Someone should put one or two additional words in the title of this thread, I guess :b:

@ W Wheelie : Not many developers work that hard and push their own envelope both physically and psychical to deliver a game. Sakurai must be burned down by now, considering how hard he worked (birth)day & night to bring a game he originally didn't even agree to direct. If you look at the final product, you should be content that it comes in such a high quality with so much effort put in it! Especially in times of rushed game release that don't live up to their own hype. I would also love DLC content, but that's a bonus, as always! Yes, Sakurai will get a lot of (our) cash for this, but hell, did he earn it! Insulting him for not getting a bonus he never owed anyone is just beyond dignity and shortsighted as well.

What I'd rather like to see is Sakurai going on a big, fat vacation, not thinking about this stuff anymore for some time.

I wrote this on another thread so I'll just copy and paste it here:

Keep in mind that:

not having plans for DLC ≠ not having future DLC

Now if Nintendo and Sakurai plan for future DLC (which is very likely still since Sakurai does admit that having DLC in Smash is highly profitable but somewhat controversial), they will most likely distribute the DLC like they are doing with Mewtwo (as promotions for an event or a new game, which will be redistributed later as paid DLC). This could work highly on their favor because Nintendo's DLC, compared to other companies' DLC, are not exactly rip-offs (so far) and thus adds up to their good reputation.

Maybe after future DLC is released, Nintendo could go on the route of other companies and re-release Smash 4 with all the DLC they planned on adding for even more extra income.

Well because of Sakurai this website exists and we have something to talk/type about. Be a little more grateful.
And I called him Masahiro for what I thought was a mistake.

The week before release would not be the best time to get hopes up about DLC. Like he said, some people (unjustly since this game has so much content) would feel cheated. Smash already has a huge hype wave going, but in 6 months or a year, a new announcement of some new content would give the game some legs. We didn't know about DLC/Amiibo support for MK8 when it was released and now more interest is being drummed up even after it's been on store shelves for half a year.

At least we know that SOMETHING else is coming down the road, but I would be surprised if Mewtwo was the only thing they had in store.

I call BS on this because Mario Kart got DLC and even new Super Mario Bros. They have to know that there is good money to be made if they do a few more additional characters. It's a win/win for everyone. I think the OP was being a bit over dramatic because Sakurai never said there would be no DLC at all.

My only thing is I think there will just be a few characters not a bunch stages etc. Like every one else has been predicting.

If no characters except Mewtwo are in the works for DLC, it will take quite a while until we see DLC. Characters take a year to make, and I can't imagine how long it takes to make stages. Really there's only a point to adding DLC to Smash if its characters who appeared before Smash came out, or maybe a bit after it comes out, such as Inkling from Splatoon.

I really only see there being one more. Probably another veteran too.
This is because it will make the Wii U CSS a perfect rectangle:

:4mario::4luigi::4peach::4bowser::4yoshi::rosalina::4bowserjr::4wario::4dk::4diddy::4gaw::4littlemac::4duckhunt:
:4link::4zelda::4sheik::4ganondorf::4tlink::4samus::4zss::4pit::4palutena::4marth::4myfriends::4robinm::popo:
:4kirby::4dedede::4metaknight::4fox::4falco::4pikachu::4charizard::4lucario::4jigglypuff::4greninja::mewtwopm::4rob::4ness:
:4falcon::4villager::4olimar::4wiifit::4shulk::4drmario::4darkpit::4lucina::4pacman::4megaman::4sonic::4mii::substitute:
If we're only getting veterans then I'd say :wolf: and:popo:(if technical issues are fixed) and:lucas:. Why don't the interviewers ask about these characters:wolf::lucas:? Hopefully we'll get more DLC announcements after the Japanese release.

So judging from this we shouldn't expect any character DLC in 2015 except Mewtwo. That's not a very good move.

Perhaps they'll announce smash 4 DLC at E3 2015. After all, smash comes out once per console.

Well, here's the thing. Mewtwo will take a while, and according to the website:

http://www.smashbros.com/jp/soundtrack/
http://club2.nintendo.com/smash-promo/

Registration must be done by the end of March. Mewtwo would probably be in April.

If tons of people by both games, future DLC might be determined by April. However, I'm sure they've probably got a few partially-finished characters right now they won't talk about just yet.

Also, this is at the bottom of the English page:
Mewtwo DLC may be available for purchase in the future.

Yeah, Mewtwo will be available later as paid DLC.

Keep in mind, it said may
I know. Why even bring it up in the first place? They're GOING to do it, they just want as many people to buy both versions as possible, so they're not going to say it out right. They also hid it way at the bottom of the page.

He didn't say there will be no DLC, just no DLC planned that not the same as no DLC.

He did mention no PAID DLC. That does not mean no DLC at all. In the interview, he seems very concerned with the critics of paid DLC, namely those who claim game companies put out incomplete products and thus get more money out of players by offering what should have been in the game from the start as extra, paid content. The MIIverse stage will be free, as far as I understand it, and Mewtwo is being billed as a special bonus, not paid DLC.

Does this mean that future DLC will be free? It seems unlikely. But its possible that Sakurai personally would rather offer new characters and stages for free rather than making gamers pay more. His statements also seem a bit PR sensitive--Sakurai doesn't want to claim some characters were nearly done or in development but pushed back so Nintendo could ask players to pay more for them.

All that said, I believe Sakurai when he says the team is not working on more characters right this moment. But I don't think this interview precludes the possibility of them doing so in the future.

Well they are working on Mewtwo atm, it's not surprising that no other DLC is planned atm.

When he is done I'm sure we are getting more, other popular Nintendo games are getting it, off the top of my head (ones I've played) Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Awakening...so Nintendo will go for it, I don't think Sakurai can just tell them "no" if he doesn't want DLC, Nintendo will want him to do it so he will have to.

He mentioned no PAID DLC "at this time." That doesn't even mean "no more characters other than Mewtwo" at this time. He could be working on other similar bonuses to Mewtwo (although I doubt it).

I'm sure Sakurai could say "no." He probably wouldn't, but even then, they'd just get someone else to do it. Nintendo planned Brawl (at least) without consulting Sakurai first and asked Sakurai to come back to direct after the fact. Regardless of whether Sakurai wants to and will do it, if Nintendo wants it, its going to happen.

He said nothing is planned. He did NOT say that they were planning NOT to havr it. Plus, Mewtwo. It feels like hes just saying that to make people not feel rjpped off or to not get expectations too high during the wait.

Its not like sakurai has never backed away from what hes said b4.

Breaking News: Game Developer decides to not have plans to create significant amounts of content during the games development period but selling it after release to generate more profit.

This reporter suggests it's because Sakurai isn't EA/Activision scum.

You do realize that he never said their wouldn't be DLC?

Also, if you want Mewtwo, you WILL have to pay extra. You'll have to buy both versions of the game.

Adding DLC does not mean you're not getting the full game. The only time that happens is if content is removed to make DLC, which obviously isn't the case.
I'm not paying extra at all. I'm paying exactly what I would have paid regardless if Mewtwo was DLC or not. I've had a lot of fun with smash 3DS and now my body is ready for the Wii U version.

I think all this means that if they decide want to make more DLC's they will have to determine if the profits will be worth it.

Meaning that if they do decide to make more characters, it makes more sense to make several and not just one or two.

And include popular characters who would sell better.

I don't think there will be DLC, and if there is it would be for awhile, like late 2015 awhile. A lot of people can't handle having MEWTWO be the only one, but "no current plans" usually means no.

Except he said the exact same thing about a month ago. Then Mewtwo.

Yeah, if Nintendo is going to have DLC in Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Hyrule Warriors, New Super Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3, etc. (or is that it?) then I see no reason why they would not put it in what is surely going to be the Wii U's best seller. Nintendo is a business and the best business sense is to have extra paid for DLC for your number one selling game. It's a win-win, because consumers get more content and Nintendo gets more money.

Also, I imagine the spring update that brings in the Miiverse stage and allows for Mewtwo to join (if you have both games, which I do), will be a pretty big update and we'll probably get more than what we've learned about so far. Not another new playable character kind of big, but just big for an update (i.e. not just some small tweaks).

None at the time != None ever. But I'll enjoy what's in the game, whether or not there's more to come.

As for Mewtwo, obviously he wasn't on the radar at the time (or was intended as launch-ready), and then either he was added late (after the No-planned-DLC announcement), or got held up and rather than delay the game (like everyone got upset over for Brawl), they chose to delay Mewtwo and instead turned him into a bonus.

Personally, I think Sakurai isn't buying quite honest with us.

The game was made with DLC in mind.
The arrows were found for the CSS and SSS in Smah 3DS' code.
And just from seeing Smash Wii U's SSS, we can see an empty area in between the tabs at the bottom of the screen for Normal and Custom stages (it will most likely be a tab for the DLC stages).

Not to mention the Gematsu leak.
Under the assumption that the leak was outdated information, we can tell DLC was being considered almost from the very beginning. Gematsu said Lucas may be cut, but DLC may bring him back.
