It's obvious that Sakurai knows that not everyone wants to find out about the new characters via The Dojo, but instead, discover them for themselves, as indicated by the strategically sized 'WARNING! CHALLENGER APPROACHING!' sign.

My question is, will this cause Sakurai to neglect showing these new characters in other screenshots?

This could mean a severe lack of gameplay screens of our favourite (new) characters.

Discuss.

i think ike will be one of the starters the reason he put up warning blablabla is because we didnt know he was gonna be in this game.

I think that warning was there simply because that was what showed up in Melee when you were about to fight against a new character you unlocked.

But the sign was made just large enough to bump the actual update off of the screen and out of sight to anyone who would like to take heed to the warning and NOT scroll down.

it wasnt big enough for me and i stand by me theory.
Same here... when I open the page I can see the upper half of Ike's body.

And I also agree that Ike will likely be a starter character. I doubt they'll release any info about hidden characters this soon.

well for most of us I'm sure, the update was bumped off screen. It may change if you have a different resolution or a bigger screen, but I'm sure tat it was intended to hide the update.

I'm not talking about the text on the warning, but the size.
Sakurai could have put a big black box there to fill the space.
However, it seems that would only work with those of us that have decent monitors.

I would imagine that if they wanted to hide a spoiler, they'd do a better job. Who's going to see that message and say "OMG! I can't scroll down!!" Obviously, people go there to find information about the game before it's release, so technically everything on there is a spoiler. But like I said, they'd likely do a better job to hide it, like stating that it's a major spoiler, and showing a link if you wanted to see it.

If they didn't TELL you it was a character you'd scroll down and accidentally find out, something you wouldn't want if you were avoiding big spoilers

It worked on me, I sat at my computer for 5 minutes debating whether or not I should look.

They went as far as to specify what sort of update it was, so the viewer could personally decide if it was in their best interest to scroll.

Personally, I hesitated for a bit before eventually giving in.

EDIT: hi-5, Eaode

To be honest, the first thing I saw was the name "Ike". Then the image with the warning loaded for me.

So the image did jack, and it will do jack to people with low internet connection.

My monitor is awesome and it's running at 1024, an average res.

I could see most of ike. Shenanigans, Sakurai is not trying to hide spoilers. Not to mention every new item, stage, and assist trophy is technically a spoiler.

I think Sakurai is trying to make us know characters like Ike are unlockables.

People don't read.
I said he's trying to warn those of us who dont want to see the characters on dojo, about CHARACTER updates.
This is smart of him.

Theres nobody out there saying 'oh darn I dont want to see the items/levels on the site, I want to encounter them in the game'

Oh noes! Finding out what characters you start with is a spoiler!!!
The image didn't help me at all, partially because it was too small, but mainly because I use a RSS bookmark and can see the last 10 updates to the site from my Firefox bookmarks bar.
PS: WOOO!!! MORE FIRE EMBLEM CHARACTERS!!! Now it just needs Sigurd...

You're right, the "warning" still does jack if people really think it was a spoiler warning.

By the way, I too have the RSS feed, in my Firefox bookmarks.

Well of course he wasn't "hiding" the spoiler or he wouldn't have put it up there. I think he was giving people the option to decide what they want to know about the game and what they don't. Maybe he wasn't expecting people to be running such high resolutions on their computer, but I'm certain that this was intended to prevent anyone from initially discovering something inadvertently.

Of course it blocked it out for me but I don't care I was waiting for this type of update so I just looked without hesitation :p

If that "warning" really was a spoiler warning, the image would have been made higher. It's still no use for some people if the spoiler doesn't get concealed properly.

I don't think Sakurai cares about spoilers. but I personally think Ike will be unlockable due to the banner. He's yet to use that for any character. Even though all the other characters were in trailers first, he still didn't use it. Look at DK, he had no alert or anything.

I think you're right. This gives hope to revealing Sonic before the game comes out, heh.

I wouldn't have looked, though, if I had known it was a Character spoiler. But my stupid Wii scrolls to the middle first, so I have to scroll up to the update, thus I had to see the character before I could see the big "Warning!" box. Didn't even know there was a big warning sign until I saw this thread, actually.

The smash site is for updates and information about super smash brothers: brawl.

If you're going to the site, expect information. I think it's fairly ridiculous to think that sakurai is trying to keep everything secret-ish. Think about it--you cant even go to the character screen on the site without seeing it there, unless you're truly dedicated. Also, what magazine, website, or what have you is going to be keeping these characters a secret? Not to mention, you come to smashboards, where the character will surely be a major topic of conversation.

What I'm saying is, to be spoiler conscious, you simply have to avoid all brawl info.

Personally, I think the Challenger Banner was simply there to show that it's an as-yet unrevealed character.

Personally, I figured there would be a FE starter this time around, much like Falcon & Ness went from secret chars in SSB to starters in Melee. To me it was just a cool little thing Sakurai did to hype up Ike a bit more.

It's all about marketing.

He probably won't do something THAT big. 3rd party's gotta stay secret until the end. Otherwise it's not surprising.
I think Sakurai-sensei is going for a shock reactiong. The FE debate has been going on since the game was announced. I mean, it was Hector vs. Lyn vs. Ephriam vs. Marth vs. Roy vs. Ike for over a year. He did this to increse speculation. Well, that's what I could glean.

If anyone remembers way back before SSBM came out, did they reveal any secret characters months before the game came out?

And also, it would be odd to reveal secret characters, game modes, stages, etc. this early. Ike is just a newcomer to the Smash, not a secret character, so that's why it said what my sig says. :p

With that said, Sonic won't be revealed 'til AFTER Brawl releases. :chuckle:

Something I noticed is the banner's URL says something along the lines of Ike-Image e. Could this mean that Ike will be the only character he does this for?

My reasoning for why he did this is because, you know him, he's always trying to throw curveballs at us to keep us guessing. For example, I don't think anyone on this board would have predicted that today would be an Ike update.

look, if people did not want to see spoilers o nthe site, they should not go on the site at all. Cuasei ts already showing new items and giving info about stages ect, tey will eventually go to characters.

I think it's most obvious that he's just revealing stuff that going to be available from the start. Although, updates like "This World..." make us wonder/ponder on what it is.

OK umm didn't in the first trailer, Fire Emblem stage was being shown in action, TWICE!? Well, if I remember, that was from Path of Radiance, in which Ike was the main character. sooooo.....I'm assuming since that was the first trailer and all, that stage isn't secret, so neither is the character. Ever since I saw that stage, I don't knoow about you guys, but I knew Ike was gonna be a character in the game. You don't really think they would have the stage be a normal level, but the corresponding character secret, do you?

You are wrong for one simple reason:

The Japanese version of the image says アイク参戦 (where the BIG "アイク" is "Ike" in Japanese). It translates as "Ike joins the battle"; the "Warning" stuff is only present in the other languages.

I think he should tell us about new characters only if they will be already unlocked when you first turn on the game.

ATTACK WEAK POINTS FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE!!!

Oh, and something to wonder about (and to back up lampiaio):

About that, Japanese were screwed over for us. They were immediately spoilered.

You see, I put this on Babelfish, and apparently

アイク参戦!!

translates to

アイク participation! !

Now I took a look at Ike's Wikipage, and came across something horrible:

Ike (アイク, Aiku) is the son of Commander Greil of the Greil Mercenaries.
...

Ike (アイク, Aiku)
...

アイク
...

アイク participation! !
...

アイク
Wait, am I missing something here?
