash to blame Sakurai for all of these issues. Clearly, the whole team is responsible, that is, unless Sakurai has a son working on the game that included such things because he felt like it and nobody was brave enough to challenge him. But that’s just a whimsical imagining.

They attempted to balance the game for the PAL release. I wonder what their attitude is for Brawl. It takes a lot of design to make the highest tier awesome, and the lowest tier terrible. Maybe we’ll see more characters in the middle this time. Who knows how Sakurai’s style will show up next.

It’s anybody’s guess.

Because they haven’t perfected Yoshi’s model yet? Maybe he just wants to mess with people.

Before I say anything, you’re right KirbyKid, there wasn’t a move such as that ever existed in the past Zelda games

and I think Kirbykid is right about Sakurai putting these things because it would look cool, but I think there’s more to it. I think he’s also doing it because he personally played these games and wanted to manipulate it to his own usage to the smash games and to also give us an excitment and unexpected feel to it. Like c’mon

Who expected Jiggly’s Rest move would be a near instant kill?

Who expected Mr. Game & Watch, Ness, and Fire Elmblem (sp?) to make a appearance?

AND, who expected the whiny ***** Peach, who thought to be useless (since she’s been kidnapped more times then she’s been played), actually kicked so much ass, she’s now High tier?

No one

Because he’s manipulating the characters to his own and our benifit while still keeping them in character. and he’s doing a fantastic job ^^

And it goes even farther. Sakurai must have favorites. Kirby was top tier in the original because Sakurai/Hal liked Kirby.

Now he’s at the very bottom. I remember reading somewhere that they didn’t want to show favoritism with Kirby in Melee.

Something’s going on behind the scene.

Sakurai, just what are you up to?

Dragonball Z is better than any other ******** little show Im sure you’ve ever watched. You obviously dont know how to enjoy life if you have never watched the series from the beginning. I will destroy you if I ever see you online with SSBB, you low-life punk.

There should be at least 2 final smashes for each character.
With all the ideas flying around, Sakurai is likely to find a few more on his own.

I think they made him lower because they didn’t wanna show any kind of favorism. I mean, that’ll be unfair, you know? I guess they decided to give more physics to the form of each character.

Personally, I don’t think there’s any excuse for making a character that’s as bad as Kirby.

Most of the enjoyment of Smash is possible because of it’s structure. The structure is built around the fact that you’re fighting other characters trying to knock them out and off the stage. For this reason, and because winning is fun, it’s more enjoyable to play the high tiers than the low tiers. Because Kirby is so weak, it’s hard for him to win in any given situation.

Noob, casual, and pro smashers aside, is it really fair to purposefully make a character this bad? It takes a lot of work to gimp a character as much as Kirby. It would have been all to easy to allow Kirby to cancel his terrible dash attack, add some priority to his lame neutral air attack, or fix the holes in his up B move.

In the same fashion, it would have been just as easy to weaken fox. They could have slowed him down, not allowed him to jump cancel his shine/reflector, or weaken his up smash.

But they didn’t do any of these things. Is it really fair to have such a disparaging gap between the characters. Wouldn’t it be better to bring all the characters closer in power?

Ultimately, if Kirby were middle tier wouldn’t that be avoiding favoritism?

I didnt think kirby was that bad. Except for his dashing attack he was pretty good. Im sure they could perk him up a little though. I agree KirbyKid on the fact that each character should be about the same. Sure some could be a little heavier and stronger. Others could be faster. But this way it would all come down to the fact to whos the better player. That way you dont have one extremely strong character that just crushes.

On another note go to youtube and type in Super mario Bros Z. Cool and funny series.

The youtube thing is just for Mario, Sonic, and DBZ fans. I dont like DBZ but this is pretty cool. The only reason I bring this up is for the tiny arguement about DBZ.

Half of Mario’s super moves in Mario RPG involved shooting fireballs anyway. The rest were all jump attacks that I don’t think would translate well to the nature of a final smash…

I’m sure a man of Sakurai’s talents could find a way.
But who knows.

True that btw.

Kirby’s effectiveness adjusts with the opponent’s B smash move. For example, it is generally better to inhale Donkey Kong than Zelda. What if, somehow, you can choose which move yo mimic, or maybe not.

whats so wrong with Kirby? iv kicked my cousins but 100 times with Kirby! sure, his up B move is kind of anoying, but hes fast, he can duck under any thing (even most of the cars on the f-zero adventure, i tried) and he can float above anything! also, as most of us know, he can steal moves and put on cute little outfits. i mean, whats wrong with you people?

Whether The final smashes are genaric or not is all acording too taste, and whats more is that just what in the heck is wrong with having things for sake of being cool I always wanted to blow things to pieces with mario and now i will finally get my chance. every one knows this but if there was no strongest or weakest in any catagory it just would not be fun. Imagine every thing being the exact same all fare and balanced. BORING

Mario’s final smash does have a source. In Mario Kart: Double Dash, his special item was a fireball, which he threw. The fireball split and bounced around, either to the front or back of the car, and covered more than half the track, horizontally.
