I really doubt Sakurai had Dark Pit as a separate character solely because the Final Smash wasn't relevant to the character in the context of their series. Now where have I seen that before...

FCOL you could've just left Dark Pit as a reskin.

Sakurai had Dark Pit as a separate character because he made Uprising and is proud of that. Plain and simple. Not really anything wrong with it, but he did go extremely biased when making this game in terms of Kid Icarus and Kirby.
